As a general comment I find it interesting that this much coin is being given to some average guys given the general financial uncertainty. Grant getting 20 mill per, Harris 19, Bertans and Morris 16, and a guy not on your list in Clarkson getting 13 mil from the Jazz. Not short deals either - though there will obviously be options in most of them.

Compare this to MLB where decent players with reasonable contracts are being non-tendered and many of the non-stars are likely to settle for one year deals.

I know the NBA season was only minimally affected by COVID in comparison to MLB but I still would have thought the prospect of a season with no fans would have been enough for owners to cry poor especially on the mid-tier guys. Seems that has not happened though.

Is there some sort of escrow mechanism which automatically adjusts if the cap is lower in future years?
I thought that was how the revenue sharing model worked. They are still very big numbers for these guys though

As I understand it player salaries have to total to a % of the league’s revenue as per the CBA (it is around 50% from memory but would have to look it up to find the exact number) if the player salary total falls below that then teams have to pay out to players the difference. I also believe a portion of player salaries also go in to an escrow account in case the alternate is true and salaries are above the %. If they aren’t the players get that money back.

The maximum player salaries are also a % of the salary cap (which is calculated based off the above % of league revenue) so if the league revenue falls, then the cap falls and the max salaries players can sign also fall. What I am not 100% sure of is whether existing contracts get “grandfathered” in to the fixed dollar amount based off what the cap was when the contract was signed or if they also adjust as future caps do. I imagine they must be fixed as you always see set numbers quoted even years after the original contract was signed.

Despite obviously being very successful since Harden's arrival I feel the recent Houston teams have fallen short of fulfilling their potential and to a degree wasted the best year's of Harden's career because they never give a consistent line up a decent run.

Howard lasted three seasons including a trip to the WCF and maybe that was time to move on. However, Paul only lasted two and again a trip to the WCF and a 3-2 lead before he got hurt. Westbrook is now gone after one.

I loved that Houston went all in with their funky ultra small ball line up last season. Would they have won a title? Probably not. But, they embraced their style of play 100% and were looking really good before the Covid-enforced break. Coming back in the bubble Westbrook got hurt and they never really clicked.

Why not bring the same crew back again? (minus D'Antoni if he was set on leaving).

I know Harden must be hard to play with but the guys who come there must know that and accept it.

Just seems disappointing every new addition only seems to make it a season or two until they are moved on. That as much as anything seems to be what has cost them a Finals berth or title shot. (And a historically good GSW team I guess!)

Surprised at markkanen no extention.

Luke Kennard $ surprised me. Compared to Kuz
Well Kuzma kind of isn’t very good (well not as much as his reputation seems to be). Not saying Kennard is any better and advanced metrics don’t exactly love him but they still see him as better than Kuzma.

I would say Kennard is worth more because his best skill - shooting - will always be valuable while Kuzma just looks like the prototypical guy who would get good stats on a team that wins 20 games. Though credit to him for playing his role in LA.

Was really surprised that he was the guy it seemed like the Lakers wanted to keep in the Davis deal. Despite all the negative press and not living up to the (possibly unfair) hype I felt that Ball was a defensive beast and Ingram had the potential to be a stud (albeit an unnecessary one next to LeBron and Davis). Of course maybe the Pels thought that too just wanted Ball and Ingram more.

incomprehensible that my guy Kyle still hasn’t signed too.......wth

fair points, I think sometimes it seems to come down to they have to sign best available after waiting too long looking around.

Certainly an element of that as well. If there aren’t many guys left with the skill set you want then you have to pay for one of them especially if it is a desired skill.

Also I would not discount the hidden value teams place on not wanting to look stupid. The Clippers just traded Shamet - a guy who offers a similar skill set who they had a team option on the next season then could extend a QO to for 2022/23 - to get Kennard. If the Clippers were worried Kennard may walk after this season then trading potentially 3 years of Shamet for 1 of Kennard doesn’t look so good. So, lock him up now even if it is an overpay.
