Gaspar retires, effective immediately
Friday May 4 14:42 AEST
Richmond's two-time All Australian defender Darren Gaspar announced his AFL retirement after Tigers coach Terry Wallace said the club wanted to focus on younger players.
Gaspar was in the final year of his contract and Wallace wanted him to remain available for senior selection for the rest of the season.
But the 30-year-old, who said he didn't agree with the club's assessment of his recent form, decided to announce his retirement effective immediately.
Gaspar was chosen by Sydney with the No.1 pick in the 1993 national draft.
He was traded to Richmond in 1996.
Gaspar played 228 AFL games, won Richmond's best and fairest award in 2001 and was a two-time All Australian in 2000 and 2001.
The Tigers have lost their opening five matches this season.
