The Last Dance thread - spoilers and discussion

great series. ESPN 30 for 30 have been just amazing.

episode 1 - i would take babe ruth off the list and say MJ and ali were the only two athletes to hit the global market on such a massive level.
episode 2 - whether he's under-rated or not (he is), pippen was definitely under-appreciated...6th for the bulls in salary?!?! "whenever they speak michael jordan, they should speak scottie pippen" [michael jordan 2019].
episode 3 - the '86 celtics, the bad boys, the 90s bulls. how could anyone not prefer that era of basketball?
episode 4 - agreed, carmen electra still looks goood. and jerry krause really deserves more respect.

after episode 4's look at phil jackson the series loses the player-centric episode style and starts looking at a specific series instead.
episode 5 - episode is in memory of kobe. gets into MJs last all-star game, air jordans and his farewell to madison square garden. highlights of the first repeat vs portland and a look into the dream team. "republicans buy sneakers too." [michael jordan 1990]
episode 6 - focusing on MJs gambling. the '93 EC final vs the knicks and three-peat vs the suns are highlighted while the media are portrayed kinder than they were.
episode 7 - james jordan's (father) influence/death and the bulls' time without MJ. nice insight into the hard attitude he took towards his team-mates.
episode 8 - "he's back". the series loss vs orlando and dealing with the rebuilt team with the 72-10 season. finals vs seattle without his dad. would love to see more of those spacejam pick-up games.

notable new interviewees: toni kukoc, steve kerr, larry bird, gary payton, reggie miller, charles barkely, pat riley, bob costas.

Just finished episodes 5 & 6. Don’t get me wrong this is amazing and some great insights but they have covered only a few of games from the entire regular season. MJ back in New York and the Atlanta game. A little bit early re the struggle but nothing about Pippen returning to the lineup. I want to see the set plays, how they try to stop the best players from the other team, Jordan abusing his teammates in practice, insights from the huddle etc. How the Bulls got here is a seperate 10 part series.

best 30 for 30s:
jordan rides the bus - jordan's time in the minors.
one night in vegas - tyson vs sheldon and biggie gets shot.
once brothers - amazing story of petrovic and divac and their tense relationship after the split of yugoslavia.
four days in october - the greatest comeback in MLB history.
the U - universtiy of miami during the 80s and the way they helped shape future NFL players.
winning time - reggie miller vs spike lee 1994-1995.
june 17, 1994 - OJs on the run, and these are the events that were interrupted...
the two escobars - pablo and andres and the 1994 world cup.
run ricky, run - ricky williams' strange career and his leaving the NFL to go walkabout.
the fab five - self explanatory.
catching hell - poor steve bartman and the infamous 'catch' that stopped the cubs dead.
the real rocky - chuck wepner and how he inspired sly to write rocky.
roll tide/war eagle - one of the biggest rivalries in US sports: auburn U vs U of alabama football.
the announcement - magic retiring.
you dont know bo - bo jackson. the man, the myth, the legend.
elway to marino - nice look at an NFL draft.
no mas' - rivalry between sugar ray and roberto duran and trying to find closure today.
bad boys - one of the best and most controversial championship teams in NBA history.
the '85 bears - self explanatory.
believeland - the cleveland curse. includes the drive, the fumble, the shot, the catch.
tommy - the rise and fall of tommy gunn. great HW boxer who died of AIDS while believing AIDS was a conspiracy.
celtics/lakers best of enemies - looking into the rivalry. mainly the bird vs magic years.
deions double play - deion sanders. great athlete. brilliant achievement.
vick - michael vick bio.
OJ: made in america - really good 5 part series.

some of that is coming up, like MJ's treatment of team-mates and pippen's return, but they dont really get into tactics.

New podcast starting soon by Jack McCallum called The Dream Team Tapes.

Of particular interest here where he apparently has MJ on tape saying he told Rod Thorn (while assembling the 92 Dream Team) that if Isiah Thomas was playing, he would not. Differs from the Last Dance where MJ said he didn’t mention the name to Thorn at the time. Not surprising though since Jordan may have some editorial control over this Netflix series of course.

Jordan's new Agent Estee Portnoy is one of the executive producers on The Last Dance....... allows some control of the story line.

My gut feel is that he would only take part in this if a lot of the bad stuff was not mentioned (some is still shown but spun into he did it because he wanted to win) and it was also an opportunity to remind some of the younger audience how good he really was........and how good his Nike shoes were!

John Stockton reluctantly agreed to be interviewed as he viewed this doco as nothing more than a Michael Jordan Puff Piece.

In saying this, im loving it so far and bring on the last 4 episodes!

the laettner episode is great...
I rewatched the "WITHOUT BIAS" episode last week, the nba related story on Len bias, taken by boston at pick 2 in the draft, before tragically loosing his life celebrating his achievement.. great/ sad and reflective episode..
