NBL Introduces Marquee Player Rule

The NBL will usher in a major change to the club recruitment process for the 2014/15 season with the introduction of a Marquee Player rule.

As part of the NBL’s push to strengthen its on-court product, each team will be able to nominate one Marquee Player on its active roster.

Clubs will be entitled to pay its Marquee Player any amount, which may take them above the current $1 million salary cap. A 25% Marquee Player levy will be applied to any payment made above the salary cap.

NBL Chief Executive Fraser Neill said the Marquee Player rule was an important development designed to attract high-calibre imports or offer financial incentive for local stars considering overseas opportunities.

“The NBL offers so much to players. This is a great league and Australia provides an excellent lifestyle. The Marquee Player rule now provides further financial options for clubs as they head into the player market to fill their roster,” Mr Neill said.

“But equally we have some brilliant, currently contracted local players who are in the sights of overseas clubs. We don’t want to stand in the way of their hopes and dreams on the court but if the only consideration for them is money, the Marquee Player rule may now help the NBL retain their services.”

The NBL has decided to put on hold its plans to stage an off-season tournament in Las Vegas later this year. This follows a review of the progress to date, which raised concerns over the event achieving its key goals.

The summer project remains an interesting opportunity for the NBL but it is considered one that is best explored at a later date.

I agree mate, but I am glad they chose to delay it, rather than going in half hearted and ending up with something resembling the High Stakes Hoops tournament.
