The first match of the inaugural AFL Women's competition will take place tomorrow. It looks like Select will be including some AFLW cards in the 2017 Footy Stars set (see the photo in the Footy Stars thread). Edit - Select have posted on Facebook that these cards will be giveaways at AFLW games, not included in the Footy Stars set.

So, how will you go about collecting them? If your AFL team has a women's team, will you collect the women's cards? If your team doesn't have a women's team yet, what would you do?

It's kind of an unprecedented situation in footy cards history, so it would be very interesting to hear your thoughts!

Good post @Scotty_WCE because I was wondering the same thing.

Select are certainly making it hard which does seem odd. They have posted the following on their Select Footy Cards Facebook page (along with some images of the cards)...

"We are proud to be supporting the AFL Women's with their very own Select Footy Cards! These are ONLY AVAILABLE AS GIVEAWAYS at selected AFLW matches, school visits and clinics while stocks last. So make sure you get down and show your support!"

So even if you go to matches there is no guarantee they will be available - as only at "selected" matches.

As you'd expect the comments section associated with the Fb post has already kicked in. So maybe they will listen, but you'd assume that anything they do will have had the AFL's blessing.

Maybe some common sense will prevail and the cards will become available for wider circulation/direct purchase later, but certainly this approach will just encourage more activity on secondary markets (eg eBay) and maybe from Select affiliated card sellers for the cards.

But maybe it is only a very limited production run.

@Matt26 have you heard anything about Select's approach to these cards?

I haven't, but I have to say its a bit disappointing that they didn't find a way to get them into the Low End release....even a couple of players per team.

Agree. Should adopt Tap n Play's approach & include women's league within the base release.

Maybe timing is an issue with the season starting this weekend (with GF on 25 March), but still some overlap with Select's low end release in early March.

Ah, interesting. Thanks for posting because I hadn't seen that post by Select!

So looks like there won't be any women's cards in the main releases this year. I guess the question then becomes what would you do if they were included in future releases? And what would be the ideal way of including them in the set (e.g. included in the base set, own insert subset)?

I would say there would be plenty around, I have heard Select now have rights for auskick so I would say they could be in auskick packs too

Select have replied to the numerous Fb comments with the following....

Select Footy Cards

Hi Guys, these cards were made for the AFL and the distribution is at their discretion. We do not have any for sale, they are only available as give-aways at selected AFLW matches, school visits and clinics while stocks last.

Well guys, I reckon if your team does not yet have a women's squad you either try to become an AFLW master set collector or simply wait til your team eventually has one! Must say planning a Women's PC is an ideal idea because you know that all cards ARE GUNNA BE CURRENT! In other words, you will not have to go to the trouble of tracing down cards from previous years you have missed!

Yeah there will be a female award winner as part of the medal set I reckon. And maybe add the captains of each gilts to the team leaders set.

Have asked Select for a checklist on Fb, but nothing as yet.

However, I believe there a 7 cards per team, so a fairly sizeable "release" for a giveaway/promotion exercise.
(7 cards x 8 teams = 56 cards)

I think you'll find the ones being given away at matches are team sets of the teams playing at that venue. Not giving away full sets.

Cheers. Appreciate the clarification.

Don't get me wrong, nothing said on this forum, or any other, is going to change the way these cards are being distributed.

My post was just simply to let any collectors wanting to collect the cards know what they are facing - particularly if they haven't had a game played in their city yet, or can't get to games, or other promo events.

I could be wrong but that was just the feeling I got.

I know that this is venturing off-topic but my mind goes back to the much-criticised and quite confusing Tri-signature card featuring Matthew Lloyd, Chris Judd and Jonathan Brown. How bloody awesome - in this inaugural season of the Women's AFL - would it be to have something similar featuring Daisy Pearce, Moana Hope and Katie Brennan (for example)? :)

The cards were handed out last night at the bulldogs game, but only bulldogs cards.

Yet they had the nerve to post the other day, offering a ballot and those who were drawn to purchase a 'team' set (not whole set) for $50!!!

Their eyes lit up with $$ it seems.

They copped a backlash and took it down not long after.

Yeah was very dissapointing. Especially seing up until then they had been making a much better effort to include us collectors and products had been much improved. Oh well hopefully they learnt their lesson, allthough its a shame as it has shot the ebay prices right up as sellers reckon if select are selling at $50 then we can sell at $70+ now lol best bet is to wait until hype dies down.
