Shout out to @SharpysSports for the latest addition!

Michael Kent Benson grew up in New Castle, Indiana and was named Indiana Mr. Basketball in 1973. He elected to attend local Indiana University, playing for famous college coach Bobby Knight. In his freshman year, the 6'11" center helped the Hoosiers win the Big Ten title. As a sophomore, Benson and the Hoosiers went unbeaten until they lost to Kentucky in the Elite Eight by two points. Benson's contribution was a mammoth 33 points and 23 rebounds.

In his junior year, alongside seniors Quinn Buckner & Scott May, Benson and the Hoosiers went unbeaten and won the National Championship. He was awarded the Helms Foundation Player of the Year and also the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player. He also made first team All American. The following season with Buckner and May graduated Benson was named Big Ten Player of the Year and All American again, however the team didn't make the NCAA Championship. Throughout his college career he averaged 15.3 points, 9 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.

In 1977, Benson was selected with the #1 pick overall in the Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. Taken ahead of future All-Stars Otis Birdsong, Marques Johnson & Walter Davis and also future Hall of Famers Bernard King & Jack Sikma.

Benson was two minutes into his NBA career when he elbowed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the abdomen who retaliated by punching and subsequently concussing Benson. Kareem broke his hand and would be out for two months. Benson had an underwhelming rookie season, averaging 7.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 18 minutes however improved to 12.3 points, 7.1 rebounds & 2.5 assists as a sophomore.

Benson was then traded to Detroit midway through his third season with a first round pick for Bob Lanier. He spent over 6 seasons with Detroit and after putting up good numbers initially he fell down the pecking order as the Pistons developed into championship contenders. They then traded him to Utah with Kelly Tripucka for Adrian Dantley and two future second round picks. It was the 2nd time in his career he was traded, both by teams looking to "get over the hump" and contend for the title.

He spent one year coming off the bench in Utah. The Jazz then traded him to Cleveland with Dell Curry for Darryl Dawkins and Melvin Turpin. He would only play twice for Cleveland before heading to Italy. After spending one season in Italy he opted not to see out his contract despite the opportunity to play for another five years and elected to retire instead.

He has since been involved in life insurance, estate planning, car auctions and The College Network.

He was inducted into the Indiana University Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.

As an NBA player he averaged 9.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 23 minutes across 680 regular season games.

*This is why I love looking into these players. I had NFI he was a former #1 pick!*

This is what collecting is all about!!! This post made me smile and reminds me of the good old collecting days!

I pulled this card from a box of Certified and just thought it was cool. The camo effect, the glasses and the stylish autograph are all just something different.

I tried selling it numerous times without any luck and then when the Secret Santa selections were made, it was clear that this card was in my collection for this very reason!

MCAP Auto #71 - Lindsey Hunter
1997-98 SP Authentic - Sign of the Times
IMG_9419.jpeg

Lindsey Hunter was born in Jackson, Mississippi and attended nearby Alcorn State University. After his freshman year, he transferred to his hometown university Jackson State, becoming one of their most notable athletes, after NFL stars Walter Peyton & Jackie Slater. In his three years at Jackson State he averaged 24.2 points per game.

The 6'2" point guard was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the 10th pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He featured in all 82 games his rookie season, mostly off the bench backing up Isiah Thomas, averaging 10.3 points, 4.8 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 26 minutes per game and making the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in the process.

Hunter then regressed the following two seasons, albeit his sophomore season being disrupted by injury, before putting up a career high 14.2 points per game in his first season as the regular starter in 1996-97. The Pistons won 54 games but this was only good enough for third in the Central Division and they crashed out in the first round. Hunter remained a constant contributor over the next three seasons, but the Pistons couldn't get out of the first round and before the start of the 2000-01 season they traded Hunter to the Milwaukee Bucks for aging veteran Billy Owens.

He spent one season with the Bucks, playing in all 82 games coming off the bench and providing them with 10.1 points in 24 minutes. At the end of the season, Milwaukee traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers for Greg Foster which saw him link up with the back-to-back Champion Kobe/Shaq Lakers squad. Hunter played all 82 games that season, starting 47 games. Come playoff time he averaged 7 minutes per game but he was a solid role player as the Lakers made it a three-peat and Lindsey got himself a ring.

