Well we just had a bit of a box breaking session here with one of our newer members "Tubby" (aka Paul) and his GF (aka Adrianna or Good luck charm!!)

They opened 3 blaster boxes of the 2006 Topps series 1 MLB in the hope of pulling an Alex Gordon RC.

For those that don't know the Alex Gordon story here it is -

The story broke that the Alex Gordon RC had been inserted by mistake only into boxes being sold by WALMART. Under the terms of an agreement with the Major League Players' Association, Topps does not have permission to issue a card of any player who has not played in the major leagues. Gordon, who signed with the Royals in late September 2005, didn't play his first professional game until last month.

But when Topps issued its 2006 set earlier this year, there was Gordon —# 297 — decked out in a Royals uniform. When Topps noticed the error, the company withdrew the card from production.
That didn't prevent some number of Gordon cards (Topps isn't saying how many) from slipping out via early shipments of boxed sets to Wal-Mart stores. Collectors have been mining Wal-Mart inventories ever since for Gordon cards easily convertible to cash on eBay. It's all about supply and demand. A collector who wants a complete set of 2006 cards either can get lucky or lay down some cash. How much cash? Alex Gordon RC's have sold for as much as US$7,500 on Ebay. Hobby boxes feature cut-out versions of the card that sell for US$100-250."

These boxes were on the shelves at the same time as the black ones and are not the restocked boxes, so there is the chance that the Walmart exclusive Alex Gordon Rookie Card is in these packs. (One of our customers has pulled one so far!!)

Well it would appear that the cut-out versions were not just placed in Hobby boxes as Paul's GF pulled one out of the first box they broke. (See scan below) These have been selling from US$26-43 on Ebay recently ...but the only one listed at the moment is $179.99!!!

Great fun and nice cards as well!!

Thats probably one the best PR excercises Topps could have come up with.

yeah, and the Derek Jeter card with Mickey Mantle and George W Bush on it was a masterpiece.

I think they should do that more often.

I have the Leon Washington (NY JETS) signed rookie where he looks like he is giving the finger with both hands. I was glad to snap that baby up.
