i must say the NRL sure have a funny way about putting there final together i mean how can u play the top of the 8 against the bottom of the 8 and the 1st 2 teams have second chance or anything like that and i hope manly get payback on the storm this year that would be g8 but cant count cronulla either:thumbsup:

As a massive Sharks supporter i dont think this is our year (Grand Final maybe). I would love to see the Dragons beat Manly and the Sharks beat the Raiders this week. Really its hard to see anyone beating the Storm though. I also agree the AFL finals are a much better system.

Mate, I'm not too sure exactly what your saying, yeah I agree the system on paper seems flawed, but it's finals footy and the equation is simple keep winning.....

Teams 1 and 2 do have a second chance if they loose week 1 of the finals and potentially so do teams 3,4,5 and 6 have a second chance if they loose as well.

If 1 and 2 win they have a week off-straight to the semi finals to play for a spot in the grand final (top 2 winners from week 1 go through), generally teams 7 and 8 are eliminated week 1 as they are playing the strongest teams......seems all good too me.

My week 1 tips:

Cronulla should account for Canberra...

The Dragons have the wood on Manly even at Fortress Brookvale,so this one is 50-50. Go the Dragons..(heart not brain)

Goodbye Warriors the Storm will be too good.

Broncos will be too good for the Roosters, unless the conditions are absolutely atrocious again. Broncos suspect in the pigs IMO.

Anyway bring it on !!!!!!!

maybe not this year but i cant see why they cant in the next couple years they taken a big step up and me a manly supporter would love to see sharks to be up there challenging if it were to mean the powerhouse team like the storm were not to make it that would be grouse:)

um if it was more like afl system st george might have a chance to make it to the next game thats the point i mean those teams in 7th and 8th r not given much hope of making it to yhe next week it would have been better if they were playing canberra or something you now. the system could do with a little bit in saying that the way do might be what makes the competion i just thought it would intresting to see what people thought p.s your st george thread give the thought m8

No problems I am here too please.... I do recall winning there once already this year and wasn't there a round 26 game a season or two ago were the Big Red V won 36-0. I'll see you on the hill ......

I admit to having a soft spot for the Storm as they support the Rugby League on the Central Coast, plenty of fan days, open training sessions and they run the Jersy Flegg team out of the coast, yes they are a bit boring at times but hey very professional....

Why reward teams that finish low on the table. It's not perfect but there's always a twist.

Cheers

The way i think it will go this week:

Cronulla too good for Canberra (The same Canberra that only managed 4 away wins all season)
Brisbane too good for the Roosters

I think the other two games are going to be tight. Everyone is writing them off because they are 7th and 8th vs the powers of Melbourne and Manly.

Warriors have been one side that have consistently troubled Melbourne over the past two years. I still expect Melbourne to win but lucky they receive a week off afterwards because they should be pretty sore.

Manly v StGeorge is going to be a cracker of a game to watch. Saints have a strong team on paper and have been playing pretty well of late. I don't think Manly is as far in front of the competition as everyone makes out. I don't expect Manly to be there on grand final day.

honestly I think Manly might struggle this week against the Dragons regardless of where it is, i think the Dragons are 6-2 over the last 8 games at brookvale against Manly from what I heard on the weekend so i mean based on that its going to be a challenge.

Same with Storm, i think Storm will step up and destroy the Warriors because of the fact that the Warriors have beaten us a few times recently, Storm tend to do that come out with a vengeance in these sort of games especially a final, we have a lot of big game players and Inglis, Slater, Cam Smith all are used to big games and tend to really step up for them so I think we should have a decent win. BUT in saying that I think it is going to be one of the toughest games we have played in a long time, the Warriors record against the storm is pretty good especially over the last few years so it should be a good game.