Hunter wouldn't be a part of the squad that went for four in a row though, as the Lakers traded him to the Toronto Raptors on draft night when he was packaged with Chris Jefferies and a future 2nd round pick for Tracy Murray, Kareem Rush and a future 2nd round pick (which turned out to be Luke Walton). In his one season north of the border, Lindsey only played 29 games for the Raps. In the off-season he was traded back to the Pistons for Michael Curry.

Hunter had only played 11 games on his return to his original team when he was a part of the three team trade that brought Rasheed Wallace to the Pistons. Hunter found himself in Boston, however the Celtics immediately released him and the Pistons re-signed him the following week. Hunter's tenacious defense off the bench would be credited as the Pistons went on to win their first title since 1989-90. Hunter remained with the Pistons for several seasons as a role player as they attempted to climb the mountain once again but ultimately fell short over the following four seasons.

In his second last season in the Motor City, Hunter was suspended for 10 games when he tested positive for phentermine. Hunter claimed it was as a result of him taking his wife's diet pills. Hunter played in Chicago the last two seasons of his career, playing 41 games before being waived and being made a member of the Bulls staff as a player development assistant.

In 2012-13, Hunter joined Phoenix as an assistant coach. Halfway through the season, he was named interim coach replacing the fired Alvin Gentry. The Suns were 13-28 under Gentry and finished 12-29 under Hunter. In the off-season he joined the Golden State Warriors as an assistant coach with Jeff Hornacek taking over in Phoenix. After one season with the Warriors, Hunter joined the staff at the University of Buffalo.

In 2019, he was named head coach of Mississippi Valley State. In his three year tenure there he had a 7-75 record before being placed on administrative leave for unannounced reasons and ultimately stepping down.

During his NBA career he won two titles, whilst featuring in 937 regular season games, averaging 8.5 points, 2.7 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals.

MCAP Auto #72 - Allan Houston
2014-15 Panini Gala - Silver Screen Signatures 39/49
IMG_9403.jpeg

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Allan Houston was Kentucky Mr. Basketball & McDonald's All-American coming out of high school. He attended the University of Tennessee where he was coached by his father, Wade Houston. During his collegiate career from 1989-1993, Houston averaged over 20 points every season making First Team All-SEC three times and winning the SEC Tournament MVP in 1991. He left the school as its all-time leading scorer and had his jersey retired in 2011.

A 6'6" shooting guard, Houston was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the 11th pick in the 1993 NBA Draft (one pick after previous MCAP inductee Lindsey Hunter). Unlike Hunter, Houston failed to make an All-Rookie team as he registered 8.5 points, 1.5 rebounds & 1.3 assists in19 minutes of the bench his rookie year. Where Hunter's career stalled the next two seasons, Houston's took off. He was still coming off the bench half of the time in his sophomore season, but he averaged 14.5 points per game helped by increasing his shooting from deep from under 30% to 42.4%.

His ascension continued the following season as he made the shooting guard position his own. Playing over 37 minutes a night, Houston averaged 19.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3 assists per game and once again averaged over 42% from beyond the arc. Houston would be the Pistons best player in the playoffs that season, averaging 25 points a night, but they were swept by the Eastern Conference finalists, the Magic in three games.

Out of contract after only three seasons, Houston signed with the New York Knicks on a 7 year, $56m contract. The Pistons front office said they had told Houston they were going to match any offer he got, but Houston didn't give them a chance in the end. There's talk the move was engineered by Houston's agent who had an ongoing feud with Grant Hill and his mother. Houston says he was going to leverage the Knicks to get the money he deserved off the Pistons, until he shared a private jet with Patrick Ewing and by the time it touched down he wanted to sign with the Knicks and help try to get Ewing a championship.

Houston replaced Knicks veteran John Starks in the starting line-up, however it took him a little while to match the numbers he was putting up in the Motor City as the Knicks continued to fall short in the playoffs. In his third season in New York, Houston hit a series winner versus the Heat in Game 5 of the first round of the playoffs as the 8th seeded Knicks defeated the #1 seed (in the lock out shortened season). New York would go on to make the Finals, but succumbed to San Antonio in five games.

