Well myself and footycard were having an interesting chat about cards in the good old days and got me to thinking, for those of you who collected during the "Buzz" in the 90's what do you remember? Heres some things that stand out in my mind.....

* Paying Double BV for cards

* Paying $75 for a Shawn Bradley TSC 1st day Issue RC (good price at the time lol) I now own 2 of these that I bought a year or 2 ago ( $2 each I think) just to have as a reminder to what the hobby can do in a short period of time.

* Paying $60 for a Clarence Weatherspoon TSC 1st day Issue (first player I collected)

* Buying a Olajuwon TSC 1st day Issue and opening the screwdown later to have the 1st day issue stamp fall off (my friend later happened to be in a store and heard a guy bragging about his FAKE sale, we went down and faced him and he was more than happy to make up for his mistake! )

* Getting the Beckett a few days before alot of stores and seeing what had jumped in price then making the trip to most stores and buying up cheap and selling back high.

* Pulling out an average David Robinson Insert from a $5 pack of skybox and selling it back to the guy at the market for $60 cash!

Sorry theres no great PULL stories, but as most ppl know I still have never pulled a great card from packs/boxes, and I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

They are some of the main things that stick in my mind, how about you guys?

Time to reminisce :)

Great post Cal.
I remember paying Triple Beckett in the early 90's at a card store in the bottom of the Myer Centre in Adelaide!!

Wow Triple BV lol

I guess the bad things stick in your mind more than the good, but I will say that collecting cards in the 90's kept me out of alot of trouble I'm sure I would have gotten myself into otherwise.

I remember paying $60 for a Sharone Wright Magics all rookie team foil card.

I also remember busting 100's of packs of Collectors Choice cards looking for Gold Signature cards!

Buying the PBT NBA paper and looking through the Box scores.....The Aussie price guide and one on one?

Ah the memories of the early 90's!

Haha! Awesome thread cal!

I remember getting boxes of Collector's Choice for my birthday when I was 12 and being stoked I got a Johnny Dawkins Gold Signature!!!

But then in the next box pulling a Jordan Gold Signatures and feeling even better!

I remember when Finest, Emotion and Fleer Metal first came out and thinking $15 for a pack was crazy!!!!

But then pulling a Jordan Scoring Magnets from Metal and having the whole store congratulate me and even got my picture taken!!! As back then that card was worth $400+!!!

Also, I remember there being card stores!!! and even Newsagents and Whats New selling card boxes and packs!!!

I also remember Silhouette Stadium (aussie Beckett)!!! That was the shiznit!!!!

haha! guess we have the same memories and at the same time!!! haha

Also....... me and my little bro pulling all-nighters fri night into sat morning to watch the NBA at 9am.... for some reason we thought it'd be easier each week to stay up rather than get up at 9am.......90% of the time we made it to 9am only to watch the first 5 mins of the game and fall asleep :) That is a great memory I have. And hoping the game was Phoenix so I could watch 3-4 mins of my Bigman in action Oliver Miller :) and was always a pleasure to watch Sir Charles play.

Pulling a TSC First Day Issue RC of my favorite player at the time, Chris Webber, from a couple of packs. Damn, I should have sold that thing!

And my ability to pull an MJ or Larry Bird insert out pretty much every time I bought 1 or 2 packs of 93-94 Fleer...wish I had retained that skill, now maybe it only works for Exquisite?

- I remember, pulling my first auto of Chris Mills from a box of Skybox in 1996.

- Buying a couple of packs of Finest 1996, and hitting on an Allen Iverson RC! Was super stoked, it wasn't a refractor or numbered, just his regular card.

- Busting a box of Stadium Club, and pulling a dual-auto of Chris Webber/Kerry Kittles...couldn't put that damn thing down for days.

- Traded it for an Allen Iverson EX-2000 Credentials RC /399! And later on added his Chrome RC. Gorgeous cards, but when I got out of the hobby in the late 90's, sold them off.

My greatest 90's pull was a 94-95 Shawn Kemp 1st day issue - the stamps were total crap but it was a sick card!
My best deal was picking up the very same KG finest rc I have today for $24 NZ back when the book value (and it mattered then!!) was about $40US.

We had a mag here in NZ called 'card crazy' and I even had 2 card stores in Dunedin for a while - not a sausage now!!!

Lets be careful not to turn this into "your best pull" thread, theres plenty of those around.

