Newsagents stock

Three of the newsagents in Brisbane South listed as being stockists for this release didn't receive any despite being told they would. Maybe not such a bad thing with the 'slim pickings'in newsagent boxes to date.

seems like a lack of mojos but oddly there was at least 3 or 4 team league sensations found within the first two days of release from newsagents alone, obviously doesnt speak for everyone with a small sample size but im not sure how many on average have been coming out of the breaks either

You made that number up didn't you? ;)

If that were true it would only leave 10 Cases left for Newsagents. So the list of 172 stockists that was released each got 14 packets of Elite .
Well 200 is high as I originally went off there being 16 case cards 🤦‍♂️ but would be at least 136 if the parallel case cards are numbered to 17 would it not 🤷‍♂️ 8 x 17?

Yep having a list of stockist is completely different to them actually getting stock. I’ve spoken to several that use to get stock and got none. The few that did got a email saying they wouldn’t be able to order anymore and what they got was it. Pretty sad really.

TLA are contracted to meet a minimum order volume that must be supplied to Newsagencies. Obviously this contract was fulfilled. The excess volume that would normally overflow to Newsagents due to not enough demand elsewhere did not exist for this release.

So Newsagents were given a chance to order what they wanted to help with their demand? Or did the demand only come from one area? I’m sure if many were given a chance to order more or any in many cases they would have taken it up instead they got told after the fact of stock going elsewhere. Plus I won’t mention the fact that minimum allotment of stock was obviously all the hitless boxes as part of it 😳
Can never please everyone in anything but there are better ways of doing things to make things more fair for all involved & not just a few imo.

Why would a Newsagent, who has Trading Cards as 0.1% of the different product lines they offer, get 1st priority on orders over small businesses that are fully committed to growing the hobby? Who's still going to be there supporting the products in a down year? The small hobby shops who have no alternatives because they only deal in trading cards.....or a retail shop with hundreds of other options?

So it spreads it around more and not to just a tiny few controlling majority of stock that’s why. People will always buy to get their cards no matter what. If one release was a 100% pure newsagents only release people will create demand for them to order more and it would sell out. It’s the collectors that push the demand yet only a few control said demand 😳

With Ovato controlling the stock going out to newsagents (and dealing with the potential returns) this can be a difficult process and TLA may end up with packs/boxes being sent back which they then have to pay for this service and have goods that are then hard to move on (unsealed products).

If given the choice as a business, would you rather:

1) Sell to a Hobby Business where the demand is strong (exceeding supply at present) with a guaranteed sale - no returns

or

2) Sell to a Newsagent where you you may end up with full or opened boxes and packs being returned at the end of the sales cycle - and also paying Ovato to do this on your behalf?

As Michael said TLA provided a limited amount of stock to the more regional newsagents however the vast majority of the stock went to the bigger resellers where the demand was so strong that TLA could have probably sold another 100 cases had they been produced.

I think that we have seen this year across all sports not just NRL, but the market locally and globally is strong and its seen by the number of people breaking this product either as a customer or a group breaker.

Elite 2019 only sold out just a couple of months ago at the wholesale level, Elite 2020 had already done that before it was released to the market.

I think its a great sign that stock is selling so quickly...... means its a strong market and people are collecting on a much wider scale!

I'm sure this will all be taken into account next year and we may see TLA go back to 3 releases if the demand is still there? Who knows?

Cheers
Matt

I think the main issue is definitely the number of hits and their allocation. Things like ruby mojos for example being advertised at 1 per 24 packs while also being #/40 very blatantly does not add up by a good couple hundred boxes when 144 x 40 only gives 5760 rubies across 6400 boxes or whatever the run is this year. And if the 640 or so boxes that dont contain rubies are all allocated to newsagent stock that essentially creates 2 separate releases with different odds per pack

I don't mind if dealers get a better deal for keeping the hobby afloat but i wish these odds were more accurately reflected on the sell sheet and potentially the price of packs for the retail release

I would have no issue if 100% of stock went to dealers. I’m all for supporting dealers and do so by buying a case or 2 of each release.
However, if you are going to sell stock through newsagents there should never be missing hits or higher frequencies of dud boxes especially when it’s more expensive as opposed to buying through a dealer. It is clear this has been happening since 2016 Elite and it’s just wrong. I think it’s about time TLA got called out for it.
