Donald sterling mess

Can't see how they can force him to sell, what if he agrees to sell but be's an arse about it and says he wants 20 billion for the clippers, not sure what nba could do because in a way having the team for sale even at that price is still keeping with what they want, think the lifetime ban is abit harsh tho, I mean if it was not for the gold digging mistress none of thins would have even been released, don't get me wrong he can't be %100 racist because the bird he was tapping was not white, hard to tell what she is with all that surgery lol, mind you nothing is being said that the mans married and yet he has a mistress in plan view and everyone know yet that's ok for the nba. It must be nice to be rich because if I told my missus that i was staying with her but shagging this little hot Asian and taking her out to game and that I'd be out the door and half an nba team down in a divorce lol

I think if 3/4 of the owners vote him out, he's out.

Yep and looks like all of them will so way over the needed 75%.

There may be a legal battle but can't see him dragging this out more, his rep taking worst beating of his life, may end up with death threats. Think he just wants to end it and hide.

Even if they vote him out he would surely have to agree on the sale price if his team, if he wants he could be a stick in the mud and just ask for 100 billion for the team

Under certain grounds only, eg gambling. I'm not convinced that making racist comments in a private conversation constitutes grounds for such a vote to be legal. Sterling has a history of going to court to battle cases where he has no chance of winning so I'd be surprised if he didn't contest the decision.

I'm pretty sure his "asking price" is irrelevant if all of the other owners vote him out. It is a company and if the board votes, you have no control!

True dat. Also dont forget what happened with the Hornets/Pelicans. The NBA just ended up waddling in and taking over.

yeah i read what the grounds were, the main one they could use was something like "conduct unbecoming of a owner" or "conduct detrimental to the game as an owner" or something like that.

the main reason for him to fight would be taxes, he would have to be compensated in some way - not sure what the go is with capital gains over there, maybe @anakinleo knows, but wonder what he would have to pay for gain on sale of the team!

Yup and I know that you are paraphrasing but it is exactly why he would fight any judgement to force him out as an owner; it is too ambiguous a clause which is open to interpretation. As Mark Cuban says, it is a very very very slippery slope to force an owner out based on a private conversation that he had.

The fact that the conversation was in private is completely irrelevant! The fact is that he said it, and now the public knows he said it!

A politician can spend as much time with 'escorts' as they want, but the one time they get found out is the time that they will pay for it! If you choose to make the comments, you are risking the consequences!

I am VERY glad this racist POS is going to be forced out. There is never an excuse for even thinking this sort of thing, let alone saying it.

Yet Cuban sends out a twitter supporting Silver and his decision.

Do you think they have cancelled Sterling's NBA League Pass? :p

Argh, so if a decision wasn't made today, the players were going to pull the pin. Now that would have been interesting.

All I can say is that the NBA has position itself where it is taking a massive financial aim at Sterling, not only through Fining him 2.5m but also valuation of the Clippers team. Prior to that the clippers must be valued almost close to $600m. That value might drop half it's value depending on how nba vs sterling saga continues. This in term affects the wider community such as the other 29 owners who would all have lost value as well. Let's see how this pans out but the faster sterling gets out, the more value gets retained in the team.

Silver's decision was to implement a lifetime ban on Sterling from attending any Clippers related activities and from making any decisions pertaining to the team and to issue a fine. That's all fine and good, but Silver hasn't forced and cannot force the sale of the team, he can only make the recommendation to the Board of Govenors to do so. Cuban supports that decision but not the one on forcing the sale of the team.

Cuban told the Associated Press:

“Again, there’s no excuse for his positions. There’s no excuse for what he said. There’s no excuse for anybody to support racism. There’s no place for it in our league, but there’s a very, very, very slippery slope.”

He said forcing Sterling to sell would be un-American:

“But regardless of your background, regardless of the history they have, if we’re taking something somebody said in their home and we’re trying to turn it into something that leads to you being forced to divest property in any way, shape or form, that’s not the United States of America. I don’t want to be part of that.”

He was not saying that today though! I dont think he wants to be the one owner that voted to keep Sterling in the league.

A 75% vote in favor of him selling by the board of directors forces him that he has to sell it. And she's half Mexican / half African American.

true but for what price? His asking price could be billions if he wants to do it the hard way, and the nba only took over the hornets because they could not find a seller quick enough and the team
Was sending the old owner broke, he should sell, but the fact it was a private convo released by a gold digger trying to extort money might make it very interesting in court, Tim hardaway said some very racists things to and he is still allowed to come to games with no life time ban, going by the past this is going to court, and in the end I think the nba will have to chuck a boatload of money at him just to get rid of him, I don't know why he don't sell, that much money at that age, geez I'd sell and be laying more pipe than all the plumbers in Australia without all the stress lol

Interested parties would enter a bidding process, a long with a number of other business documents. Highest price, as approved by that same board would get ownership. Sterling has little to no say as the value of the organization would be estimated by professionals. A process not too different to that of real estate, except the board of governors accepts not Sterling.
