The Buy It Nows have all but vanished. The minimum bids have ascended. The final sale prices have multiplied. With that majestic debut performance Thursday night in New England, Kansas City Chiefs do-it-all running back Kareem Hunt ran (and caught) his way right to the top of the 2017 NFL rookie class with a stat line that still boggles the mind three days later: Three touchdowns, 246 yards from scrimmage (148 rushing, 98 receiving) and a starring role in the Chiefs’ 42-27 opening-night upset of the Patriots.
Almost immediately, Hunt’s early season trading cards began feeling the heat. His 2017 Unparalleled Football Blue Laundry Tag Autograph 1/1 closed with a Best Offer price of $595. A pair of his Cracked Ice autographs from 2017 Contenders Draft Picks Football sold for $600. A rare 2017 Origins Football booklet card featuring signatures from Hunt and fellow Chiefs rookie Patrick Mahomes sold for $480.55. Quickly study completed eBay auctions and you’ll find plenty of Hunt trading cards exhibiting similar dramatic, expeditious appreciation.
On August 17, exactly three weeks prior to Hunt’s dynamic debut, one of his 2017 Gold Standard Football autograph memorabilia cards limited to 75 copies sold for just $13. Thursday night, just minutes after Hunt’s history-making performance, one of those cards sold for $162.45, an increase of more than 1,100 percent.
It remans to be seen whether Hunt’s top rookie-year trading cards (and those to come) will be able to maintain these new lofty levels. But this much is certain: More performances like the one he delivered in his NFL debut will make even his most staggering value increases seem paltry by comparison.
