Breaking news

The WDXI board has launched an investigation into the wookiedragon XI after suspicions were raised after giving up a first innings lead of 143 runs and then failing to bowl the opposition out on day five on a turning pitch conceding and almost world record 386 runs in the fourth innings.
There's been some interesting fourth-innings scorecards so far! Must say I was surprised to see we chased that down given some of the small targets that haven't been chased.

Round 4, Match 13

Keatoboy v Scotty_WCE

Keatoboy won the toss but surprisingly elected to bowl first, and 154 overs later it was looking like a horrific decision. His bowlers couldn't contain Scotty_WCE's batsmen, who piled on the runs. Viv Richards hit 148, Gavaskar 84 and Dravid 71 on the way to a big total of 499. Dale Steyn, with 3/68, had the most respectable bowling figures.

But it was more of the same in Keatoboy's first innings, with runs flowing and wickets hard to come by. Bradman finally got his first ton of the tournament, Ian Botham scored 79, and then the tail wagged with last two Sydney Barnes and Murali scoring 70 valuable runs between them. This meant Scotty_WCE's lead was the slimmest possible; just one run.

There was limited time left in the game after two big innings, and a result was looking unlikely. Despite Gavaskar and Richards both falling for 1, Border's 83 and Sobers' 51 enabled Scotty_WCE to set Keatoboy a target of 279 off 68 overs.

It would require a good run-rate but despite having wickets in hand Keatoboy's batsmen seemed satisfied with a draw. Kohli was dimissed just two runs short of another century, and Botham blocked his way to 78 off 163 balls as Scotty_WCE's team had their third draw in four games, while it was Keatoboy's first.

Keatoboy 498 (Bradman 122, Botham 79, Pollock 3/88) & 4/241 (Kohli 98, Botham 78*) drew Scotty_WCE 499 (Richards 148, Gavaskar 84, Steyn 3/68) & 7d/277 (Border 83, Sobers 51).

Round 4, Match 14

May-Z v Matty76

May-Z's captain would have been very happy at 1/192 after winning the toss and choosing to bat. Geoff Boycott made a ton and put on 155 with George Headley (88). But after those two were both dismissed by Matty76's Jacques Kallis, Ray Lindwall and Richard Hadlee took care of the rest, each taking four wickets in limiting May-Z to a solid first-innings of 346.

Unfortunately Matty76's batsmen weren't up for the challenge in response, with Graeme Pollock's 33 the highest score on a dismal batting card. Fred Trueman and George Lohmann were to thank for the carnage, between them wiping out all of Matty76's top six batsmen as they made just 121.

This gave May-Z the option of enforcing the follow-on, which they did. This must have spurred Matty76's men on as they avoided embarrassment by posting a much stronger score of 407 in their second innings. Pollock top-scored again with a fine 136; he shared a 216-run partnership with Kallis (108). Fred Trueman bowled well again to claim six more wickets, as May-Z faced a 183-run chase for victory.

If there was ever any doubt about the result, openers Trumper (75) and Boycott (72) laid them to rest by putting on 162 for the first wicket. They fell close together but Headley and Weekes sealed a comfortable eight-wicket win.

May-Z 346 (Boycott 101, Headley 88, Lindwall 4/88, Hadlee 4/97) & 2/183 (Trumper 75, Boycott 72) defeated Matty76 121 (Trueman 3/17, Lohmann 3/33) & 407 (Pollock 136, Kallis 108, Trueman 6/92) by eight wickets.

Round 4, Match 15

Keatoboy v BLOWN8

BLOWN8 batted first and despite the openers falling early, Sachin Tendulkar compiled a good innings of 76. That was then complemented by countryman Kapil Dev's 82, as they helped their team to a score of 266. South Africans Steyn and Donald took seven wickets between them for Keatoboy.

Keatoboy's first innings was quite similar, with two good contributions surrounded by a few starts but not much else of substance. Bradman's 65 and Voges' 51 were the only scores of note, and this meant Keatoboy surrendered a 34-run lead on the first innings after a total of 232. BLOWN8's men had Waqar Younis to thank for this, who blasted through the line-up to finish with the superb figures of 7/64.

