i've had mine for over a year now...i always use mine when the bid ends at like 3am....its the only way especially if you really want something....its not always a given that you will win because i've lost a quite a few but they are a must if you're bidding on stuff that ends on 4.30am sunday or monday morning...people have their "moral and ethical" opinions of sniping software but they obviously dont look at them as a "proxy" bidder Click here to enlarge

Gotta agree with u mate....not using them on key items is foolish. Apart from international auctions ending at horrific times, it's also great if you're busy and could possibly forget. Plus, if you have dial up or there is a black out (has happened quite a few times to me, more from slow internet) if you don't have a snipe set you just lost that 1/1 that completed your masterset.

Why would you bid early and risk the chance of getting in a bidding war? Then you can forget about paying "fair" value, you may end up paying waaaaaaay over. I really think it's more to do with common sense, than ethics. You put your highest amount in and if it has a high demand then you will pay max or miss out. How is that unethical?

I use justsnipe.....you get 5 free snipes per week. You can pay $5 a month and get more though. i have used it flawlessly for years now and my PC is thanking me!! As for going solo and bidding for it yourself......my PC is still crying over missed auctions because my computer froze. It's a no brainer IMO

Highest bidder still wins so they change little. I've used auction sniper for years and years and rarely bid without it. Life comes before sitting at the pc bidding on items.

I used justsnipe in the past, but seeing that I track a lot of card values, I don't need to snipe because I have a decent gauge on whether or not I'm overpaying for a card. So I can just place a bid with an hour or more left to go to see what the other person has got his bid to, and if it's at market value or more, I don't bid anymore. But yeah, justsnipe's reliable...BUT always place a small tester bid early on, with a few days, to see if you're allowed to bid according to the settings. Sometimes, sellers don't tick the "international shipping" auction even though they allow it in the description so YOUR SNIPE WILL NOT EXECUTE IF THIS IS THE CASE. I learnt that the hard way, missed out on a Kobe /5 Auto that I really needed because of this and my potential bid was $30 higher than the last bid, maybe I would have lost, who knows? All I know is that I sure wish I had a chance.

Any computer/software geeks in the forum BTW? I have de-registered from using the snipe programs, but I'm curious if anyone knows how secure/safe your information is using it?

Sniping would be unethical if it involved finding where your rival bidders lived and "taking them out" before the critical auction ends. An auction snipe, as many have stated, is just a proxy bid. If the ethical argument is that sellers don't get their fair sale price, I'd argue that without snipes they would get an even lower price...as the number of people who would forget or would just miss the end time before bidding would be an issue. As always, the auction will be won by the person willing to pay the most for it...be it by bidding 1 minute after the start of the auction, or in a last second snipe.

It is almost irrelevant how many seconds before the end you snipe...in fact you are probably better off having it at about 5 or 6 seconds rather than 3. This is because anyone who has the same snipe value (within the minimum bid increments) that has a later snipe than you will not get their bid on, and it is very hard to "retaliate" or put in a new bid value with only 6 seconds left in an auction.

I use auction sniper, but it has been giving me the ****s lately, not importing watches properly, and with 5 free a week I may give justsnipe a go!

Ah, I have thought about this as well, given that we have to give our username/password out for snipe site to work. I would be a bit wary if a site goes down (they are unlikely to do the wrong thing while they are raking in cash) or if you stop using a site for a long time, it would probably be a good idea to change your ebay password.

I would assume that the companies that run these auction snipers would have quite secure servers, as they would not want to deal with a class action suit against them if they were hacked and lost user information.

Definitely something I've been worried about. After all, there's no such thing as a free lunch right? Having their servers secure is one thing, but having the programmers/website administrators themselves being able to access Paypal, address, bank and credit card details is a bit worrying so I'm changing all my account passwords.
