Judd early pick for Brownlow Medal
18 December 2007 Herald Sun
Jon Ralph

RECENT groin surgery and a move to an underperforming club have not stopped Carlton recruit Chris Judd being installed as next season's Brownlow Medal favourite.

Judd will be the $10 favourite when TAB Sportsbet's markets open today, ahead of Geelong premiership star Gary Ablett ($12).

Judd is unlikely to take part in the early rounds of the NAB Cup following groin-release surgery, after joining a team that has finished in the bottom two in five of the past six years.

However TAB Sportsbet's Gary Davies said yesterday the 2004 Brownlow medallist's vote-polling ability could not be ignored.

"He was $8 when we opened last year and is $10 this year, so he is not as short, with the combination of uncertainty over his operation and us not expecting Carlton to win as many games," Davies said.

"But he is such a classy player and Carlton will have a pretty good midfield, so you can see them getting away with eight or nine wins this year.

"That price is based on his groin being OK, but if it showed early that it wasn't right, he would quickly be turned out."

While punters wage plenty of money in the weeks leading into the Brownlow Medal, there is value to be had with long-range predictions.

This year's Brownlow medallist Jimmy Bartel, who will open at $21, started last season at $301.

Davies said he expected Hawk Lance Franklin, who will start at $35, to be an instant hit with punters.

Brisbane Lions forward Jonathan Brown is equal third favourite at $13 with Daniel Kerr, but Davies said the Eagle was a risky proposition.

"He won't have (Ben) Cousins and Judd taking votes off him, but he will find it tougher without them," Davies said. "That was the quandary, and his record of getting reported wasn't that good. Punters will have to take Kerr with a grain of salt."

Carlton's No. 1 draft pick Matthew Kreuzer will start at $501.

I hope they don't !!!

MattyJ - You'll be happy to know that i have STOPPED betting on the Saints for this season so the Richo Jinx has been removed....I have bet on Geelong Collingwood & Port instead :) Hope the Richo Jinx continues :D

PS - Best value bet is Chad Cornes & $41 for the Brownlow :)

I haven't made any brownlow bets yet but if he is at those odds when I do then he will be one of the $1 bets I make :D

There-by handing him the Richo curse?

Cornes at those odds are my fav too, and I'm not a betting man!

I agree with Matty, hard to win a brownlow on a team that can't win 5 games :p

Well I bet on 5 players......
Chad Cornes (34 -1)
Matthew Pavlich (19-1)
Adam Goodes (17-1)
Brock McLean (67-1 My Roughie ;))
Luke Ball (Sorry Matty but I got 100-1 on him :))

Can anyone explain why Luke Ball would be at such long odds ? Is he injured ?

McLean won't play enough games to get there IMO as a big Melbourne supporter. He's often injured and the games he does play he's terribly patchy. Safer bet would have ben Nathan Jones. This kid is a beast!

Isn't Ball still struggling with the injuries from last season?

Luke Ball has been suffering from Osteitus Pubis (sp?) for the last few seasons + hes not the sort of player i can ever see winning a brownlow...Dal Santo is the most likely saint to win it, even last year with a crappy year he finished like 6th or something

Martin Clarke of Collingwood is a great chance to win the Brownlow at good Odds of 300/1. Forget about Judd for the Brownlow, Marty Clarke is the new Judd. Marty Clarke ticks all the right boxes for a Brownlow Medalist; he has elite fitness, he has great skills, his disposal is excellent, he is in a winning team, and most importantly he never bad mouths the umpires. Also, Marty Clarke's best performance for the Magpies was in the Prelim Final against Geelong, which proves he is a big game performer. He will improve even further with another pre-season under his belt and he should be ready to take his game to the next level in 2008. I'll be backing Clarke at the 300/1 odds that TAB Sportsbet is currently offering. Don't forget Jimmy Bartel started at odds of 300/1 before last season. A $50.00 investment on Clarke for the Brownlow will return $15,000.00 so it is definately a risk worth taking. Hopefully he has the luck of the irish on his side in 2008.

Geelong deserve to be Flag favourites with the list they have, but i'll be backing Collingwood for the Flag at good odds of 10/1. The only other teams that i could possibly see challenging the Pies and Cats for the Flag in 2008 are Hawthorn (10/1) and StKilda (12/1). The Hawks are a team on the rise, and StKilda still has a very talented list, so if they can just have some luck with injuries they could be a chance. I can't see any of the other teams winning the Flag, but i think that Richmond will be the big improvers in 2008 and they could be a chance of sneaking into the finals. I liked the way the Tigers finished the year in 2007, and the Tigers are currently paying $4.00 at TAB Sportsbet to finish in the Top 8.

Collingwood Homerism at its best...He's 300/1 for a reason, that reason, he will NOT win the Brownlow

Luke Ball isn't that good, he is forever injured.

Chad Cornes will not win a Brownlow, he argues with the umpires too much, just like Wayne Carey.

I agree with your thoughts on Chad Cornes (Arguing with umpires) but @ 34-1 it was worth a $1 bet :)

Although Clarke is no chance I guess it's worth a $1 bet too :)
I put $1 on Dane Swan last year at 200-1 and wasn't that far of a win ;)

Bartel is/was a better player than Martin Clarke...Marty Clarke will be good dont get me wrong, but he will not win the brownlow this year
