A TEENAGE baseball fan who ran onto the field during a game was Tasered by police, sparking an investigation into the appropriate use of force by officers.
The incident occurred late in the game yesterday at Citizens Bank Park as the Phillies were playing the St. Louis Cardinals.

Steve Consalvi, 17, wearing a red Phillies National League Champions T-shirt and khaki shorts, ran around the outfield waving a white towel and eluding security.

A uniformed police officer fired the Taser at him, taking the boy down face-first, Fox 29's Steve Keeley reported.

Several Phillies players were then filmed hiding their faces in their gloves.

Consalvi was taken to a local hospital but was uninjured.

As the scene played out on the field, it did not play out instantly on live television, which cut away from showing it.

But with 40,000 eyewitnesses and many of them with video phones, it appeared on YouTube shortly afterwards.

Philadelphia police Lieutenant Frank Vanore said the department's Internal Affairs Bureau will examine if this was "proper use of the equipment".

Phillies spokeswoman Bonnie Clark said they will be talking to police to determine whether it was appropriate to Taser the fan.

Consalvi's mother said her son was very sorry about the incident.

Amy Zeigler also apologised to the team for the incident.

Consalvi was charged with criminal trespassing and other offenses.

Tasers will be given an operational trial by Victoria Police in the Morwell and Bendigo regions from July.

They are already being used by some AFP officers and special operations forces in Victoria Police.
