Welcome to The Show: Hughes goes yard | twinsbaseball.com: News

AUSTRALIAN baseballer Luke Hughes has joined an elite group of batters by belting a home run in his first time at-bat in the Major League Baseball.
The 25-year-old Minnesota Twins third baseman smashed a home run off Detroit Tigers' star Max Scherzer in the third inning.

He became only the fifth Twins player to hit a home run in his first at bat.

But his efforts did not bring the Twins victory, with Detroit winning 11-6.

Hughes is the 28th Australian to play baseball at the highest level.

His promotion means there are now five Aussies playing in the Major Leagues in the US, with Hughes joining Grant Balfour now playing for the Tampa Bay Rays, Peter Moylan with the Atlanta Braves, Ryan Rowland-Smith with the Seattle Mariners and Brad Thomas with the Detroit Tigers.

Hughes put the Twins 3-1 up in the third inning up with his solo shot to the opposite field.

Hughes hit one for four after his promotion last week, making him the 28th Australian to play in the majors.

He also started a double play in the first inning.

"You always dream of it, finally getting up here and making it to the major leagues, but to hit a home run in my first at-bat it was an unbelievable feeling,'' Hughes said.

"It's something that I won't forget - ever.''

Hughes' mother, who was in Perth, watched the home run on the internet.

Adding to the Australian angle in the match, Sydney's Brad Thomas came in to pitch for Detroit in the fourth inning, when the Twins were leading 6-1.

Thomas gained his first win in the majors, giving up two hits and throwing two strikeouts in two and a half innings.

Thomas last played in the major leagues six years ago, when he was with the Twins, and this was his 17th appearance.

The last Australian to make his major league debut, Trent Oeltjen, also hit a home run in his first game last August while playing for Arizona:worthy:
