2014 Select Series 2

Got a bit of a chuckle when I saw James Hird was a promo...then turned it over and it said "now Essendon coach"!

Hello All Collectors:

It is Steve Wang from Card Zone. The 2014 AFL Select AFL series 2 will be released in mid July 2014. Even though I hardly read the post from forum, as AFL Series 2 flyers have just been sent out, I would imagine the usual relentless bashing of select will start again, I had a look at the forum today.

Good to see the collectors speak out their opinions. But after the reading of the post, I feel that some of the comments are really childish and self centred.

I am over 50 years old and has been very independent for the whole life and I am my own boss. I speak out when I want to, do what I believe is right. I have to declare this to save your time of guessing as I am pretty sure that you would assume Select ask me to do so. Simply put: it is not!

I have no intention to argue with anybody, nor do I have to say something just because I have been carrying Select AFL cards. As a dealer carrying AFL cards for more than 20 years, After reading those comments, I feel compelled to speak out what I think.

I know that whatever I said here might bring out further abuse, well, that is how it is. I will not reply to any comments on the forum, but I can be contacted by email. If the following comments hurt somebody's self esteem, please remember, you are a man, not a little girl needs a cuddle every morning. Tough up!

My point is as follows:

1. AFL Trading Cards Series is based on the collectors market in general and the company's own schedule as well as plan. Whatever is released, it is not based on individual preference. Card collecting is only a hobby. If you like the series, collect them; If you don't like them, please don't waste your money. It is your choice to collect or not collect. Please don't think you are doing a company's favour--be aware that you are just one of the collector. Select didn't start their business in 1993 based on your personal preference, it doesn't do it now, and it is very unlikely they will base on personal preference in the future. So let's adjust ourselves guys!!

2. Different collectors have different judgment. What you don't like does not mean the majority collectors don't like. Please don't arrogantly talks like you represent the whole market. In the end, the future collectability will speak out itself.

3. When you see a series that does not appeal you, calm down gentleman!! The way you are talking on the forum is abusing and showing the low standard of you as a person. Bring out substantial and constructive suggestion, not just dig deep for what has been down before. One tree can't form a forest, bring out one or 2 special cards does not form one card series. AFL cards is not just for fun, it is also for collecting; It is not only for you today, it is also for the collectors of future. Please don't put one person above a group, please don't put one group above the society-- same as AFL footballers should never think they are above the clubs!

4. A good collectable series often takes time to be appreciated. If you can't appreciate it now, please hold yourself back a bit, and let the time and market to prove it. Please don't try to act as if you and only you were the market.

5. 2014 AFL Honours features AFL Brownlow Medalists of the past and present. This series WILL BE POPULAR among collectors regardless what you think.
If you don't like the series, please do you and also do the other people's favor-- save the money for your family's need such as gas bill, car reg etc and in the meantime, leave the limited stock of AFL Honours series to collectors who will appreciate the series. This is a win win solution.

A complete collection of all the brownlow medalists in the past will prove to be a collectable series that future collectors will treasure deeply. Select has planned this series for a while and proudly release it in the coming 2 years. If you can't enjoy it, please don't purchase it.

6. Since JHL send out the order form, most of the phone calls are requesting for more products than allocated. The fact is:2014 AFL Honours will be strictly allocated within the existing dealers. Even though the production is 9600 boxes x 36 packs, this series will be in high demand and sold out on the condition that those collectors who don't like the series do not purchase them.

7. Select Australia has been producing AFL cards and NRL card for more than 20 years. Looking back, Select has produced numerous popular and creative subsets. Select can do it before, Select is able to do it now, and Select will be able to do it again in the future. So, please don't worry too much on behalf of Select. I am carrying Select products, and I have no hesitation to back up this company. If I don't sincerely believe it, I won't spend large sum money on their product.

8. If Select has not done something you preferred, please don't be angry. If a company is subject to individual demand, I would think that their product won't be too much collectable as a narrow-mined suggestion will ruin the industry; If the company rely on general public to provide the brainchild, this company will be dangerous as it shows the company is not competitive enough to hold its own stand.

9. Collecting cards is for enjoyment. Some of the posts here make me wonder: is this the end of the world?? Life is too short, don't cry if the series is not according to your will.

Finally, my post here will surely get a angry storm toward me from some of you. But I can assure you all that: I won't be upset to any of your comments at all as I am too busy with serving collectors order. and also I never take it personal regardless what you said. The reason I put a post here is because some of the comments here are getting too far of the mark and too low in the standard which surprised me a lot. it is a shame to the collectors group. And for far too long, the negative prevails the scene here and it is INSANE.

Im sure most can respect what your saying but for the most part you have hit the nail on the head.
Select look after themselves. The cards they produce are making the sellers and second market such as yourself money.
but at the expense of the collectors themselves

and with the lack of real competition is holding the hobby back. The hobby we like and not do for money

mate i respect alot of what you do for the industry but the first rule of business is the business is not doing the customer a favour, the customer is doing the business a favour. I understand alot of your points but that line just left a poor taste in my mouth and goes against anything i learned whilst doing business management at university. Yes they may have a monopoly now but i would be extremly concerned if i was select and a second licence was granted!!

I know this is probably a stupid question but is Steve Wang an employee of Select?

Select didn't start their business in 1993 based on your personal preference, it doesn't do it now, and it is very unlikely they will base on personal preference in the future. So let's adjust ourselves guys!!

Yes we are doing Select a favour. We are buying their product off them, generating income. And it's not just "one of the collectors". As you can see from this forum 95% of collectors are not happy with the product Select is producing, and are now adjusting their spending accordingly. And also if you read this thread thoroughly, you could see almost all collectors want cards limited to a lower-number, etc. It's not one person's "personal preference".

2. Different collectors have different judgment. What you don't like does not mean the majority collectors don't like. Please don't arrogantly talks like you represent the whole market. In the end, the future collectability will speak out itself.

We aren't individually talking like we represent the whole market. As a forum we are speaking out about the product, saying we don't like it. As one of the major Australian card forums I think we probably make up a fair share of he market. We want the AFL card industry to thrive. Companies have to take criticisms from their customers.

Why do we have to calm down? As I mentioned earlier companies have to be prepared to take criticism from their customers, if they can't do that they'll never succeed. As for "constructive suggestions" please see the thread titled "What Select Should Really Release", people included myself have posted ideas.

4. A good collectable series often takes time to be appreciated. If you can't appreciate it now, please hold yourself back a bit, and let the time and market to prove it. Please don't try to act as if you and only you were the market.

Again, this forum makes up a fair proportion of the market. It's not just one person speaking out! It's a whole forum! Will you come back and admit you were wrong if the series does not take off and card values are low? As a "man" I hope so.

5. 2014 AFL Honours features AFL Brownlow Medalists of the past and present.

Again, if it doesn't prove to be popular will you come back and admit you were wrong? And yes, many of us as posted will be saving our money on this series, which combined with the higher number of cases will perhaps mean it won't sell out? That would be a wake-up call for Select.

See point above about series potentially not selling out.

Sure, some subsets have been great! But for us as collectors, they have not come often enough or well enough. Thee should be at least one "popular and creative subset" per series (minimum!). Last year's Prime Drafts were ok, Platinum Die Cuts in Prestige and Dynasty were nice and Brownlow Predictors in 2006 were cool. But apart from that what really stands out?

You're right, companies shouldn't "rely on the general public to provide the brainchild". BUT THEY HAVE TO LISTEN TO FEEDBACK! For years collectors have been making their concerns clear (yes, not one person but forum-fulls (?) of people.

9. Collecting cards is for enjoyment. Some of the posts here make me wonder: is this the end of the world?? Life is too short, don't cry if the series is not according to your will.

For some of us collecting footy cards is our one hobby that we love. We dedicate time and money to it, cherish our cards and will one day pass them down to our children. And we want decent cards to collect.
Some have already said they are considering leaving the hobby, leaving behind one of their true loves. After all, life is too short and we have to make the most of it.

Finally, my post here will surely get a angry storm toward me from some of you. But I can assure you all that: I won't be upset to any of your comments at all as I am too busy with serving collectors order. and also I never take it personal regardless what you said. Thank you for posting Steve, but as collectors we have put up with this for long enough, and as a forum we are trying to convince Select to up their game, and reinvigorate the footy card hobby.

According we should Steve we should lap up whatever Select release or keep our mouths shut.

