Your team for the third Test

I don't think Glenn Maxwell even knows what sort of batsman he is to be honest. It's strange, because he has played some very responsible innings for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield but I just think he doesn't possess the game or mentality for Test cricket. I think it would devalue the format if he was selected on the hope that he might "come off" - particularly as Steve Smith has publicly demanded fight and resolve from his players.

Pakistan I think will be easy pickings on Australian pitches, that's why I have plumped for the three young blokes in the batting order. That said, Shaun Marsh will return from injury for that series, which is why I'm keen for young Hughes to get a look at Test cricket now.

Thought the VIC/NSW match would give someone a chance to stand out as a spinner but hasn't.
Match figures are currently
Lyon 0/173
O'Keefe 3/113
Smith 1/50
Maddinson 0/6
Holland 2/71
Maxwell 0/23

None have done anything with the bat either Maxwell 10 & 3 and O'Keefe 12no were the only ones to get to double figures
NSW are chasing 351 today for victory, Hughes and Patterson were the only NSW batsmen to get runs in the first innings, a 100 by either today would push their case. Holland & Maxwell have another chance with the ball and if NSW decide to chase the runs it could make taking wickets a little easier.

My team would be:
Warner
Renshaw
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb
Patterson
Nevill
Agar/Zampa
Starc
Hazlewood
Bird

They're saying Wade will replace Nevill, I'd rather have Wade as a batsman and Nevill as the keeper. They think Matt Renshaw will make the squad? If he does then that is terrible selecting, that's as bad as an arm chair selector! He's only got 11 first class matches experience, and now that he's scored a century when Australia are looking to rebuild, he's suddenly a test squad member?! Next to no one had heard of this kid until now! I don't mind Patterson and Handscomb, but I would like to see Chadd Sayers get the nod over Jackson Bird.

I think it would be unfortunate to select Matthew Wade as a Test wicketkeeper. There is a Test tour to India early next year and unless he has dramatically improved his work up to the stumps since his last Test appearances, it is flirting with potential catastrophe. This (probably) young team will need to take every opportunity in the field against the Indians.

I'd be sticking with in the incumbent and asking the top six to stop leaving Peter Nevill with a mountain to climb every bloody time he comes to the crease!

The one thing I can guarantee is that regardless of who is included in the squad this afternoon, we will be debating it for the whole of next week :)

If handcombe doesn't make it then there's serious problems with the selectors? Not just this weekend but he's always scoring runs over the last few years

Peter Lalor is suggesting that Renshaw, Maddinson and Wade will be named in the squad this afternoon and that Handscomb is locked in. Three hours away from the announcement........

Maddinson? Hmm, not sure I'd like that selection if it does eventuate.

This is my team
Warner (c)
Bancroft
Khawaja
Smith
Ferguson
Patterson
Handscomb
Starc
Hazlewood
Zampa
Behrendorff
Assuming Handscomb would keep? Personally I'd prefer to play him as a batsman for the moment; taking the gloves is just an extra thing to worry about when he should be focussing on his batting.

I did say I thought he was there abouts, averages the same as Handscomb at first class level, can roll the arm over but well short of being all rounder.
Maybe if they went in without a spinner he Smith and Warner could fill the role, I did notice Smith gave him a few overs in the shield game and didn't bowl Warner.
I would be happy enough to see Handscomb picked as keeper but as a specialist batsman think Patterson should get the nod.

Stolen from fb page:

FIVE CHANGES !

Here is Australia's squad for the third and final Test, to be played against South Africa in Adelaide !

David Warner
Matt Renshaw (debut)
Usman Khawaja
Steve Smith (c)
Peter Handscomb (debut)
Nic Maddinson (debut)
Matthew Wade
Mitchell Starc
Josh Hazlewood
Jackson Bird
Chadd Sayers
Nathan Lyon

The changes mean that Joe Burns, Adam Voges, Callum Ferguson, Peter Nevill and Joe Mennie ALL lose their spot from the Australian side that suffered an innings defeat to the Proteas in Hobart last week.

I'm speechless and disgusted by this. If this pans out the way I'm envisioning, the whole section panel should get the sack. I would write what I really think but I don't have the time nor the 4G data to write what I would.

Really feel for Ferguson and Mennie. Missing a home test after only one crack at it.

Mennie didn't owl that many overs and for the selection panel to rest him from the shield game, only then to drop him for his team mate! Really! I would be really p$&@d off if I was him.

To only give Ferguson one game is poor IMO. The whole team were disgraceful. In Hobart, and who knows how many SA would have made had they had to bat day one..

Matt Renshaw! Good luck to the bloke, however what about all those guys that toiled away for years without getting a sniff. Scoring thousands and thousands of runs in a shield comp that regularly had all test players in them. No resting bowlers back then. Players like Stuart Law, Martin Love, Brad Hodge, and others like Paul Nobes, James Brayshaw, Jimmy Maher etc etc.

Anyway, good luck to them all. Well done Nic Maddinson, I thought he was close to getting picked, very happy for him, just should not be at Callum Ferguson's expense.

I agree on the Mennie and Ferg statement, I think they've unfairly copped some individual blame over the performance.

I disagree with Renshaw being picked, a 20 year old with 11 games worth of experience. I like taking a punt but not one that could see the player's confidence shattered after 1 game at the highest level.

Maddinson is too inconsistent for me.

I'm hoping for Sayers to get the nod over Bird, purely from a South Aussie point of view.

My take on the squad:

Renshaw: happy enough. Only going to play one Test so why not give him a taste of Test cricket?

Handscomb: obvious selection.

Maddinson: would've thought there were several ahead of him in the pecking order. Not convinced at all.

Wade: tight call. Will want to be right on his game. If Nevill and/or Whiteman start dominating with the bat in the Shield, he'll be under pressure straight away due to his glovework not seen as being as good as that of the other two.

Bird & Sayers: fair enough. Probably lean towards Sayers due to home ground knowledge.

Lyon: quite possibly his last chance. A good game from O'Keefe or Agar in the next round of the Shield and another poor game from Lyon may well see him dropped.
