Allen Iverson rallies in the voting to earn starting spot in All-Star game

NEW YORK (AP) -- With a late rally, Allen Iverson is an All-Star starter again.

Iverson surged from behind in the fan voting to earn a starting spot in next month's game, a person with knowledge of the results told The Associated Press on Thursday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the official totals weren't to be released until later Thursday.

Iverson's selection was first reported by The Rocky Mountain News, who also reported that Denver teammate Carmelo Anthony earned his first starting nod.

Iverson rallied to pass Tracy McGrady in the final weeks of voting to earn his first start since moving to the Western Conference early last season. He started seven straight All-Star games while playing for Philadelphia, but fell short last year after the 76ers dealt him to the Nuggets in December 2006.

The two-time MVP of the All-Star game will make his ninth appearance on Feb. 17 in New Orleans.

i'm happy if this in fact is true. not just because i'm a Nuggets fan but with T-Macs limited playing time this season, IMO, didn't deserve to be a starter. AI has been hot all year for the Nuggz and deserves to start!!

And let's be honest here....and by no means am i bagging T-Mac cos i like him.... but without all the Asians voting for him becuase he is on the same team as Yao, there is no way his votes would be so high anyway!!

That's great to hear... obviously I like Tmac too, but AI is my main man & as you said, Tmac has been injured for a lot of the year anyway.

mate i cant believe they would skip CP3 as a starter for iverson.

they didnt 'skip' paul, kobe and iverson got the 1st and 2nd most public votes respectively, therefore they have to start. nash or paul should get the reserve spots.

Do you reckon the League rigg'd it, as Tmac doesn't want to play the Allstar game anyway. He was way ahead, then all of a sudden AI justs overtakes him at then end. It's the perfect situation for all and AI thoroughly deserves it.

TMAC was calling not playing last year when it was announced it was in NO, cause of safety in NO.

Then he was injured so he wanted to miss it to rest up, but Stern said he had to go cause he was leading voting a starter, Then all of a sudden AI pips him, so now he can do what Nash did the other year when he was in the same situation,(slightly injured) PHX rested him the last game before ASW, so he was classed as injured and didn't have to play in the allstar game and he was replaced. First game after Nash was back up to 38 mins.

It's a great thing for both players Tmac gets rest and AI get the reward he deserves after a great first Half.=D>

NEW YORK -- With a late rally, Allen Iverson is an All-Star starter again.

Iverson surged from behind in the fan voting to earn a starting spot in next month's game when the vote totals were released Thursday night. Denver Nuggets teammate Carmelo Anthony will join him in New Orleans after earning his first starting nod.

Lakers star Kobe Bryant will team with Iverson in the Western Conference backcourt. Houston center Yao Ming was voted in by the fans for the sixth straight season at center, while San Antonio's Tim Duncan was chosen as the other forward. He has been selected to every All-Star Game since entering the league in 1997.

Boston's Kevin Garnett, the MVP of the 2003 game, was the leading vote-getter with 2,399,148 votes. He will be joined in the East frontcourt by Cleveland forward LeBron James and Orlando center Dwight Howard, a first-time starter. Miami's Dwyane Wade and New Jersey guard Jason Kidd round out the starting lineup.

Iverson rallied to pass Houston's Tracy McGrady in the final weeks of voting to earn his first start since moving to the Western Conference early last season. He started seven straight All-Star Games while playing for Philadelphia, but fell short last year after the 76ers dealt him to the Nuggets in December 2006.

The two-time MVP of the All-Star Game beat McGrady by 10,410 votes and will make his ninth appearance on Feb. 17 in New Orleans.

"It's a good feeling. I think it's a tribute to my teammates and coaching staff because without those guys none of that would be possible," Iverson said in a statement. "But most of all I just want to thank the fans for appreciating what I go out and do on the court night in and night out. It's just a great feeling and an honor, and I'm just looking forward to trying to play the best that I can play for the fans."

Garnett, another perennial starter, also will experience the game from the other conference.

The Boston forward will appear in his 11th straight All-Star Game, second among active players to Shaquille O'Neal's 14, and ninth start. The longtime Minnesota Timberwolves star is a leading MVP candidate at midseason for the impact he has made on the Celtics, who own the NBA's best record at 33-7 after winning only 24 games last season.

Iverson was more than 80,000 votes behind McGrady, who has struggled with injuries this season, when the final update was released two weeks ago. He ended up with 1,203,152 votes. McGrady finished with 1,192,742.

James, the MVP of the 2006 game and the leading vote-getter last season, was second overall with 2,108,831 votes. He said he never looks at getting selected as tiresome.

"It's always exciting because the fans vote you in. They vote me in as a starter every year," James said. "Without the fans there's no us. They dream about having all these guys out on the court at the same time. It's their opportunity to get that. It's always special."

The coaches from each conference will choose the reserves, who will be announced next Thursday.

Rigged? Nah - if yr injured u just pull out and they pick the next guy. Congrats to Iverson. On merit I think Paul should be there but AI has played well and as u guys said Paul will definitely be on the bench.

Sorry all you AI lovers but imho i don't think AI would have made the team if the fans didn't vote him in. If Tmac and Kobe had started that leaves 3 G (maybe 4) Paul cos its in NO, Nash and Ginobili (coaches love him) and AI and Bdiddy fighting for the potential 4th G spot.

The West team is going to be loaded. They could have an A and a B team and both would still smash whatever team the East can scrape together..

Yet the east has won 2 of the last 3. Also with a starting lineup of KG/Howard/Lebron/Wade/Kidd I think the East will compete.......

AI got in by just 10400 votes!

And Stevie wasn't too far behind T-Mac either - 18600 votes!

Looked like a close one for that position.

Lucky I had my votes in for AI!
