Official 2012-13 Offseason thread - trades, rumours, etc

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein:
Sources say that the Thunder, just to be safe, have started brainstorming in-house about whom they plan to pursue should negotiations with (incumbent head coach Scott) Brooks' collapse. Two names, according to sources, that have come up in those discussions: ESPN's Jeff Van Gundy and, yes, 11-ringed coaching free agent Phil Jackson

Pending a possible appeal by the league office, the players union has won a "complete victory" from the arbitrator in a challenge to the NBA's interpretation of a collective bargaining agreement rule.
The union sought to ensure that teams that acquire players via the waiver claim process would retain the same Bird rights as when those players are acquired via trade. The NBA argued that a player's Bird rights should be re-set at the time of the waiver claim.
The ruling could have the strongest impact on the off-season plans of the Knicks, who would not have to use any of their signing exceptions to retain Jeremy Lin or Steve Novak.
Also helped by the ruling would be Chauncey Billups and J.J. Hickson, whose rights would remain with the Clippers and Trail Blazers, respectively.
The NBA reportedly plans to appeal the ruling, which would create uncertainty over the impending free agency of the affected players. The CBA dictates that an arbitrator's decision will not take effect until any appeals process runs its course.

Can someone please explain this rule to me?

Basically the Bird rule means that teams can sign veteran free agents who have played with them for 3 or more years...which Boston did with Larry Bird. That 3 year period is reset whenever a player is traded or waived. The players are now trying to have the 'waived' part excluded from the rule, so veterans who are waived can retain their length of service and thus be signed over the cap by their current team.

This goes back to Gilbert Arenas, when the Warriors couldn't spend to keep him, and a rule was then put in place. With Lin, the Knicks were able to spend the Mid-Level Exception and no other team was able to outbid them. Now, it seems the Knicks can just extend Lin and not use the MLE.

Before this ruling, the Knicks may have had to choose, the MLE to keep Lin or to sign a free agent like Nash. Now they can bring back Lin and Novak, while still being able to spend their MLE on another player.

It does get confusing, there was some talk that other teams, like Toronto, could add extra years to Lin's offer with $10million per year in years three and four of the contract. The Knicks will pay whatever the price is for Lin, they seem to get so much profit from him and can't get under the cap to sign big stars due to the money they pay their front line.

I thought they retained the right when they were traded but the players were trying to get it retained as well via waivers.

Heard that Brandon Roy is on his way back to NBA :)

Yep he answered fans questions via Will Conroy's twitter account, he wont be with Portland though.. he wants to give it another shot! :)

Prays he can come back injury free and find a good role somewhere.

Ben Gordon and a (protected) 2013 pick to Charlotte for Maggette (expiring contract)

Gordon owed $25.6M over next 2 years. Maggette has one year left at 10.9M - net savings to Pistons of $14.7M

The Houston and Minnesota deal is interesting, probably a fair deal. Minnesota get an outside shooter, Houston get a trade asset as they could be trying to make a big deal for a superstar. Not sure what three middle of the first rounds picks, plus Kevin Martin and P Patterson and K Lowry will get, but Houston do want Dwight Howard.

The B Gordon and a pick for Maggette trade is strange. Charlotte do get a pick for paying Gordon for an extra season, compared to keeping Maggette. Bobcats probably get the better of the deal, the draft pick could help, while B Gordon should be picked for fantasy teams now as he could get a lot of shot attempts if they start him at shooting guard.

T-Wolves kinda doesnt make sense to me, they need a SG scorer, not another swingman. They have so many forwards now, unless they're looking to make another trade out of this deal? Rockets came off alright, and does this mean they're going to play Chandler Parsons more this year by moving on Budinger.

Bobcats have lost the plot IMO. Sure they get another 1st Rounder, but it's protected, and who know's when they'll use it (2013, '14 or '15). They're also taking on considerable salary for a mediocre scorer in Gordon, which will undoubtedly hurt them in trying to lure another decent FA (they need a big). MJ making more bone-headed decisions during Draft Time... lol.
