The next Immortal- You Nomination and Why

One thing that should be said, nobody here knows Johns personally or the problems he has faced and what his life has really been like so people should stop passing judgement on him. He was made an Immortal based purely on his abilities on the field and that is something that should be celebrated.

At the end of the day...you are 100% correct. I'll remember him as a footy player.

Fair enough, whatever my opinion or personal beliefs, those in the know sought to honor him.

I don't think any player that has been retired 15 years or less should be eligible for immortal status. Norm Provan was my pick even though I knew he was long odds against Joey and Smellmifinger.

Meninga: Conveniently forgets the 1978-1985 seasons he played at South Brisbane, where he won two more comps in 1981 and 1985, and runners up 79, 80, 82 & 84, so SIX more GF appearances. [[ For mine, the old NSWRL and BRL / QRL records should be compiled and merged, as of the 1980's when Meninga, Belcher, etc and then the Broncos of 1988 came in, the QRL comp was the equal of NSWRL ]].

He played 460 games for club, state and country.
He played:
Approx 216 for South Brisbane (this is to be completely confirmed).
166 Canberra Raiders NSWRL
32 QLD
46 Aust

Norm Provan
FG Games 256
Internationals 14
Premierships 12

If Football back in the day had as many international games as they do today, then Im sure Norm would have played alot more Internationals. He also played 19 games for NSW

I've read the book 'Never Before, Never Again' about St George and the 11 Premierships, 2 Immortals and their mate a half back/centre wreaked havoc in the Dragons territory while on the grog, if what Johns was using had been available to those 3 in their day they would have been the same as Joey, Johns should have been busted by the cops because evidently every man & his dog in Newcastle knew that Johns was on something illegal, but the criteria for an immortal didn't take into account what they did off the field.

Maybe the judging panel should have been mate up of you blokes.

You obviously all know more about the game than the esteemed panel that picked him.

Johns made everyone better around him. The mark of a true champion.
A few Knights players owe their origin careers to him.

On his playing career alone, I doubt Meninga would get in and lucky he is coaching a QLD team that wouldnt need a coach to win.

Maddog MacDougall, Matt Johns, Paul Harrogan, Robbie O'Davis, Lee Jackson in 1997 with M Gidley, Albert, Buderus, Craigie coming through and seasoned Glanville, Muir and Butterfield in 1997.

O'Davis, M Gidley, Tahu, A MacDougall, Buderus, Simpson, Kennedy in 2001.

I think he had alright sides. [[ When I wrote this, I meant decent, well rounded sides. Canberra certainly had a number of 'stars' ]]

I will say this, A Johns did lift the players around him.

I always find it funny when comments like this get thrown around.

But then again, everyone's an expert.

are meningas premierships with souths that big of an achievement? there were only 3 really consistent sides in that comp and there is no way the brl comp compared to the arl/nrl comps when the knights won. just an opinion
