hey guys ...
even though im from Adelaide i have been told a fair few stories lately of casses of cards that constantly go missing from courier depots and shipping containers that get broken into up in Sydney and Brisbane etc....all of which end up on ebay..and has got me wondering how many HOT boxes i have purchased lately.I know there are plenty of honest sellers on ebay but i have been assured time and time again that 80% of them are stolen goods..why else would you sell a box that retails for $170 for $80-100 and waste your time importing them..anyway ..weather you care or not i just thought it was worth a mention. :D

I was debating whether or not to reply to this thread....but I couldn't help myself!!

The story sounds a bit like an urban myth....I'd be confident that the systems in place for post and couriers provide fairly high security for all postal items, particularly post Sept 11. (Although I'm not discounting the possiblity of theft altogether!!)

i have been assured time and time again that 80% of them are stolen goods
If 80% are "HOT", that means, of the 111 boxes listed on Oz Ebay at the moment 89 are stolen. There's only 4-5 people regularly selling boxes mainly 8088edge, cardmania (a shop in Geelong), myself and a few others. I can only speak for myself and say all my boxes are imported direct from the US (I assume the others do too) and I have never had anything go missing coming into the country.

why else would you sell a box that retails for $170 for $80-100 and waste your time importing them

We can sell cheaper on Ebay because we have none of the overheads of a shop (ie Rent, Rates, Power, Insurance etc)
If you can buy a box for $40-50 and sell for $80-100 that's a good return on investment in anyone's books.

I really doubt there is anyone out there actively out there flogging off bball cards...like a shipment comes in, goes through customs, in sydney, the same customs office is a very very large australia post depot...from there Im guessing it goes to your local centre, and then into the van and delivered by contractors...I highly doubt there is some sorta Fast and the Furious sorta scams going on

As another Adelaide boy, there is a huge difference in the price charged by the only card shop in town, and the prices of boxes on eBay. I have dealt with the 3 major sellers Marcus mentioned (All Star Card, 8088edge & Cardmania), and have never had a problem. As Marcus mentioned, they don't have the overheads that stores do, and I know in the case of 8088edge, that he has dealer contacts in the States, and can hence get boxes/cases in cheaper. (I think he is a recognised dealer with the companies, so he can direct order from Topps/UD).

The case with the card store in Adelaide, is they get there boxes (& Beckett's) from another retailer in Vic, so you are paying at least 2 lots of markups. It's unfortunate, but they still need to be able to operate too.

hey dudes im not accusing any of you ebay sellers of being dodgy!!..im simply saying that i KNOW of people who have had containers broken into and also gone missing from depots etc...and they are not regular ebay sellers....dont forget i have bought cards and boxes from all of these people that you have mentioned AND pulled good cards and had great service from them.I didnt post this thread to ruffle feathers..but more simply to make you aware that ebay is just like cash converters...only easier to sell goods.

Well, I'd be surprised if someone who had a shipment of "hot" cards didn't use EBAY to access potential victi.. customers. It's not like there's a huge market for them here.

I've been buying a bit lately and no one has approached me. And if they did, I'd put 'em in.

Sounds like made up shit to me.

Provide some proof, then I might listen. Until then, stop speaking out of your ass.
