don't think i have seen a thread about this yet....would of thought it may have been a topic of conversation for a few members??

for those that don't know what has happened, basically to cut a long story short, it appears that an overseas horse have brought into the country a highly contagious influenza (Equine Influenza or EI) that has literally stopped horse racing in this country dead in it's tracks. (had to throw that pun in there ;)) Even the trots and all equestrian events have been cancelled Australia wide. And any movement of horses and horse floats anywhere has become an offence until they decide it is OK to proceed. It could be serious enough to cancel/postpone the Melbourne Cup

This weekends infamous Birdsville races has unfortunately been cancelled, and they are still not sure if racing will be up and going again this weekend.

Last years winner and runner-up of the Cup, Delta Blues and Pop Rock have already confirmed that they will not be making the trip to Australia for the spring carnival and Melbourne Cup!!

This flu has and is costing the economy hundreds of millions of dollars!!

a very serious issue indeed!!

theres a few threads already on this topic under betting views/news ect.

also it wasn't started by overseas horses at all.

Racing is back this saturday in melbourne and adelaide and most likely the following weeks in syd and bris.

Delta Blues and Pop Rock are not makin the trip due to the Japanese EI as they cant make the quarantine time...(had nothing to do with Australias current problem)

Spring Carnival will go ahead as planned...

If ya wanna know anything else about it just ask.. cheers

Man those tabcorp bastards knew about this a month ago!, they had their special weekend where you could back delta blues and pop rock for five times what you normally would be able to. They knew it i tells ya just to drag some money outta my back pocket!

The outbreak started in sydney mate ...and jumped from property to property, there is a state line restriction on ALL states but it is very difficult to contain.

darwin has not been affected as such and may be able to resume racing saturday.

A time frame is tough as it only takes 1 or 2 people/horses to break rank and it can get out of control again as Humans can catch this in an instant but it has no affect on us but we CAN pass it on to the horses...so strappers/farriers/jockeys/track riders ect can carry it to multiple venues.

There was an outbreak of EI in south africa and it stopped the racing industry for 13 weeks (just over 3 months) ...as for individual horses first thought was 3-5 days but for the horses that are recoverring trainers are being told not to even start Jogging/cantering them back into work for at least 2 weeks to be safe.
hope this helps mate...

lastest bad news is that there are now 8 horses in Vic being tested for the EI if they are found positive racing may not resume sat in Melb...lets hope it comes back negative.

Interesting stuff; hopefully the horses turn out to be negative for the flu, and racing can start again on saturday.

Yikes....not good news!!

THE worst fears of the racing industry appear to have been realised with the news of the first racehorse to test positive to equine influenza (EI).

Confirmatory tests are still underway but it is almost certain a horse from trainer Anthony Cummings' stable at Randwick in Sydney has the highly contagious disease.

Randwick Racecourse has been locked down and all horses confined to their boxes.

"We have taken a second test but the first one showed all the signs of being positive," Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'Landys said this morning.

"The previous tests have been accurate so we are holding little hope.

"The test on the second sample will be expedited and we should know for certain later this morning.

"It is such bad news."

Until now, the virus has only been detected in recreational and pleasure horses in NSW and Queensland, but a standstill on all horse movements in Australia is in place until Friday.

Racing is expected to resume in all other states this weekend.

Officials had been hopeful racing could resume in a limited form in the next couple of weeks.

The first case of EI in Australia was confirmed in a stallion at the Eastern Creek quarantine station west of Sydney a week ago.

Horses at an equestrian centre at Centennial Park in Sydney's eastern suburbs were also found to be infected but a link between the two has not yet been established.

Several horses from Centennial Park travelled to Maitland, in the Hunter Valley, for a show on the weekend of August 18 and 19 before the virus was apparent and spread the infection to other horses which have since travelled to various parts of NSW and Queensland.

The stallions at Eastern Creek had come from the northern hemisphere and were due to begin serving mares this weekend.

An investigation is underway into how EI breached Australian biosecurity barriers.

We just had our first racehorse test positive here in NSW. It was at randwick, right near Centenial park where it first appeared. I believe we are going to have an in house meeting, where stabled horses at the track will race. No punters allowed at the track though, just betting through the TAB.
Sure the Melbourne races will be going this weekend, but the fields just wont be the same quality when NSW horses can't participate. And the races at Randwick and the likes won't be very flash either.... I can't wait till we are back to normal, this really does suck!

Thanks for the best laugh I've had all year (and its august):lol::lol::lol: what good horses do you have in sydney???????????????? Fuimicino? lol. Sydney has the weakest horses going around in the last 30 years.....they'd only come over here and get flogged like they do every year.

it's official....the Sydney Spring Carnival has been called off. 8 out of 10 horses tested today from the Randwick stables have come back positive.
A 30 day quarintine will follow and basically end the Spring carnival in Sydney :(

Thats fine :) other than Camarilla there aren't any horses that would have made any impression down here anyway.

Thats fine :)

No its not fine, you could usually get a better price on the Melbourne Horses (and that includes David Hayes runners) cause all the NSW punters would back the NSW Horses.

Now with no NSW horses they will be putting their money on the Vic horses

No because the NSW horses are usually backed on the NSW tab :)

Correct and because I live in NSW and punt on the NSW Tab, the prices for the Melbourne horses are always better or should that be the NSW horses are always under value

:D:D:D

What a lot of you haven't mentioned and probably did not know is that E.I started at a riding school in NSW. It had nothing to do with the Racing community.

Who gives a crap about the TAB and so on. It's the animals that have to suffer through stupidity.

This is fact.

People have still been moving horses around here in the Goulburn Valley in Victoria and I doubt everyone will be stopped from moving any kind of Equine around.

What the underlining problem of the situation is, people with beloved pets in need of other help from Vets, won't be able to take their horses to some of their states best facilities (Victoria, Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital, Werribee Equine Hospital etc.). People are currently camping at Werribee as they cannot move their recovering equine back home.

Animals are ment to be vaccinated against all diseases and this could of been avoided should people actually take the time of day, spend the cash, and vaccinate properly and test their animals on a regular basis. If in doubt, don't move your animal around until you are 100% happy with their health.

What makes it worse is that humans can spread it also, so maybe people should be put on hold also.

Just my 5 cents worth as I hear about it everyday and discuss it everyday (and i work with horse people everyday).