This is what you remember about the Hobby from the 90's

Cheers Cal

Great thread Cal!!

I remember....

* Starting 100s of different player collections, just cos I thought they were cool.

* Trading half of those player collections for about 50 different player collections!!!

* Buying $1 "hot packs" filled with 10 cards, including 1 "hit" and pulling Grant Hill NBA Jam Sessions RC, and also an MJ Intense from Emotion!!!!

* Collecting Emotion, and paying $12-$15 a pack... OUCH!! (brought a box about 6 months ago for about $27US!!!)

* Busting packs and packs of 94-95 Ultra trying to get a Scoring King.

* Almost buying a Barkley Scoring King for $45, only to never do, then picking it up on Ebay for $0.50...

* Pulling an MJ Total D from 95-96 Fleer

* Watching a mate pull the Shaq Scoring King from 94-95 Ultra.

* Trying to trade for it.... ha ha ha

* Trading an unopened pack of 94-95 Skybox Premium for a Jason Kidd Draft Picks (same set) and in the pack was a Eric Montross Draft Pick... lol the odds!!

* Starting a Card Club in school & catching a mate trying to pick my MJ Total D

* And of course, paying double BV for cards.... how bad did we want sh!t back then.... lol!!!

Maybe some of the Perth people can remember this (if they're not too young) ...

Sitting in the card store on Milligan Street, Perth (think there is a Shaver Store there now) every Saturday morning hoping for that great Shaq or 'Zo insert or rookie card.

Doing a local newspaper delivery round just to buy that next pack of cards ...

Back when expensive packs were $3-4!!

hahahaha same here man, same here.

i remember buying a pack of Finest b4 basketball training at bankstown stadium back in 95 and pulling a Kidd RC and the Jordan with the number 45 jersey on.

also the 1st box i opened was a B'Day present from my dad. Stadium Club 94-95 from i think kings comics wen it was downstairs in sydney.

my 1st pack pulled auto was a mark jackson autographic in 96.

my 1st cards were the 91 skybox set with the gold borders

the best memory is meeting Jason Kidd at the Nike training camp at Bankstown stadium and getting my Collectors Choice Kidd Rc signed.

also actually collecting complete sets.

- I also remember calling the NBA hotline phone number to find out who won the Slam Dunk title at the Allstar weekend.....cost about $5 and the description of Isiah Riders dunk was sketchy at best.

- Working in a card store and at Card shows for payment in boxes and food.....sometimes both.

- Busting boxes of Emotion, Flair, Stadium Club and the old Fleer.....when there was an insert in each pack.

- Selling to card shops at beckett value, buying at double beckett value....cause of the exchange rate.

- Paying $50 for David Robinson's RC.

- Watching Tazo's outsell NBA cards in next to no time.

- Seeing the Sydney Kings play against the Tigers on Channel Ten....in Prime time.

- NBA Jam session at Darling Harbour and standing in line to get autographs from BJ Armstrong and Terry Porter.

- Early morning train rides to Parramatta to check out the 3 .....yes thats right 3 card stores all within 5 minutes of each other.

Oh the memories.....

Trading cards at school! Was great fun :)

I collected Jordan and was proud to hit the 150 card mark in 1995, at the age of 11 :D (Who knows how I got there since I didn;t have any money  Shrewd business man I must have been!)

I used to get the beckett and sit down and go through pricing all my cards and tally up the total and marvel! (Remember, 11 years old)

A dickhead at school stealing a bunch of my cards from my school bag :anger:

The vice principal taking a handful of cards off a friend at the time which had a Chris Webber Jam Session oversized rookie in it and thinking it was simply a card out of line. *Whack* on the end of that oversized card to put it back into place and full on folded the card...he cried for the rest of the day cause that was a BIG card back then!

A lady at the market in Cowes Phillip Island holding MJ, Barkley and Pippen cards for me each time I came down :)

And the best thing? I have all those oldies, still in their folders, in the same order! You name it, I have all the stars cause I started player collections of all of them, Mourning, Hill, Ewing, Shaq, Jordan, Pippen, Barkley, Wilkins, Kemp, Johnson, Robinson etc... :D

hahaha nice matty

I'll also add

breaking Jam Session oversize packs lol "Tower of Power" my ass

watching my fav player at the time "Perry" drain 3's for the S.E Melb Magic.