BLOWN8's openers fared even worse in the second innings; both fell for ducks (with Graeme Smith completing a pair) and this time not even Tendulkar could save them. He fell for just 6, before Steve Waugh fought back by making 67. Keeper Mark Boucher made a valuable 55 as a total of 230 meant Keatoboy would be chasing 265.

Two significant partnerships that were surrounded by clusters of wickets - Keatoboy slipped from 1/86 to 5/119, and then 5/247 to 7/247 - made for a tense fourth-innings. In the end Keatoboy had enough batsmen get in and make crucial fifties to get the team across the line. Bradman, who continued his strong form by hitting 71, was only outscored by Voges who made 74. This secured their team an important three-wicket win.

Keatoboy 232 (Bradman 65, Voges 51, Waqar Younis 7/64) & 7/266 (Voges 74, Bradman 71, Warne 3/49) defeated BLOWN8 266 (Kapil Dev 82, Tendulkar 76, Donald 4/60) & 230 (Waugh 67, Boucher 55, Steyn 3/24) by three wickets.

Round 4, Match 16

May-Z v Wookiedragon

Wookiedragon made first use of what seemed to be a good batting pitch, and Greg Chappell capitalised by making 113. Steve Smith made 55 and Javed Miandad 42 to provide support on the way to a total of 339. Wilfred Rhodes ended with four wickets for May-Z.

But at 0/136 May-Z was in a good position in reply. Trumper was then stumped for 60 but Boycott continued his hot form by making 106. They were the main contributions of note as May-Z's middle and lower order let an opportunity slip by conceding a 22-run lead on the first innings.

Wookiedragon's batsmen had a chance to seize control of the match but couldn't, with Steve Smith's second fifty of the match being the only shining light of the innings. They crashed to 186 all out, with Jim Laker ripping through the tail to finish with 4/27.

May-Z had what could be a tricky target of 209 to chase. At 5/55 it was looking more than tricky, as Wookiedragon had a golden opportunity to snatch a win. But May-Z knew it would only take one good partnership and the game was theirs and so it proved, with Everton Weekes combining with Alan Knott for a 139-run partnership which took them to the brink of victory. When both were dismissed with still 11 to get it looked like there may still be one more twist in the tale, but Rhodes and Laker got them home.

May-Z 317 (Boycott 106, Trumper 60, Ambrose 3/75) & 7/210 (Weekes 83, Knott 72, Spofforth 3/27) defeated Wookiedragon 339 (Chappell 113, Smith 55, Rhodes 4/26) & 186 (Smith 50, Laker 4/27) by three wickets.

A big team talk is needed before my next match. Certain individuals need to look in the mirror.....

AND THEY MIGHT NOT LIKE WHAT THEY SEE!!

Hobbs and Sehwag are giving me nothing as an opening combination, and dear old Kenny Barrington is having a so-so series averaging 38.00. Harvey, Pollock and Kallis are averaging 50+ and they are excused. However, we are taking our wickets too expensively - Hadlee is the only bowler to average under 30 per wicket (29.58), the others range from 31.07 to 38.00 (Derek Underwood, I’m looking at YOU!).

Need I paint “Elite Honesty” on the dressing room walls?? 😜

Round 5, Match 17

BLOWN8 v Eels Guru

BLOWN8 elected to bat after winning the toss and this must have pleased Sachin Tendulkar, as he struck a splendid 139. Sadly his only support came from a dour Mike Hussey who took 207 balls to make his 52. They were the only two to pass 15 as they made what seemed to be a below-par 269. Andy Roberts took five wickets.

Amazingly, Eels Guru had even fewer batsmen pass 15; only Keith Miller could, and even he made only 17. It was a disastrous total of only 103, with Dennis Lillee incredibly bowling unchanged for the whole innings; he ended with 6/57 to be the chief destroyer.

The game was firmly in BLOWN8's grasp, and this time the batsmen were able to hammer the advantage home. Tendulkar came within five runs of twin tons, Steve Waugh was dismissed on unlucky 87, and most other batsmen made starts on the way to 387 all out. Andy Roberts took five more wickets to end with ten for the match.

Chasing over 550, not even 122 from Richie Richardson could salvage a result for Eels Guru. In the end it was a much more respectable total of 402, but it still resulted in a 151-run loss and, finally, a win for BLOWN8.