It was after his Finals appearance that Houston really started to hit his straps in the Big Apple. He made back-to-back All Star games and won the gold medal with Team USA at the Sydney Olympics. However, the Knicks were still unable to get the ultimate success in the playoffs.

After five seasons, Houston opted out of the last two years of his deal and the Knicks signed him to a 6 year, $100m extension. The deal turned out to be a massive burden for the franchise. Houston had two more good seasons in him, before knee issues ended his career. He managed 50 games in the third year of the deal and just 20 games in the fourth. In 2005 the NBA introduced an amnesty rule, giving a franchise to erase one bad contract for salary cap purposes (the player would still be paid) with Houston's contract being the most famous, it was dubbed the "Allan Houston rule". Houston attempted a couple of comeback in 2007 & 2008 but the initial attempt was delayed and the latter ended with the Knicks cutting him in preseason.

He then moved into the New York front office, rising as high as assistant GM in 2010. Currently he is special assistant to the Knicks' GM and GM of the Westchester Knicks, the franchises G League affiliate.

During his career, Houston averaged 17.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 839 regular season games. He finished with a three point percentage in excess of 40%.

In 2001 Houston was criticised and labelled as anti-Semitic for citing a bible verse in support of teammate Charlie Ward's claim that Jews were stubborn and persecutors of Christians.

MCAP Auto #73 - Luis Montero
2017-18 Donruss Optic - Signature Series Purple
IMG_9444.jpeg

The Dominican Republic's Luis Montero moved to America to follow his dream. He attended high school in Massachusetts at Wilbraham & Monson Academy and then college basketball for Westchester Community College. After one season at Westchester averaging 15.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3 assist he was set to return for his sophomore season but their season was cancelled due to transcript issues. As a result enrolled at South Plains College in January 2015, but ended up nominating for the 2015 NBA Draft and not playing any more at the collegiate level.

Montero went undrafted but played Summer League with the Portland Trailblazers who signed him to a 1 year, $525k deal. He played 12 times for the Blazers (in between D-League assignments), totaling 42 minutes, 14 points (on 26% shooting), 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 4 turnovers.

After one season Portland waived him, however he was signed by the Miami Heat a few days later. They elected to waive him after two pre-season games at which point he headed back to the D-League. The Detroit Pistons then elected to sign the 6'7" shooting guard to a two-way contract for the 2017-18 season. With the Pistons he made two appearances for 8 minutes, 2 rebounds, 2 turnovers and zero points. The Pistons decided to waive him in January 2018.

Luis then headed back to the D-League but was waived after a couple of months of his second stint with the Reno Bighorns. From here Montero signed with El Millõn Yireh who played in the 2nd Division of the Dominican Republic before signing with Polish club Anwil Włocławek who fired him after a few days as Montero refused to undertake a medical. Since then, Montero has played basketball in Mexico for Capitanes de Ciudad de México and Argentinian clubs Club Atlético Platense and San Lorenzo.

Back in October 2018, after his NBA career had fizzled out, Montero was arrested in Miami for having oral sex with a 13 year old girl. The two had exchanged nude photos via Snapchat and agreed to meet. The girl claims she informed the 25 year old Montero she was 15, whilst Montero said she didn't disclose her age but stopped the interaction when the girls school started to call him, looking for her (acting on information from the girl's friends). He pleaded not guilty and released on bail with a trial set for the coming days.

I struggled to find any more information but given his career continued I imagine the trial turned out favourably for him?

He currently plays in Venezuela.

MCAP Auto #75 - DaJuan Summers
2009-10 Panini Playoff Contenders Rookie Ticket
IMG_9465.jpeg

A native of Maryland, Summers attended local private school McDonogh. A five start recruit coming out of high school, he elected to attend Georgetown University where the 6'8" small forward made the 2007 Big East All-Rookie team and was a starter for the Hoyas as they made it all the way to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Ohio State. Going into the game Summers had scored 15 points in the Sweet Sixteen and 20 in the Elite Eight against North Carolina but he shot 1-10 from the field and finished with 3 points against the Buckeyes.

