Common base:
In all honesty these are not the best looking common card design I've ever seen but that factor is certainly excusable - in the era of inserts, nobody could really care less what they look like
(IMO series 1 commons this year we're a better design not to mention the 1994 commons the best ones ever)

Holographic parallel cards:
As long as there's a parallel set in series ii nowadays and that their a numbered concept, could anyone care what they look like much less than the base set? Wouldn't say so, as long as they're fancier than the base set also
IMO the 2013 parallel cards were the best from select in spite they weren't numbered, yet a series 1 concept

All Australian 22:
This concept in series ii is here to stay and like the commons, nobody cares what they look like - in fact fancier design will never prevent a complete set plummeting to $22 all up

Timeless:
Certainly like this concept and an exceptional design for a lower end numbered concept. Like the way these replacing HOF low end alongside team leaders and goal to goals

Rookie cards:
Knew these would be back with no surprises. An excellent starting point for players PC's and glad they've continued

Draft Pick signature cards:
Glad to see these back in the collection piece and these remind me of a US basketball style design: definitely the equal best design along with last year's and the platinum DPS ones of 2008

Players ink signatures:
This is evidently a revised version of the certified concept and not a bad one at all: love Phil Davis has become a signee as a GWS collector
Do love the blue ink for a change but wouldn't mind seeing black ink come back sooner or later

Medal winners:
Appreciate this concept has been moved to a case hit concept rather than one in every box

High flyers:
Love the way there's a concept in this release for all 18 clubs numbered the same as a case hit card. Believe these will look better on hand and hope next year's release will have a decent replacement with something similar yet different: a design resembling the cazaily 94 commons would be awesome as a high end hit

Dominance black /60:
Excellent design and the good news for drama5 on here is he'll never see one of those dodgy signatures on one of these cards - must agree an IP would look horrid on one of these. Only con IMO whit is small is that Gaga is not vin the Canberra ACT livery - IMO Giants high ends look better with players in this Guernsey

Captain signature cards:
Sensational! Glad the top ends are back accumulated for all clubs and glad select has made Guernsey cards every few years to make such concept unique
Also love the way they've kept the design from the naughties.
Only con IMO is next year when it's my team's turn for this concept, Davis won't be accounted for?

Collingwood triple signature:
Yes! I knew it!!! A Collingwood Shaw card! Love the way Ray's kids have the logos on the panels like Gazza had last year. At the of the day, I'm not going to take food off the table to snap up one of these and can happily except I will never be an owner of one of these cards.
Only other con is these signatures should have been signed in silver ink on black panels (presume they're not)

Overall verdict 8.5/10
No release is perfect but unlike legacy, IMO select have next to nailed this one

PS as for premiership predictors, glad they are back however perhaps wouldn't mind a consolation redeemable for the eventual incorrect predictors as well as the correct one: perhaps a concept depicting a key achievement for your club during such season? Nonetheless the design of the cards in itself is a nice one - even if set in stone your team has no chance

Purchased 3 packs so wasn't execting to get much.

Just like AFL stars the card quality is very good, very glossy finish and nice and dense.

Base card design was very bland. To be honest I really think they need to have a 1990's full bleed design with foil stamping (like Fleer, Fleer Ultra, Flair, some Upper Deck or Topps Stadium Club from the 90's). As an Adelaide fan of course I don't get a single Adelaide player, that was to be expected.

Got a couple of inserts and beat the odds with 3 packs. They looked substantially better but wasm't expecting anything rare but sometimes it happens.

Timeless 1:9 would have been a better base card design as we know how crazy Select are with white themed base cards. Got a really great player too Shaun Burgoyne 035/350.

Rookie card 1:12 wasn't too bad with a neat border of the team colours and gold highlights similar to last year's design. Ely Smith 037/250.

Having had a couple of weeks to digest this series I think there are some great elements but heaps of room for improvement.

No problems at all with the commons, parallels, AA cards, Rookies. Good low end inserts. Like the concept and design of the Timeless cards and the set looks great in an album.

I think the High Flyers are some of the best looking inserts Select has done. I like the gold numbering on the back and the images used, particularly Howe, Hawkins, Heeney and Curnow. I can imagine these cards will look awesome alongside the Footy's Finest cards with the contrast of black and white backgrounds.

Players Ink are a step up from certified signatures and DPS look good although I preferred the Legacy design.

Now for the negatives -

I know captain sigs are popular but I'm a bit underwhelmed given most of the players involved. If you look back at previous captain sig series you will see plenty of all time great players. Judd, J Brown, Pavlich, Riewoldt, S Mitchell etc.
The only players anywhere near that caliber who are current day captains are Selwood, Pendlebury, Fyfe. Probably Cotchin, Hurn, maybe J Kennedy a rung down from that. Despite their rarity I don't see signature cards of the likes of Geary, Zorko, Ziebell, Walker (this year), Wines, Swallow, Viney etc (next year) as being something sought after for years to come.

Dominance insert is just ok IMO, looks pretty plain for a 1:12 box insert and some of the players chosen are weird (Sandilands has barely played in 18 months). Comparing this insert to the Legacy FHOF, I much prefer the FHOF and they were an easier pull at 1:4 boxes.

I am sick of the medal cards, I know they need to be included but I feel Select needs to freshen this idea up. If the cards can't be numbered surely there's something they can do for us to chase, say perhaps 50 of each medal winner has redeemable signature cards alongside the standard design.

