LeBron Files Paperwork To Change Jersey Number To 6

Don't post a lot in nba section, but wanted to add my 2 cents
I have to agree with Matt.... Was going to post something similar when I read the first page, but he took the words right out of my mouth!

I don't have anything against LeBron, bad sportsmanship or being a poser, he is an exciting player and he will be a HOFer, and seems like he is becoming more of a team player as the years go on but how many rings he ends up with? Who knows! People who cut him down reeks of tall poppy syndrome....

HAVING SAID THAT definitely seems like a cash grab to me! I don't think he will switch teams, he will be a franchise player and this change of numbers (and probably locked in a higher percentage of jersey sales for switching) is probably a sweetener for the impending deal to stay with the Cavs.

As for respect to MJ, a little part of me thinks that Bron regards himself as the new and improved MJ...

Great post man...and your last line is spot on i reckon.

I havent thought much of lebron since the well publicised "storming off" after last years finals series....but there is no doubting he is a great player.

The thing that annoys me even more about the lack of sportsmanship is he made no apoligies about it and has continued to do it when he loses important games.

The most recent being the loss to the Nuggs last week, when he literally looked like he was ready to cry and stormed off without acknowledging Carmelo, whom he claims to have a "best freind" type relationship.

Haha....the journo's have started on him too....

LeBron James isn’t honoring the greatness of No. 23, but manipulating Michael Jordan’s marketing savvy. The changing of his jersey number as a nod to M.J.’s basketball career is a purely fictional cover story. It’s a tribute to Jordan all right, but more like a cynical ode to his business sense. James wants to grow his global brand and push product; flooding the market with a fresh jersey number does the job.

LeBron James' No. 23 jersey has trailed Kobe Bryant's No. 24 in sales the past two seasons. Between now and then, James ought to spare us the fantasy that moving from No. 23 to No. 6 is about anyone or anything else.

All about Michael?

This is all about LeBron.

When LeBron James should be most concerned with taking Kobe Bryant’s(notes) NBA title, he’s making a bid for his standing as the No. 1 seller of NBA jerseys. James watched Bryant make the switch from No. 8 to No. 24 and how it moved him to the top of the list. For the past two seasons, James has finished second to Bryant. No more, James decided. Kobe gave him the blueprint for selling out stock, and now LeBron’s embraced it.

Looking back, Bryant never tried to turn his jersey change into some magnanimous gesture. He switched numbers, and that was that. He wanted to sell jerseys, and he did. He never pretended it was a genuflection to anything but commerce.

Somehow, James has boxed himself with this ridiculous story about how no one should ever wear No. 23, and he’s the first to give it up and maybe everyone else should follow him. This was met with a roll of the eyes, with everyone asking: Wait, you’re giving up No. 23 to take … No. 6?

What about Bill Russell and his 11 NBA championships? Jordan, the greatest ever, cleared a path for the worldly basketball star. But Russell was a black star in turbulent Boston in the 1960s. He anchored the greatest dynasty in the sport’s history, and they’ll remember him as the most dominant defensive player to ever live. In the end, James and everyone else understand this has nothing to do with Jordan or Russell, with No. 23 or No. 6. This is business, and he’s insulting everyone’s intelligence suggesting it’s something else.

The idea that James is honoring Jordan is, well, pure mythology. In a lot of ways, LeBron’s working to distance himself from him. Truth be told, they are rivals far more than confidants. With different lines of shoes, they are competing for power within Nike. They’ll be competing in the Eastern Conference, where the Charlotte Bobcats have beaten the Cavaliers two of three times this season and could be an opening-round opponent. They’ll be competing in collective bargaining talks, owner versus player.

They’ve never been close, although Jordan has never been overly generous with the next generation of NBA icons. He’ll show those players within the Jordan Brand some attention, but his interaction with LeBron and Kobe mostly stems from professional courtesy. Jordan is still protective of his legacy as the greatest player ever, and he’s never been terribly motivated to lend a hand in the overtaking of that.

Around the time James started with his bit about retiring Jordan’s number, Jordan sat with Pat Riley in Miami for a Cavs-Heat game in November. It didn’t go unnoticed to those sitting around them how often James would peer over, searching for some kind of approval from Jordan. He’d make a play and glance over – and it was probably no accident that Jordan offered little to no response. After all, Jordan was there to promote Dwyane Wade(notes) as an endorser to his line of shoes, so James was treated as afterthought.

“He’s always looked for that approval from Michael,” one Jordan associate says, “and I don’t know that he’s ever really gotten it – or ever will.”

So James filed paperwork with the NBA prior to the Wednesday deadline, and should he stay with the Cavaliers he’ll wear his Olympic team No. 6 next season. Should he leave, he can wear whatever he wants. Between now and then, no one else will care much about how many jerseys he sells, about how far he surpasses Bryant on the NBA’s list in 2011.

For all his fascination with global branding, with empire building, peddling jerseys doesn’t move LeBron closer to Jordan and Bryant and Russell. Only championships do.

