could have gotten a first round pick though.. or just waive some of the other players or trade some of their bench guys for 2nd round draft picks.

could have gotten a first round pick though..

But they want to dump salary, and as I said above only two teams had enough cap space, Clippers and Grizzlies, and the Grizz are not interested in taking on new contracts, so that made the Clippers the only potential suitor, which means they can name their own price. Camby maybe worth a late first rounder, but if they wanted to deal with another team, they would have to take on an equivalent amount of salary (which is opposite to dumping salary).

or just waive some of the other players

Contracts are guaranteed in the NBA, they would still have to pay them, and then get other players to replace them, which would mean they would be paying even more in the cap (opposite to dumping salary).

or trade some of their bench guys for 2nd round draft picks.

Maybe an option, but they still need to take on equivalent salary, unless they are dealing with a team under the cap. Dumping low cost players doesnt take too much off the cap, and those players still need to be replaced with other paid players which adds to the cap.

Part of this is to get the team under the luxury tax cap. Teams are very keen to do this...in the season past all teams under the luxury cap got $3 million. If you were even just one dollar over, you didnt get a cent back, plus you paid the amount again that you were over the luxury cap to the NBA (to pay for that $3 million). J.R. Smith is a RFA, so he still needs to be resigned and added to the cost number. I suppose you could renounce the rights to JR Smith, and that would take a few million off the cap number too.

Am I reading this right, Clippers gave up a 2nd Round Pick for Camby???

They could have at least got say Thornton or someone, Camby has more value than that, surely!!

Playing with a True PG will really open up the Defense, and possibly allow Camby some inside scoring opportunities.

i could be wrong, but im sure i saw that the trade involved camby to clips and denver in return gets $10M and the 2nd rd pick down the track??? not sure if it is correct, cant remember where i saw it :-k

also the posey signing is huge for the hornets... very nice pickup indeed, yes they had to make a fair commitment to him but at least they have a defensive minded bench guy who can also score... their bench depth last yr was what let them down in my opinion... hopefully they can swing some trades and solidify the bench even more... solid player and a proven winner

From - [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3491156"]Nuggets trade Camby to Clippers for second-round pick - NBA - ESPN[/ame]

The Clippers on Tuesday night swung a trade to import Denver Nuggets center Marcus Camby as their Brand replacement for the minuscule cost of giving Denver the option to swap second-round picks in 2010, capitalizing on the Nuggets' need to shed salary to create their own financial flexibility.

It is an option to swap second round picks in 2010, so if the Clippers 2nd round pick in 2010 is higher than the Nuggets, the Nuggs have the option to swap positions in the draft.

The $10 million that you are thinking of is this, also from ESPN....

Using the salary-cap space earmarked for re-signing Brand before his free-agent departure to the Philadelphia 76ers, L.A. was able to absorb Camby's contract ($10 million for each of the next two seasons) without surrendering anything of consequence, although Denver did create a trade exception worth $10.1 million that expires one year from Tuesday.

Denver have a trade exception worth $10 million that they can use within a year, as they traded away a player with a higher salary than they received in return. So they can now acquire more salary in a trade than they give away, up to $10 million. Although it is probably unlikely they will use it until around draft time next year, as they are obviously dumping salary, and by using it, they would be adding salary again.

Also remember, that it does not matter what the GM's and coaches at Denver want to do, if the owner/s orders them to dump salary, to ave on luxury tax, there is nothing they can do about it.

Thanks for the explanations.

Whilst it sounds totally crazy, if they have to cut costs, they have to cut costs...

Cuban would have even took on Camby's contract to have him start in the middle!!!

I like the Posey deal. It's cool to see him get a big contract, he's a valuable piece to any team, he's been sort of a lucky charm for a couple of teams. Go Hornets!

There have been some rumblings over the last few weeks that a big trade is going to happen in Motown. It's been kept fairly quiet but here is some news starting to leak that it could happen soon.

This news comes out of Oakland for Warriors and Pistons fans. Billups might be traded in exchange for Biedrins although the Warriors are saying they won't trade Biedrins.

Report: Pistons willing to deal Billups for Warriors' Andris Biedrins

The Pistons are interested in acquiring Golden State center Andris Biedrins and they would offer Chauncey Billups in the deal, the Oakland Tribune reported.

Columnist Carl Steward writes: "The buzz in Detroit is that the Warriors and Pistons have been talking about a deal involving point guard Chauncey Billups. The Pistons want Andris Biedrins, the Warriors are offering up Al Harrington. Harrington by all means. But Biedrins? No way.

"Hard to see Billups in a running style, though, and he will be 32 in September. That said, he would be much preferable to (Monta) Ellis at the point, and a significant recoup, at least temporarily, for the loss of (Baron) Davis.

Biedrins and Ellis are restricted free agents, and the Warriors had hoped to re-sign them. But the Warriors have appeared reluctant to include Biedrins in a sign-and-trade.

The 6-11 Biedrins was the No. 11 overall pick in 2004. The 22-year-old started 59 of 76 games last season, averaging 10.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.24 blocks, shooting 62.6 percent from the floor.