BLOWN8 269 (Tendulkar 139, Hussey 52, Roberts 5/51) & 387 (Tendulkar 95, Waugh 87, Roberts 5/101) defeated Eels Guru 103 (Lillee 6/57, Anderson 4/21) & 402 (Richardson 122, McCullum 67, Waqar Younis 3/70) by 151 runs.

Round 5, Match 18

Wookiedragon v mounteverest

After choosing to bat first, Wookiedragon was restricted well by mounteverest's bowlers. Steve Smith made 55 but that was out of a team total of just 235, as Mitchell Johnson claimed the very good figures of 5/51.

mounteverest's batsmen fared better in their first innings; Greenidge and Haynes put on 134 before both fell in the 60s, before Richie Benaud added 70 valuable runs from number 8. It led to a team total of 354; a 119-run lead on the first innings.

Wookiedragon needed a significant third-innings to give their bowlers something to defend but that didn't eventuate. More superb bowling from Johnson - who claimed his second five-wicket haul of the match - kept Wookiedragon to just 188, a total that didn't include any fifties. Imran Khan got closest with 43, but it meant mounteverest would be chasing just 70.

They didn't have any problems knocking off the required runs, as Ricky Ponting and Martin Crowe were not out at the end of an eight-wicket victory.

Wookiedragon 235 (Smith 55, Johnson 5/51) & 188 (Imran Khan 43, Johnson 5/54) defeated by mounteverest 354 (Benaud 70, Ambrose 3/69) & 2/70 (Ponting 29*) by eight wickets.

Round 5, Match 19

Eels Guru v Scotty_WCE

Scotty_WCE sent Eels Guru in but the pitch proved to be OK for batting. Despite openers Ponsford and Morris scoring just six between them, Ian Chappell and Mark Waugh were able to bat for long periods. In fact, they put on 147, and Waugh was in sight of a century before being run out just six short. Wasim Akram, Marshall and Pollock took three wickets each as Eels Guru ended on 349.

What seemed to be a competitive total was soon shown to be sub-par, as Len Hutton and Allan Border took control. Hutton hit 162, and Border 140 not out to ensure their team would lead after the first innings. The lead was extended further by Bill O'Reilly who smacked 31 from number 11, as Andy Roberts took his third-consecutive five-wicket haul. The innings ended on 504.

Eels Guru trailed by 155 but their openers put in a much-improved showing, erasing the lead before a wicket fell. Ponsford made 126, but after the top four, the rest of the order contributed little, with the last nine wickets falling for 112. The total of 326 left Scotty_WCE with a potentially tricky chase of 172.

Ultimately it was anything but, as Hutton continued his strong form by hitting 70, before Viv Richards' 49* guided the team to victory.

Eels Guru 349 (Waugh 94, Chappell 89) & 326 (Ponsford 126, Morris 59, Sobers 3/46) defeated by Scotty_WCE 504 (Hutton 162, Border 140*, Roberts 5/125) & 2/175 (Hutton 70, Richards 49*) by eight wickets.

Round 5, Match 20

mounteverest v Matty76

Matty76 won the toss and chose to bat, and proceeded to pile on the runs. Neil Harvey and Ken Barrington put on 118 for the third wicket before both were dismissed just short of their centuries - 87 again proving unlucky, this time for Harvey. When those two were dismissed Ian Healy took it upon himself to bat smartly with the tail, and ended with 74* for his efforts. This all meant a score of 447 for Matty76 in the first innings, while Mitchell Johnson and Michael Holding took four wickets each for mounteverest.

In reply a lot of batsmen made starts for mounteverest, but only one could go on with it. Eight batsmen made double figures without passing 50, and the only one who did - Ricky Ponting - was given out lbw after a 279-ball effort for 98. Hence mounteverest, who ended with 316 all out, conceded a lead of 131 on the first innings.

Matty76 was in a position to potentially set mounteverest a big target, and so they did. Again there was an even spread of scores without anyone going on to a big one; Harvey top-scored with 62 despite being one of four batsmen to go past 40. It didn't matter though, as they declared on 6/301, leaving mounteverest facing a chase of 433 or batting out 119 overs for a draw.

