2012 Football Draft Prospects -PREMIUM AFL JANUARY RELEASE

Matt is correct, you wont be seeing any afl/club logos on the cards.. the players are featured in a special photo shoot guernsey...

Interesting. I have been told before by a friend that worked in AFL licensing that the agreement was not exclusive. I guess to an extent it is if you cant use the logo's. All the best to these guys - i hope they make a go of it. Are any members on here???

Last years release didn't have any AFL branding did it? No Crows players so I didn't collect any, but thought they looked fantastic.

nope.......

^ Is that all select are reffering to :/
Yet again having a set aimed at Vics
that's where their market is. and lets face it, if you talking vfl/afl heritage sets, then of course they will all be vic players. interstate teams have only been in the national comp since 1987, hardly enough time to create 'heritage'

Well don't kid around, just call it what it is. A VFL set. If your adding in AFL with it add in Russel Ebert as that's part of Ports heritage.

Yer but from memory only one or two played AFL. So again just call it VFL and be done with it.
You can't claim heritage and only embrace Vic teams heritage.

Rang Dave today, and as usual had a great chat about the new set and all things football!

Got some info I am sure he wont mind me passing along:

Will be probably 3 cards per pack.
1 pack per box.
Boxes should be about $100 or just under.
Checklist out before Xmas hopefully.
Set to be released late January.
Draft memorabilia cards will contain pieces of the jersey that was worn for the photo shoot. The state guernsey option was explored but the players only get 1! I can confirm this as had a mate who played U18 for SA several years ago and he was only given one guernsey, so no doubt they wouldnt want it cut up to little pieces! Still a very unique jersey.

I am pretty pumped about the release, going to be some really nice low numbered cards and will appeal to a collector like myself who is a passionate South Australian, where I can chase all the SA boys and not worry about what club they are affiliated with because their logo etc won't be plastered all over it.

Bring it on!!

Just to make sure I understand this correctly - there are 3 cards per pack and 1 pack per box. Does this mean that essentially the pack and box are the same thing i.e. you get 3 cards only for approx $100? How many boxes per case? If there were (say) 10 this means you get 30 cards for $1,000? Have I misunderstood?

lol, 3 cards for $100?
so the box thing is just a gimmick then, your paying top dollar for a card that you may not even want?
it's a way to ensure you sell them all and not just the one player everyone will want.

the insignificance of a photo shoot worn guernsey is not even worth talking about.
so it's a footy jumper they designed for the shoot? means nothing, it's not even related to the players team
so why would anyone be interested in an unknown kid in an unknown footy jumper that he will never play in and means nothing to him nor anyone else?

select would be pissing themselves with this news.
this is just producing card of people, not afl cards.

Select actually have their knickers in a knot over this release. They are not happy at all about it.

IMO it will be nice to see a release not full of gem cards:lol::lol:

I can't see why they would be worried about it, it's not gonna affect their product at all.
for a start it's in january, afl cards are dead and buried in january.
selects are released at the start of the season, when the market opens up for the year.

the only issue i can see select having is they can also see that this enterprise is not for the hobby,
it's not about promoting card collecting, it's purely for making a quick buck with little resources put behind the idea.
select have built this hobby up over 20 years, so i can understand when fly by nighters come in and try and capitalise on the fortune that select built, they would be cheesed off for sure.

This will sell out - mark my words.

Tall Poppy Syndrome much?!

Err, the packaging of the product, and its target niche of a high end, low production run release is pretty common place in American sports releases, so your quips on the box 'gimmick' are ignorant footycard. So many people on here buy a box of Select AFL/NFL, rip the product and all they list in the box break is 4-5 cards anyway, the they are left with 200 odd junk commons, and gems that sell for $5 on ebay. This form of release simply does away with the unwanted commons. Dunno about you but as oneil said I'm hardly quivering with excitement at the thought of trying to get another mascot gem this year. And you'll find that a lot of the US releases contain an 'event worn' jersey piece, these kids were (presumably) all drafted by afl teams in the draft, they're hardly going to be unknowns in 6 months time, isnt that the aim? Or wait till July, 4 months into the season before you get a draft pick sig of your new favorite player?

There has never been anything really released in January so will be interesting to see how it goes, but it seems hardly coincidental that Select have released their 'premium' Heritage product, which has been sitting ready to go for a good 18 months, within such a close timeframe as this release. We're all still talking about, buying and trading cards on here a fair bit so I dont know that an offseason is so pronounced nowadays. Time will tell.

If you think Select have built this hobby up over the last 20 years, then your expectations are way too low, theyve stagnated for ten years, happily producing mediocre product that still sells out, so they see no need to go out of their comfort zone and produce something new and exciting in pack form (the cash grab Scanlens Archives series dont count). A monopoly licensing agreement means theyve never had the need to feel threatened.

I'll be buying some of these for sure, but have no desire whatsoever to spend the 2K on the Heritage release just to get two cards from my team.