Also not a fan of the premiership predictor concept as it stands. If they really want to release PPs of all 18 clubs they should be in series 1 when every team is a chance. For example Melbourne opened the season as 2nd faves for the flag but pulling a Melbourne PP in July is worthless. I've seen a couple of case breaks where of the 12 PPs pulled, NONE are of the realistic chances (Cats, WCE, Pies, GWS). Would be pretty disheartening to pay $2.5k+ for a case and not even end up with a PP that can be redeemed.

I much preferred the 1:12 box PP that could be redeemed regardless of who wins the flag.

I am super disappointed that there are 4 boxes per case that only have a sig and a PP as the hits. These are a premium product, not cheap and I think Select need to do more. I will never have the $$ to buy a case on release but bought 3 boxes on release day and got 1 medal card and two boxes of nothing. Even though it was in line with the odds it was still disheartening. The template here should be Certified 2017 (my fave series) where 1:2 boxes had a medal card and 1:2 boxes had a big hit like a guernsey or guernsey auto, FF, PP or Influential.

Finally I think the Shaw triple sig is a real let down after they set the bar so high with the Ablett Next Gen. None of these players will be remembered as greats of the game and I notice that the price on these are bombing badly (most selling on eBay for $700-750 after being $1k on release). Surely the Silvagnis or Fletchers would have been a far better option and also appealed to big club collectors.

Overall I give the series 6.5 out of 10. I hope they add another high end chase card to next year's Dominance series, like how they added the Influential cards to the 2017 Certified series when they weren't in the 2016 version.

Perhaps for 2020 dominance, wouldn't mind seeing an unsigned captain concept of all 18 clubs: based on the design of the LL cards in an NRL release back in 2012:

Captain unsigned Gold /60:
Replacing high flyers

Captain unsigned Black /30:
Like the way influential concept was added to the certified release in 2017 unlike 2016

Positives are

Timeless inserts
High Flyers
Players ink

Negatives are

Draft pick signature...should have kept design like Legacy
Dominance...ordinary card for a 1:4 Box hit
Prices people are dumping high end inserts for

I think this could be the best year for the premiership predictors. every team in the top 8 has lost at least 2 of there last 5 games with the exception of Brisbane who have only lost 1, teams down to 14th are still a chance to make the 8 and the way the year has gone i think anyone can win on any given day.

With premiership predictors my view is pretty simple

Best in series 1, and if so one per team is plenty...not a fan of this gold and silver concept

If in series 2, then best go with one premiership predictor per case. So one overall not one per team

That would be a premiership redemption not predictor

The Dominance cards are 1 per case, not 1 per 4 boxes. And personally i think they are the highlight of this series. In hand the finish is magnificent. Timeless are a very nice simple and clean design. But High Flyers don't do much for me. The player stands out pretty well but the High Flyers and players name text on the sides could be bigger, and maybe a slightly different finish on the background would improve them. Draft Pick sigs are ugly, way too over done. But my 2 biggest disappointment from this release are 1) Every box should have either a medal card or bigger hit, like in 2017 Certified, and 2) Extremely disappointing Select couldn't be bothered doing multiple captain signature cards. Picking just one captain when the club has 2 is lazy and defeats the purpose of captain signature cards.

Do you think what hurts the captains signature this time around also is that 1/2 have signed either a Guernsey or a 1 per box certificated Signature in the last 2/3 years?

I wouldn't think it would effect it too much. Only captains this year to get a patch card are Cotchin and Walker, and the Walker could have been a Sloane dual sig. Next year if captains stayed the same it will be Wines and Pendlebury to double up. I think it's now more a case of people are really concentrating on collecting just their own teams cards, so you find a lot being dumped so these sellers can either buy more product or just buy the cards they chase. The Facebook page is great, but problem with it seems to be if you get a team you don't want in a break, then everything you hit gets dumped quickly, it floods eBay and buy/sell/trade pages on Facebook and forums. Lets face it, how many non Collingwood people would keep a Shaw triple sig if they pulled one? Probably not too many i wouldn't think. So much product getting busted in a short period of time and then dumped making sellers lower their prices or risk getting stuck with it. And the sooner you sell the more you get back, so it's a race to sell quickly. Have a look at how many captain sig redemptions are listed on eBay right now, i get 31 in total. That's a lot to choose from, and that's just eBay. If you pull one and want to sell then you need to be sharp with the price or it just doesn't sell.

Very true in what you say with everything, even more so the triple signature.

Couldn’t agree more, I sell a lot on eBay but have found all these breaks are actually hurting the value, as you said most breaks are random so very rarely do you get your team and if you don’t the cards get dumped to get your money back to go in more breaks, this year especially I have found the prices to bottom out way quicker than usual, if I bought a case tomorrow and tried to sell every card would lose money, don’t get me wrong live breaks are great fun to be in but we are starting to see the other side of what they are doing as well

I also think that a lot of people are just generally being smarter with their money these days.

None of this stuff really holds its value anymore, there isn't really huge amounts of innovation in this release and most of the stuff isn't that limited.

People are simply waiting for people to dump their excess cards before buying up their teams cards off eBay or from people dumping quickly to recoup their outlay.

Plain to see, who keeps the cards for themselves on a break and not their team?

I scored a Gary Ablett Future Hall of Fame card in a box last year. My plan was to trade or sell to get the Betts FHOF card but decided to keep it as Gary Ablett will probably go down as one of the best players of all time.
