The Official 2017 TLA Elite NRL Thread (Sell Sheet Page 10, 1/1 Preview Page 17)

I've heard from a good source they have resigned for another 5 years...

You are very much on the mark.......someone else did bid for it, and got very very close (I actually saw the proposal) but TLA/ESP have it for another 5 years.

Completely get where you are coming from in terms of moving away from the hobby, is just a non stop cash leaking exercise the last few years. The marvel set, Signed premiership sets etc do not help either in that respect

Exactly. If it's going to be $2-3k to be a team collector over future years it is just going to be a constant money drain.

I think the difference between NRL and other sports is that a lot of team collectors are completionists. When that becomes unaffordable it is pretty easy to give up on the hobby as a whole.

I only collect two players basically and that is bad enough for all the different mojos and then throw in the occasional sig cards etc etc. Feel for the team collector now with the amount of top end cards

How do American sports collectors go with multiple manufacturers with multiple sets for each sport each year. Surely tnose collectors don't get everything?

All I'm after is common 18 cards per team. How come no nrl manufacturer can satisfy that? We've gone from 18 a team in 1995-97 to 12 for most of 00s and into 10s now going to 11, then 10 commons per team. Cut the parallel shit out and make either Traders or PP the bigger common set. And Elite, no nuffies...defeats the purpose of the name Elite IMHO.

If Australia post can get 20 clean shots per team for the stamps, surely ESP can do the same?

right ON.

The vast majority of American sports collectors are team and/or player collectors. Set builders will concentrate on a very limited number of specific products. Sounds like we're heading down the same path and we only get two releases per year, not 20 or 30 to choose from.

Why the negativity?

Would you rather what's out now or 1998 and 1999 releases? That's right there was nothing.

Mate, the "negativity" is a function of the widely held opinion of many current and former collectors. Some of whom wouldn't sweat a return to the late 90's.
I just don't like the direction we've taken. We get what we're given but that doesn't mean we can't opine and critique.

I'm generally quite happy.

However, there are a lot of cards to collect and collecting habits, tastes and goals are shifting.

I am on record as a commons collector. Others love hard to find, hard to chase cards and that's cool too. We're not all the same. Throwing out a 'oh you want to go back to nothing!?' Is a bit of a meaningless argument. Lets take it to the other extreme - do you want sets of 1/1s that cost $$$s with no real chance of getting one?

I cant blame esp either for these exclusive sets they're doing. The licence fees are huge and they are in business. They, nor I, dont give a hoot if it's fair or not. I've made my choice on what to collect and I try to help a few others with things they need that I get and don't want. However, if there is a chance they can make a range of products that satisfy a variety to most collectors then good on them. I like to make suggestions, and sometimes what I write is not only my idea but also my kids. They're present collectors and future buyers. Make them happy too.

And I wasnt being negative. I clearly stated that if the NRL can supply or Aust Post can source 320 head and shoulder shots for stamps, the same/similar shots used by various media outlets, then surely the nrl and esp need to work a better deal to produce cards. In fact, i have messaged the rlpa that its not fair as by not having a card affects their ability to earn revenue. In fact, i suggested a footy card set should really cover all 25 nrl contracted players.

I love commons too, I hope ESP eventually realise 9 or so cards per team is just not enough. 18 is the ideal number, to suit their folders they sell. This would also mean that instead of (for arguments sake) 1 million possible common sets per release, there are 500,000 common sets, making them slightly more valuable ;-)

So does that mean the Guernsey cards will be a whole different concept with the patch as apposed to Road to Finals/fortune?