As a sophomore Summers averaged 11.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists as Georgetown earned a #2 seed for the NCAA tournament, however the Hoyas were upset by Davidson led by Steph Curry. As a junior Summers, once again increased his scoring averaging 13.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game however Georgetown missed out on the NCAA tournament and Summers declared for the 2009 NBA Draft.

Selected by the Detroit Pistons with the 35th pick, Summers signed a 2 year deal with the franchise. Across his two seasons, he played 66 games, averaging 3.2 points. After Detroit he signed in Italy, however only played four games before returning to the States to sign with the New Orleans Hornets. He played 15 games for the Hornets, starting six times before being waived in February of the same season, after averaging 4.5 points and 1.5 rebounds.

Before the 2012-13 season, Summers signed with the Charlotte Bobcats, however he was waived before the start of the season. He headed for the D-League, playing for the Maine Red Claws before a couple of 10 day contracts with the Los Angeles Clippers saw him earn a contract for the remainder of the season. However, DaJuan would only represent the Clippers twice before being released at the end of the season.

Summers head back to Europe, signing in Ukraine for a season and despite political unrest forcing his family to return home, Summers saw out the season winning the league & cup. He played Summer League with Brooklyn, before playing the following season in Spain. The Knicks then signed Summers ahead of the 2015-16 season but he was released and then picked up by the Westchester Knicks. He averaged 25.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game with Westchester over three games earning him D-League Player of the Week, but a ruptured Achilles ended his season after only three games.

His NBA dream over, Summers headed to Turkey for two seasons, before playing in South Korea, France, Japan, Puerto Rico, Iran & Saudi Arabia.

In 2022 he was named "Fourth man of the Year" in the BIG3 league and appears to have signed with the New Taipei Kings for the 2022-23 season, but is yet to make an appearance for them.

MCAP Auto #76 - Reggie Bullock
2016-17 Donruss Optic - Signature Series Holo
IMG_9238.jpeg

Reginald Ryedell Bullock was born in Baltimore, Maryland however Reggie played his high school basketball in North Carolina for Kinston High with whom he won two State championships with on his way to becoming Mr. Basketball North Carolina and a McDonald's All American in 2010.

Well before this Bullock had already committed to attending North Carolina after receiving a scholarship offer in 2008. He came off the bench his freshman season, but his season was cut short by a lateral meniscus tear which meant his missed the team's run to the Elite Eight. He would be an important part of the squad who bowed out at the same stage the following year.

North Carolina dropped off his junior year, however Bullock grew to have his best collegiate season, averaging 13.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game whilst shooting 43.6% from deep. On the back of this impressive season, Bullock nominated for the 2013 NBA Draft and the 6'6" Small Forward was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers with the 25th selection.

Bullock had an uneventful rookie season in LA. Joining a team looking for championship success meant Bullock only featured in just over 40 games during the regular season, averaging 9 minutes an appearance. He featured a further 25 times for the Clips in his sophomore season before they traded him to Phoenix in a three team deal involving Austin Rivers, Chris Douglas-Roberts and Shavlik Randolph. However Reggie barely played in Phoenix and was assigned to the Bakersfield Jam in the NBA D-League.

In the off-season Bullock was once again traded, this time to Detroit along with Danny Granger and Marcus Morris for a 2020 2nd round pick. Bullock's luck didn't originally turn in the Motor City. His first two seasons in the D were blighted by injury concerns and he played less than half the season both years, however the Pistons saw enough to retain him with a 2 year, $5m contract. Bullock repaid the faith, playing 62 games, averaging 11.3 points per game (a big bump on his previous best of 4.5) helped by shooting 44.5% from beyond the arc.

Bullock kept up his impressive form the following season, but was moved at the deadline as the Piston's looked to rebuild. He was traded back to LA, this time to the Lakers who were looking to add pieces to help LeBron James. Reggie elected to move on at the end of the season though, signing a 2 year, $8.2m deal with the New York Knicks.

Injury once again greatly impacted Bullock though, hip and back issues saw him limited to only 29 appearances in New York his first season, however he showed what he could do the following year, averaging 10.9 points, shooting 41% from three.