I agree that the AFL final system is better, but I think we could improve on that too, I mean look at last year, the Broncos were 8th and they had lost more games than they had won, now I dont think that sort of a result warrants a finals berth and the 1v8 and 2v7 means that yeah, 1st and 2nd will be almost be guaranteed of a week off and straight though but having said that, i dont think that 5th and 6th deserve a 2nd chance that they can potentially get, when potentially 3rd and 4th can be out in the first week! I also dont like the fact that 1st and 2nd dont really get a 2nd chance because as its been 1st has NEVER lost to 8th in the first week of the finals so if thats the case 1st never really gets an opportunity to lose to a decent team and get that 2nd chance with a similar response to 2nd v 7th.

I agree that 1st and 2nd should advance fairly easily to the 2nd or even 3rd round of finals but really there needs to be a better system in place, I mean how about the top 6, with something like this:

1 v 2
3 v 4
5 v 6

winner of 1v2 goes through to 3rd week, winner of 3v4 plays winner of 5v6 and loser of 1v2 plays loser of 3v4 in 2nd round

Or something along those lines, that just something I thought up in 10seconds but really i think the top 8 finals system that the NRL has at the moment could use some work :)

I completely disagree with this, Melbourne won last year thats it.... I dont get where you are coming from with sick of seeing melbourne win, the team has dominated the NRL for the last 3 years but so far with only 1 Grand Final Win, I guess your just a bit cut from seeing Manly come in 2nd :p

You should be happy I mean the fact that Manly denied any players from playing in rep football and hence insured that Matt Orford got the Dally M should give you some comfort :D (just dont forget that Melbourne made him ;) )

Manly denied players playing rep footy !!! I hadn't heard that one, are you sure?
and hence insured that Matt Orford got the Dally M should give you some comfort :D (just dont forget that Melbourne made him ;) )

Before Melbourne aquired Matt Orford....he was Central Coast NSW born, bred and made. :p

Im pretty sure its true, i recall hearing Warren Smith talking about it on one of the NRL shows, maybe during commentary cant recall exactly what it was on. But didnt anyone find it strange that the team that finished equal 1st on the ladder had not even 1 player in a rep game?

Before Melbourne aquired Matt Orford....he was Central Coast NSW born, bred and made. :p

LOL I knew someone would say that :p:p Melbourne bought him into the spot light ;)

That actually brings up another topic, I hate the salary cap I mean look at the Melbourne team there are like 3 players in the whole team that did something at another club and we acquired them, I mean if it wasnt for the salary cap Matt King would still be here, Izzy wouldnt be going next year (well maybe i think he wanted to go back to be around family as well as get a good deal) Jeremy Smith, Antonio Kafussi, Michael Crocker, all of these players would still be here, and its not like we have gone out and stolen these guys from other clubs we built them up and because we built up other players like Cam Smith, Slater, Cronk, Inglis, Johnson, Hoffman, Lima, White, ect.. we cant afford to keep them, it really sucks.

And this im sure is exactly the same for most other clubs as well :(

Except Brett Stewart. Kite also played for Australia earlier this year too.

I think the reference Smith may have been talking about was the fact that Jamie Lyon told Belemy that his heart wasn't in it to play origin this year so don't select him. Then the team that played Manly the following week complained that Lyon should be inelligible to play because he turned down origin.

been a massice st george fan it is always worring times playing them at brookvale although we do have the wood over them but it is going to be tuff i hope the boys can do it cause i hate manly with a passion

come on you saints

Cant wait for the finals to start....

Broncos are morals against the Roosters... We always beat them (espically on Good Fridays ) !!!

Cronulla to beat Raiders.... Raiders had a good run into the finals, but they are short on players... & in their last game, they gave away 34 points to the wooden spooners....

Dragons to beat Manly.... only cos Dragons have the wood on Eagles at Brookie & the dreaded 7 beat 2 curse....

Storm in a tight one over Warriors....

In the end.... Storm v Broncos in the GF !!!! hehe....only cos Im a Broncos' man !!!

The mighty Broncos will account for the Roosters and every other team they play on their way to a Grand Final win in 2008......YEH BABY......:)