At 3/74, and then 5/164, Matty76 would have been supremely confident of a win. But they didn't take into account Doug Walters, who produced a fourth-innings epic of 113 off 199 balls. This almost single-handedly secured a draw for mounteverest, as they ended up 7 down and 81 short of the target at the end of the fifth day.

mounteverest 316 (Ponting 98, Hadlee 3/69, Lindwall 3/80) & 7/352 (Walters 113, Greenidge 58, Hadlee 3/93) drew Matty76 447 (Barrington 91, Harvey 87, Healy 74*, Johnson 4/81, Holding 4/136) & 6d/301 (Harvey 62, Pollock 55*, McGrath 3/65).

Round 6, Match 21

Keatoboy v Matty76

Matty76 won the toss, chose to bat, and immediately regretted it. 30 overs later the innings was over, as Keatoboy rolled them for just 89. Sehwag scored 35 and only two others passed six as Allan Donald ripped through the order to take 6/39.

After that performance Matty76 needed a great performance with the ball. Unfortunately, when Don Bradman is in the opposition line-up that's no easy task and so it proved. Brian Lara made 118 but Bradman stole the show, finally living up to his billing as the greatest-ever batsman by making an incredible 272. It was part of a huge team total of 573; one which looked like being even bigger at 4/548 before the lower-order went quickly.

It was effectively a matter of pride now for Matty76's men, and the top three did their part by all making starts before all being dismissed either just short of or just past 50. After that though it was another sad-looking scorecard, as the final eight wickets fell for less than 50. This time Sydney Barnes did the most damage, taking 5/71 as Keatoboy prevailed by a massive innings and 261 runs.

Keatoboy 573 (Bradman 272, Lara 118) defeated Matty76 89 (Donald 6/39) & 223 (Harvey 55, Sehwag 54, Barnes 5/71) by an innings and 261 runs.

Round 6, Match 22

Keatoboy v May-Z

This time Keatoboy got to choose to wield the willow first, but again it was an underwhelming first innings. Adam Voges made 52* but it was slim pickings for the rest, as George Lohmann returned figures of 5/44 to restrict Keatoboy to just 169.

In reply George Headley led the way for May-Z. He made 85 from number 3 after both openers posted fifties as they lifted their team to 293, a 124-run lead. Sydney Barnes continued his good form by taking 4/52.

Keatoboy needed a second innings of substance to make a game of it, and in the end produced something that just gave them the slightest sniff. 63 from de Villiers and starts from most of the top seven batsmen meant they posted 264, as Lohmann tore through the line up once again - this time taking 7/45.

May-Z faced a chase of 141, and when they were 2/23 the game was alive. But an 84-run partnership between Headley and Weekes sealed the deal, as even a couple of late wickets couldn't stop May-Z from recording another victory.

Keatoboy 169 (Voges 52*, Lohmann 5/44) & 264 (de Villiers 63, Lara 56, Lohmann 7/45) defeated by May-Z 293 (Headley 85, Barnes 4/52) & 5/144 (Headley 62) by five wickets.

Round 6, Match 23

May-Z v BLOWN8

It was yet another case of a team winning the toss, electing to bat and then struggling badly; this time it was BLOWN8 who suffered that fate. No batsman could get on top of May-Z's potent bowling attack, as they put up a first-innings of a meagre 108. This time Mike Procter was the chief destroyer; he finished with the outstanding figures of 4/8 from 9 overs.

Once again May-Z's team found themselves well on top, and even a relatively low total had them still in a strong position. Boycott and Procter both made fifties, while the tail wagged to add some valuable runs, led by Jim Laker's 33*. Shane Warne took four wickets but a total of 223 meant a lead of 115 runs for May-Z.

BLOWN8, in dire need of a strong second innings, were unable to produce one. They passed their first-innings total, but not by enough; 43 not out from Kapil Dev could only lift the team to 168. Lohmann claimed yet another five-wicket haul and May-Z needed just 54 runs to seal their sixth win and top spot on the ladder.

Boycott fell early but Trumper and Headley were untroubled in knocking off the rest of the target as they claimed a comfortable nine-wicket win.
