The NBA announced today a new format for the 2020 NBA All-Star Game designed to increase the level of competition throughout the game, provide additional excitement at the finish and make the outcome of every quarter count for charity.

The changes include a new fourth-quarter format that will honor the late Kobe Bryant, who earned 18 NBA All-Star selections and a record-tying four NBA All-Star Game MVP awards. Additional plans to honor Bryant during NBA All-Star 2020 in Chicago will be announced at a later date.

In the 69th NBA All-Star Game, Team Giannis and Team LeBron will compete to win each of the first three quarters, all of which will start with the score of 0-0 and will be 12 minutes long. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the game clock will be turned off and a Final Target Score will be set.

The Final Target Score will be determined by taking the leading team’s total cumulative score through three quarters and adding 24 points – the 24 representing Bryant’s jersey number for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career. The teams will then play an untimed fourth quarter and the first team to reach the Final Target Score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

East All-Star Starters:
Giannis Antetokounmpo (captain), Joel Embiid, Pascal Siakam, Kemba Walker, Trae Young

East All-Star Reserves:
Jimmy Butler, Ben Simmons, Kyle Lowry, Khris Middleton, Domantas Sabonis, Jayson Tatum, Bam Adebayo

West All-Star Starters:
Anthony Davis, Luka Doncic, James Harden, LeBron James (captain), Kawhi Leonard

West All-Star Reserves:
Nikola Jokic, Damian Lillard, Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, Chris Paul, Brandon Ingram, Russell Westbrook

So they are basically playing 3 quarters and 3 minutes.

As much as the all star game doesn't mean anything these days, I did just prefer seeing the best from the East up against the best from the West.

Just doesn't have that same appeal as it used to.

So what advatage does the team who won 2 out of the first 3Qs get? Or whats the real point of those Qs then? There seems no insentive or am I missing something?

I'm sure I read the winner of each quarter gets to donate an amount of money to their chosen charity?

As part of NBA All-Star 2020, more than $1 million will be contributed to Chicago community non-profit organizations through NBA Cares outreach efforts. These efforts will culminate during the NBA All-Star Game when each team will play for a Chicago-based charity beneficiary, as selected by team captains Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks and LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers.

The community organization selected by the winner of each of the first three quarters will receive $100,000 – a total of $300,000 donated to charity for those three quarters. The winner of each of the first three quarters will be the team with the higher score at the end of the 12-minute quarter.

The winning team in the NBA All-Star Game (i.e., the team that reaches the Final Target Score first) will earn $200,000 for its community organization.

If the first or second quarter ends in a tie, the $100,000 charity award for that quarter will be added to the next quarter’s award. If the third quarter ends in a tie, the $100,000 charity award for that quarter will be added to the award of the team that wins the NBA All-Star Game.

If one team wins each of the first three quarters and reaches the Final Target Score first, $500,000 will be donated to the winning team’s charity and $100,000 will be donated to the losing team’s charity.

The 2020 NBA All-Star Game will take place on Sunday, Feb. 16 at the United Center in Chicago, airing live at 8 p.m. ET on TNT and ESPN Radio in the United States. The NBA All-Star Game will reach fans in more than 200 countries and territories in more than 40 languages.

does it really matter how they donate the money? does anyone actually care? forget the gimmicks and just play an entertaining game. thats how you save the ASW...

Something needed to change at least they’re trying something. Now what to do with the dunk comp!?
the issue with the dunk comp isnt the format. theres only so many times you can jump over something and it looks impressive. again, its on the players. they need to be more creative. the great contests dont rely on some crazy new system. the players have to rise to the occasion. like in 2000. or the gordon vs lavine battle. even 2008.
dang. i think maybe i am just a grumpy old man...

The biggest thing missing from the all dunk contest, at least for me, is not having the bigger names. Having lesser know rookies and sophmores it doesnt feel as important

yeah you're right, I didn't mean the format either, it's definitely not the same as the old days, either the players don't think the dunk comp holds much weight or there's too much at risk with little gain. Not sure how they would get inspired to go in it but all they should have to think about is Jordan, Dominique, Spud, Vince - they could definitely etch their name on the trophy with some greats.

its weird that once every few years there's a great comp. apart from the 'nique vs MJ years, its kinda always been that way i guess, so maybe not weird. could be a flaw in the entire concept? maybe they should only hold it every 2nd or 3rd year? give everyone a break from the monotony. make it more elusive for players to win. interchange it with an assist comp or something?