Not sure if he knows what the internet is used for in that case.

Steve it's no suprise you would be on your white horse defending all things Select after all their success means alot to your business.

You may be to busy to respond to comments because you are taking customer orders but it didn't stop you from wasting your time writing a Select defense letter.

Well i can confirm after speaking to my brother and mate that we are not touching this stuff.

I will get what i need from my dealers at the markets and a low numbered Sheed from Ebay.

Even then,

Low numbered Sheed $100.00
Low numbered Chris Judd Masters $100.00
Common set $5.00
Chris Judd Brownlow subset. $5.00

That's 210.00 dollars at most that sellers will make from me and 0 dollars Select will be receiving.

Last year we bought a case each so that's 2500 x 3 that Select won't be getting from us.

I'm curious as to how many people actually are not touching this stuff.

Be honest with what you would have bought normally but lets get a running tally going to see how much in sales Select have lost on here alone.

Perhaps if they read this thread at some point it will start to sink in.

I doubt it but anything is possible.

Selects lost revenue.

Shueygaff --- $7,500

Scotty_ WCE --- $360.00

Lazlow--- $540.00

Bought two boxes last year, will buy none this year.

Increasing the print run AND increasing the price??

This COULD have been a popular series but the massive over inflation of top end inserts along with the price will ensure this series doesn't become what it could have..

Has the case price seriously gone up from $2500 to $2900 AND the print run increase from 7200 to 9600

That is greed to the max!

Hi @Steve Wang , as one of the moderators here on the site, I welcome you and want to say thank you for clarifying your point of view. I would encourage you to do this more often as this is a great platform for you to share information across some 7,000 + members, some of which are customers of yours or could be potentially be customers of yours in the future.

This forum is a place for passionate collectors to come and share their views like you have done today. I understand you are speaking in an individual capacity, but if there has been similar bashing of previous Select products, what has tempted you to come and share your thoughts with us this time round?

Surely hearing a lot of negative feedback about this product would raise some level of concern with you?

I want to go through a couple of your points with you.....you may never read these or acknowledge these comments but ill say them anyway.

1) I agree that Select release products at their discretion based on their own schedules, and you are right, if you don't like a product don't buy it. However is there a point in time where Select may take the opportunity to listen to collectors, the same collectors who are their customers as to what it is that they actually want to collect and purchase?

If I were making a product that people weren't interested in and hearing this from my customer base, wouldn't it be business 101 to find out what it is your customers are actually interested in collecting? Should it be the case Select that should adjust itself not the customer?

This seems like a very arrogant approach, you get what we give you.

3) The issue with people discussing criticism here on our boards in large part is due to Select not listening to what it is the customer wants. The overriding frustration collectors have is that Select has an exclusive licence, they make what they want not what the customers want.

I would bet you that if it were a non exclusive agreement, Select would struggle greatly to sell the releases they put out and would then have to listen to their customers and adjust their products to remain profitable?

6) Could it be said that JHL holds back stock initially to create the demand for this product?

Then stock is slowly released to resellers?

8) Select has released some amazing cards over the years, they have also failed to keep up with other manufacturers in terms of technology and progressing their designs. Again, if Select was open to taking on feedback from its customers and incorporating even 10% into its new products then a lot of these criticisms would disappear.

Look at ESP in the NRL, in the time they have released their products, they have improved their offering greatly and I have no doubt that 2014 NRL Elite will be a huge success.........and the reason for this? They listen to their customer base and give them what they want.

9) Totally agree, but again people are passionate about their hobbies....I am, and I hate seeing release after release look the same as the year before. Champions 2014 looks identical to Champions 2013.

Select have an amazing opportunity to create some cutting edge cards in the Australian market....do you know what is stopping them from creating more game worn jersey cards, multi sig cards other concepts? To a lot of people this almost seems like its just too much hard work for Select.

Finally, you are right, people will vent (like I have) as they are allowed to, as its a forum here and people are entitled to have their say.

I understand that you may not come back and read this as you are busy serving your customers.....but if this release was as strong as the previous Select releases, I highly doubt you would come here and put your point across like you have.

Surely you must see that people (collectors and potential customers of yours) aren't happy with whats being offered this time round?

Regards
Matt
