2020 footy stars prestiege release.

Really interesting discussion.

Most will know I’m an Eagles team collector. So far, I haven’t found it TOO bad trying to get every Eagles card from most recent releases. I figure it’s going to be a long-term project so even if I can’t get a few cards straight away, eventually they should hopefully pop up and I’ll be able to work something out to get them.

But I think the balance for team collectors is probably right on a knife’s edge right now, as you guys have touched on. And I reckon the cards that took it to that edge are the Green Parallels. Trying to get the 11 different cards numbered to 60 is both difficult and expensive. Consider that as recently as 2014, the most limited card in Series 2 was limited to 200! And that was Series 2, not a premium version of Series 1.

If I were in the position to give Select advice, I’d say to be wary of continuing too much further down the current path they seem to be on. The Prestige set is probably as hard as you want to make it for team collectors to complete their set. Any harder and, as you guys have mentioned, the team collector will become rarer and rarer. And I think this would have a pretty detrimental effect, given that team collectors make up a decent chunk of collectors.

I should note I’ve been praising Select for where they’ve brought the hobby to compared to where it was a few years ago, so I’m not meaning to be critical. Rather, I just think there are warning signs becoming stronger that I hope are noticed before it’s too late to save the team collector.

Its definitely a delicate balance for Select as they have to put more lowered numbered stuff in to make sure there is maximum value in a box / case but also as mentioned above need to make sure things are attainable to keep people interested

Personally as a collingwood fan i don't bother trying to get our low numbered as its just too difficult, i just buy a couple of boxes of each release and what i get i get.

Where the low numbering also makes it difficult is trying to put together sets of the numbered inserts, for example the brownlow vote getters a dusty is so much harder / expensive to get than a swallow so it makes it difficult to try and get insert sets also

very well said...and select do deserve praise for lifting there game from what it was a few years ago.
love reading peoples thoughts!

For myself i became more the targeted collector then a full team collector. I target what i consider to be the biggest hitters in the richmond category..why, i believe everyone is on there own journey in this hobby. I would rather spend my hard earned on a "big hitter" then spred it on compleating a team set just to have it.. Its what is great about the hobby - each to there own.

After looking back on the way I used to buy boxes n such and the amount of money I was burning, I'm gonna stick to a method of buying a box or two to scratch that itch while buying my PC cards when the market is flooded. It's just a matter of figuring out when exactly that is.

Completely agree. It's so strange at how every release now the card market is essentially a "U". First few days after release everything is red hot, then people (mostly flippers) trying to desperately scrape back their money as fast as possible before stock begins to dry up and prices are forced back up.

As a Hawthorn collector, I find it sad that It's often hard to trade with others when your team is in such high-demand - to complete my sets I'm always forced into selling my cards not needed, and then just buying the ones I do. While I understand this is reality, it does take away the fun out of the "trading hobby" which is what cards should all be about. There's nothing more satisfying than completing a win-win trade which lands wanted cards in each others collections

This is the way I’m heading too mate. Concentrating on one player first and then others later on if funds allow.

Its not that i would not want a full sweep of all the cards(i would love it) !..its trying to balance this hobby and its financially raising costs with real life responsibility( partner / kids / margage / never ending god damm bills!!! enough already!!!
I stay in the game because i love the hobby and collecting cards of the team i love. Targeting certain cards is the financially responsible way to grow my collection as apposed to just buying for the sake of buying.

Great to see the Dusty show stopper #4 (jump no#) sell at a great price...$1550 is pretty spot on with our earlier in the thread discussion..Hope who ever bagged it treasures it for its a special card..

im just happy the hijinx stopped with the card and we (the community) can price it at a stable and sensable price...the hobby is better for it.

A good point @Jonathon M about team collectors giving up. I collect Hawks, and 5 years ago I could virtually collect all Hawks cards released. Now with 3 releases last year and 3 this year with very low numbered cards it’s impossible for a collector like me to keep up. In just Prestige there’s 39 numbered insert cards for me to try and collect. Then there’s Footy Stars earlier plus a Dominance 2 to come. It’s just too much. My collecting priorities have to change and I need to be comfortable with not collecting them all. And who knows, maybe one day it will all be too much and I’ll give up.
As a Collingwood collector I'm increasingly focusing more on pre-1990 cards and less on numbered non-signature cards. I just don't see the value in paying hundreds for a numbered card that isn't signed or a guernsey.

So a bit of card drama

A picture was posted a few weeks back showing someone having both the Stephenson and De Goey #001 Showstoppers

A lot of people gave up the chase and stopped buying boxes because of the photoshopped version, he probably should have mentioned it sooner poor form

Yeah, I just saw this a little bit back... apparently its a joke... can someone please point out to me what is funny about this at all?

"Deception" and "manipulation" are words that come to mind before "humor" does

always one idiot in the group..what is the point of doing that?
congrats to whoever now has the #1 De Goey...great card and a huge future investment!

Not much I dont think, seems to be more about the team than the person on it. I mean Jake Stringer SS are going for $500+ because it's Essendon.
jona, you really dont like stringer do you??..what, a closet doggies fan who still cant let go?