This time, the Cavs have delivered James the supporting cast to do it. No more excuses. James comes armed for the Lakers now. He comes with his legacy on the line, measured in one indisputable and defining way: Before he beats him in the NBA Store, LeBron James needs to beat Kobe Bryant in the NBA Finals.

 Bron will never surpass Jordan in anyway. On and off the Court (as a bussinessman) Jordan is/was the biggest thing associated with Basketball. If indeed he gets in and amongst it with the Bobcats, you can almost guarantee a huge jump in support both financially and amongst fans for the Bobcats. As for out on the court, the proof is in the pudding.... Once Lebron gets close, because he won't pass, what MJ has done, then and only then can he start claiming half the crap that is thrown his way!

Oh, and Im not a Lebron hater, im just realistic and can seperate fact from fiction! :)

wait for J Rich to follow suit in the coming days

shame Upper Deck went bust....imagine the Bron/Russel or Bron/Dr J dual auto number pieces :woot:

didnt think of that!! they would look insane... hopefully panini fills the void, unfortunately the majority of their products are utter garbage

A few things: That "article" BennyJ put up was little more than a Lebron hate-fest, probably written by Jamele Hill, a Kobe nut-hugger, or some girl who got shot down by him at his HS prom... Fair enough, it's obviously something from an "official" site, but so was a crappy article the other day about Lebron going to the Lakers because "he needed PJ's coaching, Phil's a winner, and he'd have Kobe there as well, hopefully." Don't ask me how the Lakers were planning on getting Lebron withought packaging Kobe WITH some other talent, but they supposedly had "sources close to Lebron" tell them this... Well, "sources close to me" tell me the "writer" can put the hand lotion away and stop fiddling with himself! Anyway, enough of that.

I also see a lot of people saying how disrespectful it is to Bill Russell to wear his number, somehow implying that Russells number isn't worthy of respect coz Lebron's not suggesting it get retired also. C'mon! Lebron's what, 25? A bit hard to grow up idolizing, or even WATCHING a player, who retired more than 20 years before you were BORN. Yeah, I know, watch youtube, read a book, know your history. And people like Chad do, and I respect that. But most people, myself included, inevitably end up watching/supporting/idolizing someone who they could turn on ESPN and watch readily. Hell, I know Donald Bradman was a great batsman, and is widely considered the GOAT, but me personally I get more excited about Tendulkar, Lara, Dean Jones even, coz I could come home from school, turn on the TV and watch them. I honestly have not seen more than about a 2-3 minute clip of Bradman, which leads me to not get as enthused about his as some would.

As for the actual changing of the number, and filling out paperwork for said change, this I find interesting. Because Lebron could go to any team, except Boston (can't afford him), Philly (not in the running for him), and Phoenix (can't afford him), without filling out the paperwork. The only other team he needs to fill out the forms for is if he's planning on staying in Cleveland. Of course this means nothing more than he's still considering re-signing, but it's a positive none-the-less...

I find this interesting.....

So your bashing the person that wrote the article but your not disagreeing with the main point in the article?!?

Of course the reasoning him for switching numbers is the fact that it will make him MORE money! The fact that he's lodged the paperwork proves that covering for the fact he could resign with Cleveland which will then render the lodgement useless!

He is doing nothing but building his empire, but it was a great (no matter how see through) attempt at trying to make it look like it was out of respect.....

so does that mean upper deck are not making any nba cards anymore?

I agree it is ALSO to sell more jerseys, but I do believe he also thinks the jersey should be retired to respect Jordan. I also find Jordan gets a bit TOO much respect at times, but Lebron doing it now as opposed to when he entered the league could be a) he's got more clout to get a league-wide retirement done, and b) that Jordan was voted into the HOF either early this season or last... As for Kobe changing his number, I thought it was humourous how he came up with 24 coz he "thinks ball 24/7", or something like that. Noone thought that sounded corny? It certainly didn't get as much attention, (a fair share of it negative), as Lebron's...

Maybe Lebron should concentrate a little more on basketball and less about his bank balance...it's getting tired and old. He wants to win, well take less cash to allow your team to sign better support and BAM, you can win Lebron. Not hard. Just requires a little "I play basketball for winning" instead of "I play basketball for winning and money equally".

the reason why he picked no.6 is because his second favourite player is DrJ aka Julius Erving, thats why his USA jersey is no.6. So then the next question is why should he be allowed to wear no.6 are u sayin DrJ wasnt the best of his Era? this is a tough one cause MJ is a legend but Lebron thinks he is king and ppl should follow him. it wont happen!!! beckham plays with 23!! Shane Warne use to play with 23 and he was the greatest... i cant see numbers been retired or well start seeing ppl with 5 digits on there jerseys. Do you agree???

There is also another great number 6 that managed to win 11 rings.. I think his name was Russell.

I have to agree though that Lebron should concentrate on his team and winning the championship.

Cheers
Matt
