Now I' totally perplexed as to why they chose Monday for his AFL debut. This is a kid still in high school, he has an exam the very next day on Tuesday and we are garenteed a big crowd on Queens birthday vs the Pies. Sure he will bost the gate slightly but against a team with less drawing power playing him then would be be better financially for us.

I would of expected him to be on the list of emergencies at least to reward his good work in the VFL. Gee don't want to put any pressure on the kid.

I personally can't wait to see the wonder kid/future captain although we understand he needs time and filling out. Everyone is talking up our kids yet we still have yet to debut Watts and Blease both top 5 picks to go along with Jurrah, MacNamara and Hughes.

Add Butcher and Scully to Watts, Blease, Morton, Cheeny, Bennell, Wonna, Jetta, Frawley, Garland, Martin, Maric....and more..

Future looks bright here in Demon land

lol never heard of most of these guys.
about time they played him anyway, bit rough the day before an exam tho. i wouldnt of said rioli had filled out when they played him in every game last year, and look how he turned out. same with harry taylor for geelong. the dees should of played this guy in round 1 i think. i hear that funny looking guy for the Eagles might be playing this round too, i can say his name but not spell it lol, you know the guy, no2 pick last year. should make it an interesting round really.

He didn't have a full pre season and didn't play till only recently and even then starting in the VFL reserves, seniors and his high school footy team but you wanted him to play round one?

It wasn't about filling out its about his future, his long term future that isn't worth risking.

well arnt melbourne precis, beta wrap him in cotton wool coz he's a number 1 pick. i just think throw the youngsters in the deep end, if their gonna be a star and can actually play then they will come through it just fine, if not beta for it. too many examples of this, dont know where to start. but if he wasnt ready through injury then thats different.

This is modern AFL, not a backwater country footy league. No pre season meant he wasn't ready, whats not to get?

when did i say i didnt get it mate? dont you worry yourself champ, i get it. what i said was if it was injury then thats understandable. but i just think throw them in and they'll be fine. this years prime example, daniel rich.

the kid has ability not question about that... the only question for young players is can they stand up to the rigors of afl footy week in week out... particularly while he's still in school... when the hawks drafted xavier ellis, i dont think they played him at all in the first yr and just let him finish his schooling

there's no right or wrong way to go about it... i reckon the best thing to do is just play them and see what happens, its the best way for them to learn, on the job

Well front page of the herald sun is great exposure for the club to say the least!

And a footy show interview tonight as well. Watts is exactly what this club needs in modern football, a high profile player of the future.

Daniel Rich had been playing in the WAFL for a year or 2 and already had an AFL body. Watts is a 17 year old kid, still in school, and is a Big so hasn't yet filled out. So even if he wasn't injured start of tghe season, why chuck him stright in to a losing team when his future in general is as important if not more than Footy?

Good to see him debut, but I do agree somewhat Chad about the unveiling perhaps not the best time? If nothing else the collingwood feral crowd will be harder to deal with than the rigours of a debut in the AFL! Will be good to see the kid start a hopefully long, prosperous career :D

Jack Watts will get thrown around likes his nothing, i know him personally as i go to brighton and he is a ****er, cockiest bloke you'll meet but i guess you can be cocky when your a afl star, trust me any of us could throw him around, i hope him all the best but unfortunately you'll see his best. he is a strong marker and great kick, but until he builds his strength he wont be able to cope in the afl

hey chadjaja, BLOWN8 has a point about getting them in there soonish like rioli but i understand that he didnt have a full pre season. Even though he was number 1 doesnt mean he is going to be a star he has to get some top level games under his belt. They should have played him at the start of the season and then if he wasntt performing send him back to the twos and then the boy will have some enthusiasum to get back and play AFL footy, making him DESPERATE.

What a week for the footy club! More media attention than we have had in decades and its all good attention!

Lets hope Jack has a long and great career and the kid gets thru todays game alright. I'm not expecting much from him but a hint of what is to come in the future years is sure to come thru at some points. I'm sure the other guys are fired up and will go in hard to protect and show a team effort when the Pies surely target Watts at times. Get in there Brocky, Beamer and Matty!

10 kicks 5 marks and maybe a goal would be a great output today imo.
