For the myriad National Baseball Hall of Fame members permeating the checklist for Panini America’s upcoming 2012 Cooperstown Baseball, there is one insert set in particular that pays tribute not so much to the greatest players in baseball history, but to the memorabilia they wielded while achieving that greatness.
The poignant Famous Moments insert provides fans and collectors with something of a 20-card stroll through the hallowed halls of Cooperstown, in the process bringing to life some of the most memorable pieces of memorabilia on display in the museum.
Some of the prominent artifacts featured in Famous Moments: A baseball hurled by Cy Young during the first modern World Series in 1903. The batting helmet worn by Bill Mazeroski when he belted the “shot heard ’round the world” in the 1960 World Series. A baseball used by Nolan Ryan during his seventh career no-hitter in 1991. The baseball Mickey Mantle hit 565 feet in 1953. A fielding glove worn by Jackie Robinson. The bat Tony Gwynn used to record his 3,000th career hit in 1999.
There are plenty more — and you can get your first look at all 20 Famous Moments in the revealing gallery that follows. Enjoy, and stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for additional details on 2012 Cooperstown Baseball.
