an average of e-bay completed/sold listings is the best guide we have...tells you what most people think the card is worth or at least what theyre willing to spend.
if there arent enough sold to guage an average, then you can try and dictate the value.

I rang him today he said he doesn't have any for sale but the last one he sold on its own for $1000
I've always wondered if he would ever pay the prices he charges for cards... anyway..... surely that is $1k for a full redeemed set and not one card with a hole in it?
About a year and a bit ago he sold sets numbered 003 & 004 with the Johnston signature for $1,300.
