X-Box Questions!

Hey guys!

Excuse my ignorance on this subject but I have not owned a gaming console since the Playstation I :lol:

My Mother-In-Law has just bought (lay-bye) my daughter an X-Box for Christmas (with some sort of dancing game) but what I want to know is:

1. What else the X-Box can do?
2. Is the latest one backwards compatible with older X-Box games and
3. When buying X-Box games from overseas (ie Thialand / Phuket) do I need to have the X-Box converted to play these games or will they all work OK?

Hope someone here with more knowledge on X-Boxes can help :)

Non-game features:
- Play DVDS
- Video media files such as AVI, MP4 (all depends how they been encoded i.e. profiles used and resolution - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945416?sd=xbox)
- Audio media.
- I knwo some peopel use to get foxtel/austar type servicesstreamed through their xbox, however it costs money obviously.

Game featuers:
- XBOX LIVE (silver = free, which gets to access to marketblace / gold = monthly paid service, which is required to play online).

Yes it is but obviously their will be compadibilty issues with some games asit emulates. Usually they added more game support with each firmware updated (haven't really kept up with it myself).


3.
YES AND NO. 360 is region locked. Some games are also region locked so they will not work. (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-00-3-xbox360_compatibility_guide-49-en.html)

THe good part about the console being out so long is that most the good xbox360 games are litrally under $50 now anyway.
 
Backwards compatibility hasn't been updated since 2007 as they were essentially having to write software for each game, and Live stats showed not enough people were playing them to make it worth the effort.

Also, the Live service for XBOX games was stopped in 2010, so even if you have a supported game it wont work online (unless you're able to access a private server or LAN)

ah yes, Totally forgot about old xbox games live service support is off.

I know PS3 (not sure about 360) has started shutting down servers for some of the launch titles.
 
Alot of the older original games are getting re-hashed for XBLA in HD, as well as being able to buy some of the older original games on the Marketplace.

IMO, if games were released on ALL consoles, rather than exclusively to certain ones (Xbox only or Sony only), then I'd have money on the 360 being the best console out. If you're into gaming online, the Microsoft Servers are fare superior than the Sony ones, IMO.

Xbox DOES need a Blu-Ray player though, that's a no brainer.
 
Thanks guys....I am still unsure about the backwards compatability though.....i got two different answers here.

Am I able to buy the original X-Box games and play them on the new X-Box or can I only buy the new games?

You can play some of the xbox games, but the support is limited as each needed software to be written for it to emulate correctly.

What Scotty was saying is xbox games (assuming the emulation supports them) that are online can't be played online because their online servers are off, so you won't be able to connect to anything. e.g halo 1. could play the single player campaign, but not online unless a private server is available.

Nah what I was saying, is that some of the older original Xbox titles are being re-hashed (re-released) for XBLA in HD. ie. Tony Hawks Pro Skater (is actually a PlayStation title), but others are available on Games On Demand, which is where you buy games online, but there's still no guarantee, as Dom said, that the online servers would be available.

To be honest with ya Richo, and you might be different, but I've got about maybe 20 original games in boxes, that havent been touched since their moment of shine on the original Xbox. I'm only playing X360 titles these days, or new XBLA releases (ala Tony Hawks, etc).

A lot of original titles will still work in the new consoles (unlike PS3s, lol), but you will only have access to single player or no online game modes.
 
Thanks again guys.....I was maily asking because I can get X-Box games for $3 from Cash Converters and wondered if they would play on the new console!
 
Only other thing to look out for with original XBOX games, is how you hook your 360 up. I have mine plugged into a LCD monitor with the VGA cable and Forza 1 won't work because of this.
