Official Patty Mills Thread

Re: Paddy Mills Season Progress Thread

*Updated first post.

St Marys have survived reasonably well without Patty. After losing 4 of 5 games when he first got injured they have now won 5 straight, including a win against number 23 ranked team Utah State.

Doctors have now cleared Patty Mills to play in the WCC tournament which starts this weekend. Hopefully there isn't a lot of rust and the St Marys team puts on a good enough show to also qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

I guess the positive of his injury is that he has now had a month of only doing ballwork with his left hand which should improve his overall game.

Re: Paddy Mills Season Progress Thread

Do you think he'll put his name up for this years draft?

If the Gaels do good in the WCC tourney and get into the NCAA tournament I suppose he probably will. He's a sophomore this year though so it wouldn't kill his stock to stay at St Mary's for another full year where he can show what he was before he went down.

That being said this years draft class is pretty weak so it may be better if he comes out, most mock drafts have him going in the early 20's right now, mainly due to his injury. Prior to it he was a lottery pick in some mock drafts usually going in between 14-18.

Next year's draft class is much stronger and there looks to be some pretty solid guards in there with the likes of Ricky Rubio and John Wall. A few high school seniors who have yet to commit to colleges are already ranked in the top 10 for next year's draft, showing there is some more junior talent to go with the others who choose to come out.

It's a toss up..

funny you say that, only reason i asked was because every mock draft i've looked at, i can't spot his name! :woot:

These guy's mocks are usually quite accurate!

Haha well that's weird mate, the two ones I usually use are NBADraft.net and DraftExpress.com - the latter one is generally regarded as one of the best, most detailed mock draft sites around, definately top 3.

NBADraft.net has Mills going #17 in the 2009 draft
It also has AJ Ogilvy holding out for this year and going #24 next year, although obviously that doesn't mean anything as it's a year away and in an NCAA season prospects can go from 35th to 1st.

Ironically enough DraftExpress has both players holding out for the 2010 draft
It says Ogilvy will go #9 and Mills #24

I generally pay more attention to NBADraft.net though as their mocks are always nearly perfect when compared with the actual draft board.

SMC had three First Team All-WCC selections in 2009.
San Bruno, CA — The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team garnered three First Team All-West Coast Conference selections, and Diamon Simpson was named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year on Monday. Saint Mary’s was the only team conference to have three first team selections, as Simpson, Patrick Mills and Omar Samhan were All-WCC honorees.

En route to his third straight First Team All-WCC selection, Simpson averaged a double-double with 13.6 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, to finish second in the WCC in rebounds per game and 11th in the conference in scoring. His 10.7 rebounds currently ranks 11th in the nation. Simpson currently ranks as SMC’s all-time leader in rebounds (1,062) and ranks third all-time in scoring with 1,513 points.

Simpson was also named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year, for the second straight year. En route to his selection as the conference’s top defensive player, he finished second on the team in blocks (51) and steals (46), while his 10.7 rebounds per game led the Gaels and was second in the WCC. Simpson finished the season with 14 double-doubles, in point and rebounds, bringing his career total to 34, while grabbing 10 or more rebounds 18 times as a senior.

Omar Samhan had a standout junior campaign, as he finished second on the team in scoring and rebounds. His 13.7 points per game ranked 10th in the WCC, while his 9.2 rebounds per game was third in the conference. Samhan ended the 2008-09 regular season with 10 points and 10 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season and 20th of his career. He scored in double figures in 23 of 29 games, while scoring 20 or more points four times, and reached the 10-rebound mark 13 times this season.

Patrick Mills garnered his second straight First Team All-WCC selection despite missing the last nine games of the season with a broken hand. Prior to his injury, Mills led the Gaels with 18.7 points per game, 77 assists, and 47 steals, which is still tops in the WCC. In six games during WCC play, Mills was averaging 17.3 points, 4.6 assists and 2.4 steals per contest. His best game of the season came against Santa Clara to open conference play, as he scored 31 points and hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 2.4 seconds left on the clock. Mills scored in double figures in all 20 games this season and topped the 20-point mark eight times.

Santa Clara center John Bryant was named the WCC Player of the Year after averaging 18.0 points and a nation’s best 13.9 rebounds per game. The Newcomer of the Year award was split between Portland junior guard T.J. Campbell and Santa Clara freshman guard Kevin Foster. The WCC Coach of the Year went to Portland’s third-year coach Eric Reveno, who guided the Pilots to an 18-11 overall record and a third place WCC finish with a 9-5 mark.

I just read this...

Saint Mary's beats Portland in Mills' return
By GREG BEACHAM – 4 hours ago

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Patty Mills scored 12 points in his rough return from a five-week absence with a broken hand, but Saint Mary's rallied around its star guard for a 71-61 victory over Portland on Sunday night.

The Gaels advanced to meet Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference tournament final.

