Luka Doncic mailday

If you have some $ to put into it, grab one of these, graded or raw - can almost guarantee a good rise in price

the gap between these and the base RC is way too big.
The RC #177 has a pop10 of about 1000
The Rookies has a pop10 of 71....

it looks crazy too. It’s interesting to see who’ll be the new Zion next yr and will the reach his highs? To me Zion has smashed doncic

The thing I look at with the prices for the young guys is. How good can they possibly be? What is Zion’s ceiling? Best PF of all time? Tim Duncan? What are Duncan’s cards worth? Less than corresponding Williamson ones I am sure.

(I do admit to a large amount of ignorance around pricing, but I am sure the above relative values would be true.)

Now Williamson may have a more exciting game than Duncan and he may have a more outgoing personality and thus generate some additional value and following that way. But, is that enough to account for the massive disparity in card prices? That is before you even get in to the potential for injury - which all players have but appears even higher in Williamson’s case.

It just seems so much of his cards prices are a combination of hype, speculation and the virus induced down time many appear to have.

Doncic is the same to a degree for me. To his credit he does have a longer than 19 game track record of elite production at a young age. His ceiling might be a modern Larry Bird but what are the odds he lives up to the hype? Like 3%?

For those who are old enough remember Penny, remember Hill. Hill especially was better than either Williamson or Doncic for 5 or 6 seasons. His cards were some of the most expensive around (outside MJ) then what happened...

I will love watching both guys carve out their careers but could never justify paying the current prices for their cards to add to my collection. Now if you were buying to trying and quickly flip for $ than fair enough, but, that sounds like work and I want collecting to be fun not work!

Of course everyone is free to differ and there are plenty of amazing cards of both guys out there which would be great in anyone’s collection (at the right price).

I agree that the prices are too high based on what they have done. So much is speculating at this point. Everyone is bored.

I sort of agree with the Grant Hill comparison but believe Doncic is already better than Hill ever was and his experience projects him to do great things, like top 5 player all time good things. My hot take is that Zion will be out of the league within 7 years. Now, he could (must) get some help, training and structure like Steph Curry did, and this would completely alter that trajectory but he has too many red flags for me to put any $ into. Whatever of his stuff I get I sell and put that into Luka or KG.

Out of everyone at the moment besides Jordan and LeBron, the prices for Doncic might be the most justified. He has been overseas and won like everything there is to win over there and now has to do some of it in the NBA, I'm so hyped to watch. He might have landed on the perfect team to do it to. Cuban, Dirk history and now building on it with Porzingis and Doncic.

Here's Hill v Doncic

Doncic, certainly projects well and has a chance to be great but so much still has to go right for him.

When making the statistical comparisons bear in mind that current guys are playing at a much higher pace than the 90s and 00s. If you break out Hill’s per 100 possession stats they are closer, though he was never the scorer Doncic is. He was much superior defensively, however. Plus, you have the changes in perimeter defensive rules and ability to zone/crowd the paint which has freed up perimeter guys and the overall mindset move to more 3PT which has increased offensive efficiency. Hard to believe a guy like Hill barely shot 3s in his younger days.

Career numbers will look bad for retired guys vs in their prime performers too and will be especially tough on Hill and Penny because they played so much after their major injuries. Look at Hill - he is a Hall of Famer and played 2/3 of his career as a broken shell of his former self. And his cards are worth peanuts in the big scheme of things. That is how high the bar is for Williamson/Doncic to try and maintain their current values.

Not that I don’t hope they don’t - especially Doncic as he is the foundation of my 30 team fantasy squad!

It all comes back eventually to collect what you like and not what will make you money. If you like Bryant Reeves go for it, could have a great collection without as much competition as having to outbid Zion flip chasers!

You can't compare eras but everyone will always try to. And the players of eras gone by will always feel disrespected by the youngsters and that they could beat them lol

Too true. I am glad I PC someone not too expensive. I do admit to often thinking how great it would be to PC a very cheaply priced player though.

Hmm, now my youngest brother did really like Brevin Knight...

haha - I’m happy I like Stromile Swift and Darius Miles! Let’s me pick up so many cool looking 90’s cards for cheap and check out all the stuff I couldn’t afford back then!

Just saw this thread!

Epic cards! Didn't even realise there was an Exquisite offering! You definitely whacked the ol' super fund into this mailday - but Luka is that once in a generation talent that people talk about - talent is definitely there. His Airness, King James and Luka - dude seriously needs to get a better nickname though!
