5 years. 85 million - or 80 million depending on which article you read.
That's about 6000 times better value for Olrando than the Lewis deal.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Only 21 years old, Dwight Howard already says he wants to retire in Orlando.

He committed to sticking around for a while longer Thursday, as the former No. 1 overall pick signed a five-year contract extension worth approximately $80 million.

"Me and Mickey Mouse will be here forever," Howard joked.

It was Orlando's second multimillion dollar move in two days. The Magic officially pulled free agent All-Star Rashard Lewis from Seattle on Wednesday, agreeing to a six-year contract worth more than $110 million in a a sign-and-trade deal.

Those two moves will define the team for the foreseeable future, and general manager Otis Smith likes what he sees.

"You have to have a big guy in the middle. [Coach Stan Van Gundy] talked about the great perimeter players, and I feel very good about the opportunity to sign a big guy for a long period of time," Smith said.

Howard averaged a team-best 17.6 points and 12.3 rebounds last season, making his first All-Star game. He has not missed any of Orlando's 82 regular-season games in three seasons, and already holds the franchise record for consecutive games played (246).

Howard shot 81 percent from the field over a five-game stretch last season, 10th best in NBA history behind eight Wilt Chamberlain performances and one stretch from Bob Hanson. He finished second in the league in field goal percentage at 60.3 percent, and third in rebounding.

He says he's still improving.

"Orlando has really seen just a little bit of Dwight Howard," he said. "There are a lot of things that I need to do to get better. I don't really think I have scratched the surface of the things I know I am capable of doing, but each year and each game is an experience for me. And really I am just so excited right now, it's hard to explain."

Like Lewis, Howard joined the league straight out of high school. But the 265-pounder from Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy was the top overall pick, while Lewis slipped into the second round.

Still, Howard said he didn't feel pressured. Not as a team leader and not as the recipient of a rich new deal.

"God didn't give me big shoulders for nothing, so I feel I can handle a lot of pressure," he said. "I am just very excited."

Howard and Lewis speak highly of each other, and both are excited to play on the same team. Lewis gives Orlando a prolific scorer inside and out -- a 6-foot-10 3-point threat to combine with Howard's brute inside strength.

"My goal is to win a championship and we just added a great piece to our team that is going to help us get to that level," Howard said.

The Magic have also transformed themselves by subtraction. Grant Hill signed with the Phoenix Suns after seven injury-plagued seasons here, and Orlando allowed Darko Milicic to go elsewhere. The 7-footer left on bad terms after the Magic stopped pursuing him, a reversal from Smith's promise he was an offseason priority.

The team has also been through three head coaches, firing Brian Hill, hiring and losing Billy Donovan and finally tapping Van Gundy.

The former Miami Heat coach said some forget how skilled Howard is for his age.

"Just go back and try to find me people that at his age have been as good, and then just look at the career graph of big guys," he said. "They are going to keep improving, always have. Their peak is sort of somewhere at 29-30, so there is a lot of development for him over the years."

So Lewis is getting $30M more for 1 extra Year??

FARK ME!!!!

What is this world coming to.

I'd rather concentrate on Dwight being the #1 scoring option, and have signed Gerald Wallace for $50M less!!!!

Money, money, money... It's all it comes down to. i thought Dwight would have been on the first palne out of Orlando. I thought with the Big Shaq retiring real soon, Miami would have been a good option for him along side Wade. Not that I follow it that closely, but can you see howard ever winning a chapionship with the Magic? Hmmmmm

Well, that's good news for us..

Dwight will get his max contract when he's 25. there's nothing to be worried.

And there are many players didn't win championship in NBA and still be great players. Loyalty is something u can't find often, if the team has bad management or poor coaching, they probably cant' find the way to win..

I hope magic is going to the right direction, but it's pretty easy in NBA..1:30 shots, if ur in East.. ur chances are particularly high.. :)

He's already saying he wants to retire in Orlando!!!

At only 21, he's already talking about where he wants to reitre????

He's getting a lot of money, even though he is getting less than Lewis, his time will come when the contract comes up to the option year.......if he is still this good (probably better) he will be able to resign for a much bigger deal.

What can he do with the extra $30 mil that he can't already do with the $80mil he's getting?

The other thing about his contract is that it actually doesn;t come into effect till after next season, so he still has a year to wait...........at least he is locked in, just in case of some 'Act of God'!

Ersk

This is a good move, ahha obviously.

I look forward to seeing Dwight take on the role of the modern-day Shaq in the next few seasons.

Jim,

well, shaq was alot better and greater player... i just like Dwight because he's from Orlando Magic, his game is still very raw and his shots are 70% dunks.. he needs to improve his offensive skills as well as fast break runs..

I wish Dwight would be able to play the mix of David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon... just can't get enough actions from him in most of his games and his jumpers are still short...

I am hoping Dwight would fill the gap for magic.. as well as our newly signed Lewis.. lots of expectations for next season....

so happy that, we didn't give up our young talents like nelson, redick and ariza.. :)

i would love to see Howard V Oden. would be an awesome matchup. glad he wants to end his career with orlando.

Well im a happy man for one reason and one reason only. We have Dwighty for another 5 seasons :) .

Im loving the idea of Shard being a "Magicman" but his contract is incredibly high....

I just hope this is the start of somethin successful :)

I agree that it's a great thing, any team re-signing their Franchise Player is always a good thing (for them, that is).

But I really can't understand how they work their budget. I mean, what'd they say (another thread), that in 5 years, the Magic will have 3 salaries (Dwight, Jameer & Lewis) that will put them AT the salary cap limit.

I mean, you can't spend all your money on 3 guys, and either expect a great draft pick, or expect to sign some good helpers (and they'll need good ones) for next to nothing.

Oh well, I guess it's something they're gonna have to work out, it's what they do.

Well, that's art of media. exaggeration is core of their perspectives.... in 5 years.. i don't even think these 3 guys will hit 45mil combined..and Lewis's 6th year is the fat one, however, he's gotta meet tons of criteria that will eventually make him not to get the entire 22.8mil in the 6th year.. so let's think about next 5 yrs.. let's say Lewis 20 + Dwight 16 + and Jameer won't be getting more than 7-8mil, that's max 44mil.. in just one year.. salary cap will jump about 3mil, so think about next 5 year salary cap.. it would probably be 70-75mil cap...

no offense to Nelson fans, i don't think he's going to be a top point guard..(considering he will not make 10mil a year in his career, but pretty hard to say as Otis Smith already signed Lewis max..).... he's been in the league for a while, he just didn't make big shots and didn't bring the energy to the team.. to be honest, he's pretty poor point guard in Orlando Magic history, Skiles, Penny, Billups, even Hudson made pretty good headlines... even when Hill's point-forward game was even more organized..

salary cap and contracts are based on anticipations of salary cap and its future ones... so, i don't think it's no biggie, since Heat currently now paying 7-8mil over threshold.. and they are still doing fine.. it's just luxury tax teams didn't want to pay.. usually NYK and Blazers didn't care much in past decade..

Orlando is now not paying Luxury tax.. and if i am not mistaken they can still sign MLE player...
