I haven't watched any of his games. Has he been playing against second string or third string teams?
If by your reasoning of him been too slow, then there's not a chance he'll make it as a returner. He isn't too slow however(4.5 40), but I suspect his running style and the fact that he's still getting use to running in full uni, make it look like he is. I'm surprised how well he's reading his blocks and cutting late. It takes a while to trust those blockers, so for him to pick it up so early is impressive. I'd like to see him lower his pads and helmet a little and put a bit of hurt on someone towards the end of a run though. That'll come with experience. At the end of the day, hes's been suited up twice, so where he is at, is astonishing really. I think he'll get a roster spot on potential ( and probably a bit for marketing), but it may not be with the 49ers, but I think someone will give him a shot. I really thought at the start that he might have to do a year in nfl Europe, the cfl or maybe a semi professional league, but I don't think he'll need it.
I don't think he is too slow at all. Sure his straight line speed may not be the fastest (which is all the 40-time is), but as a returner his ability to make people miss and break tackles will be a lot more important.
Random fact for those that don't know, the reason teams started looking at 40-yard times is because that is what distance of the average punt (back when they first started with such a thing) and the idea behind this was that the average 40-yard punt had a hang time of 4.5 seconds, so that was a key time they were looking for defenders to be able to reach the punt returner the same time the ball was arriving.
Ha, sluggish and averaged 28 yards per punt return. No ones talking about Williams, cause he'll likely be looking for a new career in two weeks time