After playing out his 2 year deal, Bullock found new pastures once again, signing a 3 year, $30m deal with the Dallas Maverick where he currently plies his trade today. Since joining the Mavs he has been a regular contributor, despite his deep ball average falling back below 40%. Last season he averaged 10.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals in the Playoffs as the Mavs were eliminated in the Western Conference Finals.

As it stands he has played 495 regular season games, averaging 7.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists whilst shooting 38.4% from deep.

Reggie's career is made all the more impressive when considering the personal tragedies he has unfortunately suffered along the way. In the off-season, following his rookie season in Los Angeles, his transgender sister, Mia Henderson, was stabbed to death in Baltimore with the suspect acquitted. Five years later, Keoisha Moore, Reggie's younger sister was shot to death in Baltimore also. The case remains unsolved.

That’s the thing ... when someone gets killed, it doesn’t play out like on TV. It don’t all get resolved in the last episode. All the court stuff is just really messy, and maybe you never get justice, and you can either let that eat you up inside, or you can find ways to honor the lives you lost. - Reggie Bullock via The Players Tribune

Bullock has used his position to campaign for LGBT rights and has been a part of anti-bullying campaigns. He established RemarkaBULL, which is "a social enterprise providing revitalized spaces, housing and businesses developed based on the needs of the community. The Foundation portion focuses on LGBTQ support and the nonviolence movement." It was this work that saw him win the 2022 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award.

MCAP Auto #77 - Delon Wright
2020-21 Panini Spectra - Full Spectrum Signatures Meta 05/25

IMG_9474.jpeg

The younger brother of former NBA player Dorrell Wright, Delon grew up in Los Angeles and led his high school to the state championship as a senior, named the division player of the year in the process. Despite this, his poor academic record saw him turn to the City College of San Francisco (community college) for his freshman and sophomore years until he committed to attending the University of Utah for his junior year.

Wright was a Pac-12 star, earning first team and all-Defensive team honours his junior year and opted to return for his senior year and collected the same accolades, becoming the first Utah player to be named First Team All-Pac-12 in consecutive years. He was also awarded the Bob Cousy Award for the Basketball Hall of Fame's top collegiate point guard of the year award.

His college career in the books, Delon was selected with the 20th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors where he spent much of his rookie season on assignment in the D-League before a shoulder injury led him to miss the majority of his sophomore season also. The 2018-19 season was where Wright began to break through, playing 69 games as the Raps back up point guard returning averages of 8 points, 2.9 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1 steal in just under 21 minutes.

Midway through the following season, Wright was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies along with CJ Miles, Jonas Valanciunas and a future 2nd round pick for Mark Gasol, a trade that helped the Raptors go on to win the title that season. Delon thrived late in the season as Mike Conley missed games, notching three triple doubles in the late days of the regular season.

Out of contract, Wright signed a 3 year, $27m contract with the Grizzlies in a sign & trade deal which saw him head to Dallas where he continued his back-up PG role to Luka Doncic. After one season in Dallas, the Mavs were involved in a three team trade which saw him land in Detroit. Delon took over the role of starting point guard on a young Pistons roster and averaged 10.4 points, 5 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.6 steals. Seeing value in his production, the Pistons traded him at the deadline for Cory Joseph and two future second round picks to the Sacramento Kings.

Wright continued to produce off the bench, through to the end of the season for the Kings, but he was once again on the move as the Kings involved in a three-team deal which saw him land in Atlanta. The Hawks failed to live up to expectations during the 2021-22 season and Wright had probably the worst season of his career, with the Hawks letting him walk at the end of the season.

A 30 year old veteran, Wright signed with the Wizards on a 2 year, $16m contract. Making them his 7th team in 5 seasons. He's missed a fair chunk of the season with a hamstring issue, but when he has played has put up steady numbers. The Wizards also have a much better record when Wright plays, making him an important role player in the terms of their season.

To date he has played in 446 regular season games, averaging 7.2 points, 3.1 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 21 minutes throughout his career.

I've stalled on this, not due to cards but lack of time to post write ups. I will have to get back on it soon.

Meanwhile I've got an update for
