When Dallas-area collector Craig Nelson first pulled the redemption card from his box of 2011 National Treasures Football Tuesday at SMP Sports Cards in Grapevine, Texas, he breathed a frustrating sigh and tossed it on the counter toward store manager Chad Brooks.
Brooks picked it up, read it and immediately went nuts. This was no ordinary redemption card. It was card #0, one of the five randomly inserted into the product that earned the holder one of the world’s longest trading cards.
Brooks was on the phone with Panini America officials Wednesday morning, asking if he could bring Nelson — a physical education teacher in the area — by the office to pick up his treasure. While we typically don’t allow in-person redemptions, we made a special exception in this case.
As a result, Nelson played hooky on Thursday afternoon and became the first collector in the world to take possession of the world’s longest trading card.