The Warriors might be willing to make a trade once their deal for Ronny Turiaf has been completed. Golden State made a four-year, $17 million offer to the restricted free agent Turiaf of the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers have until Thursday to match the offer or they will lose Turiaf, a 6-foot-10 forward who averaged 6.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game last season.

ahh i see... thanks for the explanation. Bad situation denver got in.

billups for beidrens? another crazy deal

Yeah agreed. No way would I give up Biedrins for Billups. Billups is old and they just gave him a ridiculously big, long contract that he'll never be worth IMO. Biedrins only 22, full of potential and a solid big man.

But the Warriors are in desperate need of a PG. Probably won't be a lot of opportunities for a decent one. If they sign Turiaf, that gives them another big man option. Randolph and Wright are both going to be studs too.

Unless I'm horribly mistaken, Randolph and Wright arn't able to play Center, and neither are Harrington or Turiaf. Who else does that leave you? Billups is old and massively inflated contract, not to mention I don't think he's an uptempo PG the way Baron is. Unless your style of play is going to change, I just do not think Chauncey would gel at all and simply is not worth giving up you're only Center who has a mountain of potential.

I agree Ben. Warriors GM has already said he will keep Ellis and Biedrins at any price.
The Warriors arent going anywhere this year but have a good core of younger players like Ellis, Biedrins, Brandan Wright, Anthony Randolph and Belinelli.
I'd be very surprised if Golden State picked up Billups. He doesnt seem to match the Warriors' up tempo style.
Clearly they need a Point Guard though. I suspect Javaris Crittenton or Kyle Lowry are more realistic options ina trade, maybe involving Al Harrington.

I just want to know if the Warriors will have any players left at the start of the season,
with all their FA's running. It seems everyone wants a player from them..........you think the Warriors will match this offer sheet Loc?

From ESPN

The Los Angeles Clippers have identified the latest target in their recovery from the free-agent loss of Elton Brand by agreeing to terms on an offer sheet with restricted free agent Kelenna Azubuike of the Golden State Warriors.

NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com that the Clippers have extended a multi-year offer using their estimated $3 million in salary-cap space left over after completing a trade Tuesday with the Denver Nuggets to acquire center Marcus Camby as their primary Brand replacement.

The Warriors will have seven days to match the offer when the deal is completed, but the Clippers would appear to have a good chance of emerging from that wait with Azubuike. Although the England-born swingman was beginning to blossom under coach Don Nelson in Oakland, Golden State has Monta Ellis, Corey Maggette and Stephen Jackson ahead of Azubuike in Nelson's rotation as well as 2007 first-round pick Marco Belinelli.

Azubuike is still developing after just two seasons in the league but has shown flashes of the ability to score from the wing that the Clippers need after Maggette signed a five-year deal worth an estimated $50 million with Golden State last week. Going to Los Angeles would reunite Azubuike with new Clippers guard Baron Davis after they spent the bulk of the past two seasons together with the Warriors.

Golden State, meanwhile, will learn Friday whether it can finally add Los Angeles Lakers restricted free agent Ronny Turiaf to its roster. The Lakers are widely expected not to match the Warriors' four-year, $17 million offer sheet to the energetic power forward with promising center Andrew Bynum scheduled to rejoin the team in training camp and partner with Pau Gasol on L.A.'s front line.

Warriors style doesn't really rely on bigs or set positions. If they have some height they can play center...lol. Al Harrington has played 5 many times. Turiaf is a legitimate 4/5 and can easily hold his own at 5. I'm not saying I agree with the proposed trade, but I think not having a good point guard affects the progress of all the young guys. Monta, Jack and Al have experience/skills to get their own.......but a lot of the younger guys will need some assistance to find their game.

I would hate to see Kelena go....big fan of his since his days as a Wildcat. With Barnes and Pietrus gone that would hurt.

Like I've said before, the Warriors aren't going past the first round as long as they play small ball anyways. Hopefully they can trade Jack or Al for a decent PG and keep the young core together

LOCKY - love your thinking there. I'd LOVE to see either of those 2 in a Warriors uni. great young guys to build for the future

The Kelenna Azubuike potential signing for the clippers would be huge! hes a quality player who was unfortunately buried in GSW rotation behind monta, jax, belinneli and now maggette.

This would give the clips a great starting lineup of Camby, Kaman, Thornton, Mobley & B Diddy as well as one really solid bench... Azubuike, Tim Thomas, Eric Gordon, Brevin Knight... will just need to acquire a bit more size or more likely trade for it...

Players are running from GSW this offseason!!! Davis, Barnes, Pietrus and now Azubuike... and it still looks like things arent done yet with the biedrins for chauncey rumors... interesting season coming up for GSW

Where's Matt Barnes....??

The Warriors have a stack of mid"-fielders", and since they were all picked up around the same time-frame, they're bound to see a lot of people coming and going.

They need to keep hold of Biedrins tho, he's a gun in the low block. Rather like AK47, but has a lot of room to improve. If he can continue to play well, he and Monta will be the backbone of GSW.

It's hard to see Golden State make that trade for Billups. Either way Detroit would win out because Biedrens has a really bright future. Still, pairing Billups and Monta would be something to see.

I like the Clippers offer to Azubuike. He's going to be a great addition to the bench and will get playing time. I don't see the Warriors matching his offer.
