Grading Cards

Sorry for digging around old threads, but there are some interesting reads in the archives.

What ever happened to this idea???

Surely there is enough support with in the Australian card industry to have a reliable card valuation resource like Becketts?!?!?!?!?!?!?

We do have a reliable card valuation source - it is called eBay :)

There might be a market for grading cards, but really need someone with the knowledge, the credibility in the industry, create the plastics for encapsulating the cards and the time and the money to start it all up.

I know some people that tick some of those boxes, but others are just too hard :)

I wouldnt have thought eBay wouldve been a true reflection of value. It relies to much on right place, right time. Im sure ive missed heaps of auctions that i wouldve bid on, but due to either not using the right words to search or just not looking for a week or two i havent found them. Therefore the end sale price is (sometimes greatly) affected. Im sure this could be said in many cases. You only need 2 people really keen to have a MASSIVE difference in the sales outcome.

Am i wrong in what im saying?

Yeah but the saying goes, the card will sell for what it is worth. Over time, you can get the average sales which can be used as a guide for the value of a card.

Much better way to do it then just plucking figures out of the air as seems to be done by some "price guides".

Regardless, this thread is about grading cards (judging the condition of the card) and not valuing them.

Sorry mate, the initial post was talking about grading and its effect on values, so i thought i was staying within the topic. My bad...

yer this is an idea i have been trying to get up for at least a year now.
As i have the time, start up cash and a few decent contacts... the sticking point so far has been the ability to create the plastic holders encapsulating the cards or sourcing them.

I like the idea :) And im sure it would gather a fair whack of support from OCT. As has been mentioned, reputation would be key, but i think that there would be HEAPS of people that would give you a fair go and from there would come the reputation no worries at all! :)

I wouldnt have a clue where to start with regards to holders!? Surely wouldnt be too hard to find a manufacturing company that could knock something out. Most of the expense would come from the initial design and mould. I reckon it would be like embroidery... all the expense is creating the template, but from there its easy.

yer mate, i have been working on this for around 12months now.
But the sticking point has been the holders. No one wants to attempt it. and ive run out of places to go and see for now. but if anyone knows someone who knows someone id be more then happy to sit down and talk with them
