Pretty big news....
UP to six AFL identities could soon be charged over a vicious brawl that involved Fraser Gehrig.

Brownlow medallists Simon Black and Michael Voss are also sweating on the police investigation.

Detectives will decide who will face court after they complete a review of evidence against the group, which includes current and former football stars.

Police have confirmed some AFL figures are likely to be charged with assault.

The police action stems from a violent late-night clash at St Kilda's Prince of Wales Hotel on September 29 last year -- Grand Final eve.

The fight, which erupted around university student Jaclyn Cameron, left one man unconscious.

Witnesses have told the Sunday Herald Sun that a group of about eight, mostly footballers, fought with Ms Cameron, her boyfriend, Jarrod Rouse, and another man.

The Office of Public Prosecutions this week examined seven briefs of evidence.

The affair is another blow to the AFL in a year dominated by off-field scandal, including drug abuse allegations at the West Coast Eagles.

St Kilda spearhead Gehrig, Black and Voss, Lions assistant coach Craig Lambert, Richmond development coach Craig McRae and former St Kilda bad boy Steve Lawrence are among those investigated by police.

A group of past and present AFL players had gathered at Sapore restaurant earlier that day. Some partied on at the St Kilda hotel.

Ms Cameron would not comment this week, but at the time Mr Rouse said the fight started after lewd comments and gestures to her.

"They were being sleazy," Mr Rouse, 27, said. "We all said we didn't want any trouble."

He asserted Lawrence made threatening gestures with a pool cue.

Then, Mr Rouse said, Ms Cameron pushed the cue back at Lawrence and then the brawl escalated.

Witness Eddy Le Gallant was on an end-of-season trip with teammates from South Australia's Uraidla Football Club.

"All of a sudden I saw McRae getting punched by this guy," Mr Le Gallant told the Sunday Herald Sun.

"Then I saw Michael Voss tackle this guy on the ground," Mr Le Gallant said.

"When the guy was on the ground, Simon Black went in there and was kicking him."

It is understood Black denied he kicked the man. Video footage does not show it.

Mr Le Gallant made a statement to police. He said Gehrig was a key figure in the fight.

"Fraser Gehrig was punching the guy on the ground," he said. "It was pretty much eight on three."

Swans Jared Crouch, Matthew Nicks and retired ruckman Jason Ball were also at the hotel, Mr Le Gallant said.

Another witness, Luke Boyle, said Gehrig and McRae were the main footballers involved in the fracas.

"There was a few words said between the players and a couple of guys playing pool, then a scuffle started," he said. "It was pretty nasty."

"It happened quickly -- 30 seconds, then it was over.

"Afterwards, the scene was pretty nasty. I think there was one guy unconscious."

Another SA witness, Dylan Brown, said: "There was quite a few punches thrown. It just got out of control."

Brisbane criminal lawyer Michael Bosscher, representing Voss, Black, McCrae and Lambert, said his clients denied any wrongdoing.

Det. Sen-Sgt Phil Hubbard, of St Kilda police, said he expected decisions to be made late this week on who would be charged.

Gehrig's manager, Alex McDonald, did not return the Sunday Herald Sun's calls.