Diamon Simpson had 15 points and 14 rebounds, and Omar Samhan added 12 points and 13 rebounds for the second-seeded Gaels (25-5), who realize their NCAA tournament hopes could come down to Monday's meeting with the top-seeded Zags, who routed Santa Clara in the other semifinal.

Mills, the Gaels' Australian sophomore point guard, hadn't played since breaking two bones in his hand Jan. 29. The rust was obvious in his 3-for-12 shooting and three turnovers, but his playmaking noticeably picked up in a turnover-free second half as Saint Mary's got rolling in the final minutes of its sixth consecutive victory.

Both clubs shot poorly in a tentative first half that ended 24-24, and neither team led by more than five points in a back-and-forth second half until Saint Mary's made an 11-2 run. The string included seven points from Carlin Hughes, Mills' fellow Aussie, who put the Gaels up 62-51 with a 3-pointer followed by a layup with 2:04 left.

Simpson added a breakaway dunk with 1:31 left to seal it. Wayne Hunter scored 13 points for the Gaels, and Hughes had 12.

Nik Raivio had 15 points and nine rebounds, and T.J. Campbell added 12 points for the Pilots (19-11), who routed Pepperdine on Saturday night to reach the semifinals. The young Pilots stayed with Saint Mary's throughout, but haven't won two games in the conference tournament since 1996.

The Gaels were 18-1 with a 15-game winning streak when Mills, their leading scorer and playmaker, was injured during a game at Gonzaga. Saint Mary's lost that game and three of its next four, including an 18-point loss at Portland.

After snapping the skid with a home win over the Pilots on Feb. 14, Saint Mary's ran the table in its remaining conference games to keep alive its hopes of the first back-to-back NCAA tournament berths in school history.

Mills underwent surgery on his hand, but always hoped to get back for the chance to earn an automatic NCAA berth. The Australian Olympian made the all-league first team despite playing in just six WCC games.

He returned to practice with Saint Mary's on Monday, and the school dramatically announced his return Friday after scheduling an additional game against Eastern Washington next week to further prove Mills' fitness to the NCAA selection committee.

Mills started a bit tentatively when he entered the game as a substitute early in the first half. He finished the first half with 2-of-7 shooting, three turnovers, an airballed free throw and two offensive fouls.

But Mills also demonstrated his quickness midway through the first half when he split two defenders with a dribble, sliced into the lane and got called for a questionable charge.

Portland snapped a string of 10 consecutive non-winning seasons this year with coach Eric Reveno's eclectic roster featuring players from Germany, Japan and Canada complementing Raivio, the WCC's fourth-leading scorer. Saint Mary's barely slipped past the Pilots for the No. 3 seed with its late-season win streak.

Simpson became the Gaels' career leader in steals during the game, adding to his school records in rebounds and blocks.

Can't wait to watch this tonight, it was a good game last night. Hopefully Mills will slip back into form today

Re: Paddy Mills Season Progress Thread

Shame, St Mary's got blown out by Gonzaga, who I didn't know are the #12 team rankwise in the nation, pretty decent squad by the looks of the game on ESPN.

Mills had a rough game went like 3/18 or something like that, just couldn't get started. That Simpson/Sampson guy on the Gaels team is pretty good though.

hey everyone i was wondering what pick everyone thought patrick mills would go in his draft year? he as played some great ball this season so i thought i might ask what everyone thought
Shane

he wont go anywhere imo not this year anyways

i think he will be a top 20 in next years draft its just this year he had that month of injured which has really hurt hes chances(unless he has a big march madness)

Some people should be interested in this.

If you know anything bout college hoops Stephen Curry is one of the most heralded players in the nation right now, despite Davidson not making it to March Madness he was close to leading the league in scoring and is the son of Dell Curry. He's a prolific scorer and likely lottery or top 20 NBA Draft pick.

This game featured Davidson vs St. Mary's in a battle of point guards with Curry taking on Patty Mills who is also one of the best in the country.

Final statline: St Mary's defeat Davidson to advance to NIT Quarterfinals 80-68

Stephen Curry: 26 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 6 to's, 11/27 FG, 4/10 3PTM

Patrick Mills: 23 points, 0 rebounds, 10 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 to, 9/22 FG, 1/10 3PTM

MORAGA, Calif. -- Patty Mills had 23 points and 10 assists while outdueling Stephen Curry in a matchup of two elite guards, leading Saint Mary's into the NIT quarterfinals with an 80-68 victory over Davidson on Monday night.

Curry had 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists in what might have been the national scoring leader's final game for the Wildcats (27-8), but Mills overcame his awful 3-point shooting with effective passing and just enough of his usual daredevil drives to the hoop, preventing Davidson from rallying late.

Omar Samhan added 18 points and nine rebounds for the Gaels (28-6), who will play Wednesday night at San Diego State, with the winner getting a trip to Madison Square Garden next week for the NIT semifinals.

Great game from Mills to get his first double double. Looks like he needs to improve his range though!

Curry is a great college player, can't wait to see him in the NBA.
