Hi everyone,

As you know i'm a huge Penrith Panthers fan so I was excited to see that they were auctioning off the players indigenous jerseys via eBay for a local charity.

Now the auction below was for "Nathan Cleary's Penrith Panthers Indigenous Round Jersey"

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nathan-Cleary-039-s-Penrith-Panthers-Indigenous-Round-Jersey-/112407752715

Most people on first glance would have thought its Nathans Panthers Jersey worn in the Indigenous Round? When you go into the description it states:

"Penrith Panthers player's cut NRL Indigenous Round jersey signed by Nathan Cleary"

Now wanting to make sure I sent the Panthers a message today on Twitter and got this reply:

So to the person who paid $1001.00 for essentially a signed Nathan Cleary player issue jersey.....congrats on supporting a great cause....but for $160 you could have bought an indigenous jersey and had Nathan sign it at one of the many club appearances the team does.

Basically the same thing.

Had these been the proper match worn jerseys, id probably be selling a kidney to buy some of them, but in this case, im glad i did the research and saved my money.

Cheers
Matt

That seller is very clever in making the buyer think its a match worn one without scamming. Very clever.

wow, thank god i didnt jump on one thinking it was game worn also, dodgy..

There is a guy on one of the Panthers Facebook Supporter Pages who put a post up today saying he was really excited at buying 2 of the "Match Worn" jerseys (they cost him $1400)....don't have the heart to tell him they are not match worn!

Sydney roosters have done exactly the same thing through PlayBill PTY LTD or something like that. Pearce indigenous jersey went for $1300.. they word it 'as worn' but everything else on the ad does nothing to clarify it's not match worn but in fact does the opposite to promote product as it was worn in game.. disappointing!

Seems a lot of clubs are doing this now.

I will say one club that does it very well is the Cowboys. I've seen them state that they are game worn and in some cases even what half they were worn it.

There was a Thurston Milestone jersey where the first half jersey had embroidery on it stating the milestone and the second half one didn't....The second half one was auctioned off and they stated this was the one you would be getting.

Just think that a lot of clubs think people won't look into the jerseys very much and will buy them based on what people think they are"

I would not have the heart to NOT tell him. If he knows now maybe he can get a refund or at least hopefully the club gives him something extra as compensation! I think it is very poor from the club when the prices hard working people are paying for these jumpers under false pretenses are so much.

even when they are auctioning the game worn ones off they are still dodgy. i know for a fact who ever paid a motza for Dallin Watene Zelezniaks game worn jersey a few years ago got dudded because i watched them rub his spare jersey in the dirt on the training paddock, as there was no way he was handing over his actual debut jersey.

Section 52. Misleading and deceptive conduct. If anyone can message the buyer, in good conscience, you should. Furthermore, the clubs need to get it right. Unprofessional behaviour from some of them with memorabilia. Someone will try to sell it one day and be dudded.

ebay only displays information up to 90 days. so it would be long gone and impossible to track, was simply listing just to like matt inform people to be careful.

Raiders auctioning Round 12 "match worn" signed jerseys, with bids already coming in. Not sure how they can accept bids when the game hasn't been played yet. What happens if a player is injured/sick etc beforehand and doesn't play in the game?
Makes me even more sceptical about these so called "match worn" jerseys.

I think these will be legit because they are a one off jersey with the major sponsor removed for the Ricky Stuart Foundation. Proceeds obviously going to that charity

Great research for buyers here...

I only buy with club Coa that states the game it was used in....then I photo match the jersey

I'm 99.9% sure they would be legit too.
My main beef, was the fact they are taking bids prior to the match being played. There is no guarantee that the players whose jerseys are being bid on will actually play in the game. We see last minute changes to teams all the time due to a multitude of different reasons.

In past experience with an eels player that didnt end up playing the game, the bids were cancelled on that particular jersey, the auctioned finished a few days after the game was played and the replacement player jersey was listed and the auctioned lasted an extra two/ three days for that one
