Hey all,

Just wanted to hear some experiences about shipping lots to COMC, and selling as singles through them.

Any dramas or problems with doing this from Australia?

Cheers!

COMC has been good for me.

Be mindful that entry level cost is US$0.50 per card. I only send over cards that are selling on the platform for $1+. I've found economy post for 400-ish cards from Aus to COMC is about US$40, so that's another cost to consider.

They are generally good at scanning cards in to inventory in a timely manner. The platform itself is super user friendly.

Happy to answer any further basic queries.

Amazing - thanks for that.

I'm not looking to send any common cards, but mainly stuff that's $10 - $50 sale price.

Essentially trying to get around the crazy costs to ship from Oz to the US which are a massive hindrance to selling from here haha.

Great platform - ability to set your sale price with an auto reject offers below x% of listed price and auto accept % is great.

Check through all your scans once processed and make sure any flaws are noted as there is a option for the buyer to return it if flaws weren't noted on the listing. I have done this. From Aus back to USA was a pain but it was clearly not visible on the card I bought and they automatically transferred back my $ (and out of the sellers account I assume).

If you'd asked this in the middle of 2020 I would've teed off on them but that was then. I started using them in 2018 and as another mentioned it's a very user friendly site - especially for selling. They do all the work and you just set a price and adjust it whenever you want. You can then either use the proceeds to buy cards or cash out. You do have to be careful what you send though.

You need to get around $0.85 for a card not to lose money even at the cheapest rate. They charge $0.50 per card but you as the seller wear a $0.25 shipping 'tax' and then there is 5% sales commision and another 10% if you want to cash out. Given some cards drop in price, especially when they are newish ones, you need to give yourself a margin to work with. Of the 400 I just sent in some of them are selling for $0.60 which means they have dropped 60% since I sent them in and I will actually lose money on some cards. If I sell a card at $0.60 the real price is 0.35 given the shipping 'tax' and then they take 5% from the $0.35. That means I'm getting $0.33 back from a card I paid $0.50 to list. I would then lose another $0.033 when I cash out. Thankfully there's only a handful of those in this batch and it looks like they are averaging out at $10 per card which will be nice when it's all done. If you are lucky some of the cards you send in will actually rise in price between now and when you sell them.

If it weren't for comc I probably wouldn't be nearly as engaged with the hobby as I am today. I'm a big fan of theirs( other than a period in 2020 when they were doing my head in). They are back to their pre-covid standards. Good communications etc.

Fun fact( though not for me). The first consignment I ever did with comc I sent in about 40 worthless aussie rules cards as box fillers not thinking they would be processed. Very naive of me. Of course they processed them so I paid $10 for that( it was $0.25 back then) and then just donated the cards.

In short make sure the cards are at least around the $1.00 USD mark, preferably slightly higher, if using the standard service.

Good luck with it.

Thanks so much for this - very insightful and helpful.

Basically the cards I'm looking to send and sell through COMC would range from $10 - $200 USD looking at comps - all I'm trying to do is get them available to the US market for cheaper than like $22 AUD shipping which is obviously a huge problem when selling from Oz.

Seems like COMC is a good option based on the replies in this thread, and I'll have to look further into the fees on what I'd be selling, but surely it can't be worse than selling through Ebay haha

Dude, I'm glad you commented. Super naive of me but I did not know there was a 'donate' option, just took a look at my inventory manager and saw it.

When I first started using the service, I sent in wayyyyyy too many base cards, stupidly thinking they were all going to sell and I'd make nice coin. Thought I'd be stuck with storage costs for ages until I shipped all the duds back. Now I can just drop them all without having to worry any longer :)

Hi fellow COMC users, off topic here, but I am actually looking at sending cards home but noticed that they have removed the shipping option with tracking. The only options now are economy (untracked) or Express which is super expensive. So I thought by sending it domestically to ShipMyCards would give me that option, no, still no tracked option other than the Express which starts at USD$37 and $1 per card on top.

my last shipment
priority rushed to SMC $17.99

SMC fees were $5 for processing of the boxed lot and then $35 fedex uninsured. Can expect about $10+ depending on insured value.

These are the only options I was given for 36 cards:

Not sure if the middle option is what they called Priority back then?

I have nearly 800 cards listed there from $1us up. The thing to be aware of is that if you use their lowest option to list $0.50 cents it takes about 2 weeks to arrive at their headquarters and I think 120 days before they are listed on your inventory page, the price the cards are selling for when you ship might not be the price they are selling for when they are listed.
The other thing to remember is that it is a rush to the bottom. I collect MLB and the hottest player is Franco. The last time I looked at Beckett his rookie card listed at $8 and you could buy it on COMC for around $0.87 with 400 cards listed.

These are good points for newbies to consider. I will add that COMC is processing the cheapest option for listings far quicker rn, I've just had stuff scanned in appx 4 weeks from delivery.

Have a look at 2021 Donruss football base. The Tom Brady card #1 books for $1.50 to $4.00 on Beckett. Didn't look at last sales on Ebay. There are 49 cards on Comc ranging from $0.99 to $8.13.

Just a quick question if anyone can help.
How does it work with import duties and getting cards I've bought on comc shipped to me. I haven't had any cards shipped since legislation changed and am looking to get over $1000 worth of cards shipped. Can I prepay this? I dont want it held up somewhere where i have to take time off work to sort out. There is an option for gift receipt instead of listing value, does this change anything?

Here are a few points to consider:
  1. Consider COMC as a mail forwarder so they do not collect any GST for our government, so what that means is if you do not ship parcels with a total declared value (contents + postage) of AUD$1000, you will not be charged any GST.
  2. In order to stay within this AUD$1000 limit, you want to first reduce the postage component (see point 3) and build your shipment one card at a time (using your inventory), and keep track of the total amount. The declared value is based on your purchase price on COMC. You will be asked for a declared value for any card that was sent to your COMC account through their mailbox service. So just make sure you also count that in your calculations. And remember everything on COMC is USD, so make sure you look at the conversion rates and stay under $800 just to give yourself a buffer.
  3. If you are into saving even more money, take advantage of the $5 flat rate shipping which is somewhat tracked anyway because of the courier that they use. It's just not something you can track on AusPost but last time I got SMS telling me the ETA for my parcel. The flat rate is only offered up to a total declared value of USD$400, so split your shipment into smaller ones if you are not in any rush.
NOTE: Just in case you are an upstanding citizen and would like to give the government more tax. There is no way that COMC will collect this GST, so make sure your shipment is over AUD$1000 which will then trigger a customs workflow that will charge you 10% GST on the total declared value as well as a service fee ($90 a few years ago).

Thanks mate, appreciate the info and advice. Interesting there is also a service fee after the 10%. Thought the would just charge you the 10% gst and be happy with that.
I think the Australian Government operates under the attitude that if you choose to buy from sellers who don't play by their rules, you are creating an inconvenience for them, so it is your duty to pay for all expenses incurred by the tax collection process/workflow.

Thanks for all your help Brian

Ive requested the economy untracked option on an order of low value items just to test it out... If it goes missing or takes forever, Ill survive....

Just kicked off my first order (buying from them) with COMC this week.
Found there site to be super easy and user friendly.
Shout out to " oz card" going through old posts and reading user's thought's and tips was a help and played it's roll in putting my mind at ease
Even with the woeful aust$ had a blast shopping it up.
