It’s great seeing posts like this. As a child of the 80s, chewing bubblegum and trading cards to make full sets of rugby league, cricket and movie cards was one of life’s simple joys and major accomplishments.
I look back fondly on those times and I was lucky, I never stopped collecting. 1982 rugby league were my first cards and I haven’t stopped since. Still prefer common cards and low end chase sets and if I bust a sig, just happy with whoever it is these days. It’s fun flipping through folders too. My oldest turns 15 this year. His first set was the 2012 Daily Tele binder set. We got nostalgic the other day, talking about the players of that era and games he remembered from that time. He’s been lucky that’s he’s been going to 12-15 nrl games a year since 2010, so even in his life, he’s gone to a lot of footy. Having sets of cards made it fun too.
1988 was my first year, pink cards the rounded corners for the first time. This was the first year with a subset as well but unfortunately all of cards from this period including all of my movie / non-sport cards (Batman, TMNT e.tc) were left at home when I moved out and were later thrown out aside from a couple of folders of inserts I took with me.It’s great seeing posts like this. I have started trying to put together a set of 88 again in mint condition for nostalgic purposes, it is hard to find them in good condition!
I had a look at your want list but have nothing you need. My spares are mostly a mix of low end and numbered inserts. If you need any of those, let me know.I have 2 near mint sets of 1988 but not selling, plus pink cards what Einstein got paid for that decision lol.but I’m working on a third set and have a few swaps in fairly good n near mint also check my nrl cards wanted post n maybe we could trade some 88 cards if you have any similar condition cards.

Had the 1983-85 sticker sets. Books long gone though, which is odd as I still have the cricket ones and cards. Sticker books were always so much fun to collect. Always on the look out for 1985 Souths stickers to finish off my unpeeled set.My complete 1983 sticker album and complete 1983 unpeeled sticker set. Both very hard to photo.
Nice story. I was wondering what your age might be as it sounded close to mine with throwing cards against a wall etc. I was going to ask but didn't need to when I read the bit about being born when the league expanded.Hi, just thought would start a anything chat about collecting cards any thoughts, tips, crazy ideas anything welcome here.
I have been collecting since kid at school I guess without really knowing it, just loved trading at school playing closet to wall wins all cards, flights see who could fly there card furthest again winner takes all, tips throw cards till someone’s lands on top of other and win all cards. Keeping your swaps pile seperate from your flick cards. Was awesome that was primary school and early high school, that’ was late 70s early 80s for me. Once at high school we also played closet to wall but the cards turned into 20 cent pieces, a couple of wins and was good day at tuck shop lol. Plus more money to buy more cards haha.
stopped collecting when left school work world took over, anyway blah, blah, blah, down the road like 30years later did 16 years army got medical discharge now retired so started collecting again last 7 years playing catch-up lol. But have done quite well happy with collection I have of rugby league and non sport also folders/sets etc. I have resolved myself to not getting some chase cards as prices are just insane and have postponed chasing them, I still look bargains do come up now and again, but completing sets, finding upgrade cards etc is more satisfying I find at moment.
being a kid in 80s the football was awesome dragons actually had some really good players and we did good, I remember going to mid week comp amco, pananasic, etc etc cup games was awesome my mate mad broncos supporter we used to beat a jersey every time dragons played broncos hence to say during 90s I had to buy him a couple from grand finals. But each time we will buy other team jerseys not just our team, I have a sharks, penrith, I was actually born at Nepean hospital year they joined comp so yes I should go for them but no dragons, do have soft spot for them as u would.
but collecting cards brings great memories home, and I really enjoy looking through folders at cards, guess us collectors are a crazy breed, lol.
anyway could go forever, would love anybody’s thoughts, etc, why, how when anything about trading that I might not know,
cheers. Craig.
Very nice loved ur Sunday walk lol. Long walk no bike I’m guessing but yes was saving every cent possible to buy cards, wish I kept all those wax wrappers also that went in bin crazy. I haven’t been bothered to collect the stickers (83, 84 n 85) just me I like cards but sticker collections do look awesome, just hard like everything in condition items. N yes buying cigs was no problem as kid, I used to buy my grandad his tobacco n tallyho papers n was always extra he said I could have, he knew the price was just cool looking back now, god bless him. I’m gunna be the best one when my son has kids also.Had the 1983-85 sticker sets. Books long gone though, which is odd as I still have the cricket ones and cards. Movie cards were great. Return of the Jedi 1983 and Batman 1989 were sets I adored as a kid.
Mate I’m 56 young lol. Yes that’s right born when Penrith entered comp in 1967.Nice story. I was wondering what your age might be as it sounded close to mine with throwing cards against a wall etc. I was going to ask but didn't need to when I read the bit about being born when the league expanded.
I thought I might be the oldest on here but you have me covered.I have a lot of nostalgia for those days. Different city, different state, different sport, but still similar in many ways. Life was so much simpler back then.
